Sure, apple acts out of corporate self interest, but, believe you can choose to use or not use AI features.
For recording, I don’t seem AI so much for audio recording.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I'm just guessing that what they want is as many people as possible getting machines that can support advanced AI as fast as possible so the developers can develop for it. So far the type of AI that we see in music is very gimmicky and pretty much worthless. But the stuff that you see in business would be very useful if it started appearing in DAWs and other places. There are 1 million possibilities but imagine basic things like being able to click a button and having an AI organize and clean a recording session for you. Or basically anything that you would normally have to have an assistant for. How long does mixing prep take? Basically any low skill activity should be assignable to an AI at some point.

Imagine a tool that can suggest best takes based on pitch and timing for example. All of these things which you really want human being to do but which human beings, us, can use help with because it takes so many hours to listen to everything. Or imagine searching through an audio file for a word or phrase instantly. "hey Siri, find me any open high hat hits."

I wonder if the high trade-in value is really an attempt to bring all the old intel-mac people into the Apple Silicon fold. They resell the refurbished trade-in minis for $350/400 to the intel people who will get to "feel the power of the dark side" -- I mean experience the power of the M-series machines. Then stop the costly support for the Intel Macs sooner rather than later.

I would like to know what sort of real world studio work increase in actual performance I would get……..over my M1 with 8GB 512HD…..using the base model M4 mini. There is also the question of compatibility with sonoma…… I really think you would benefit mostly from the memory upgrade. And of course the extra horsepower…but, yeah I think you’d get the ability to just keep buffers at 128 or 64 and forget about it.

I’m just wondering if the lack of connectivity is gonna be a pain? Just off the top of my head, it has about half the thunderbolt ports of the Mac Studio? Might have to buy a bigger thunderbolt hub, so that would add into the equation. Plus I’d be going from 32gb to 24gb in ram. Guess I could just buy it, see how it goes and if it doesn’t make sense take it back. Or love it and then trade the studio in.

Three TB ports and two USB-C on this year's model. Better than the old Mini but still short of the Studio. At least it has an ethernet port so Dante/AVB/etc users don't need to eat a TB port with an adapter.

This below quote kinda settled me down...
"I have both M1 Max Mac Studio and an M4 Mac Mini. The M1 Max Mac Studio shows 12.5K CPU score and 98K Metal score in Geekbench 6, while the M4 Mac Mini shows 15K and 57K, respectively. Even though the M1 Max shows a lower CPU score, many apps run faster on it because the RAM data transfer speed is 410 GB/s - 3 times that of the M4 (135 GB/s), and the M1 Max' GPU is almost twice as fast as the M4's"

John all that stuff you just posted confuses me. So the M1 MAx is better spec'ed then the current M4? I think I will be just updating my Imac after 10x years with the new Imac M4 models. Without doing a deep dive I think it seems the specs are suitable, unless there is something I am missing?
Also any personal experiences on a recommendation on a Thunderbolt hub that gives you more connections anyone can suggest?

Without doing a deep dive I think it seems the specs are suitable, unless there is something I am missing? As with most things, it depends! Which is why from my perspective there's marginal utility in upgrading now if you already have an adequately-spec'd Apple Silicon machine that is meeting your needs. If you have an Intel machine, there's never been a better time to upgrade. But it remains the best practice to buy as much RAM and storage as you can afford.

Apple just told me my loaded 2017 Intel iMac isn’t even worth a gift card, so it’s not such a good time to upgrade for me. I guess I’ll run this machine until I get locked out on compatibility. Really, it only sweats at high sample rates or huge mixes.

If Apple was about adoption of their own chips at the very least they would be giving out $50 gift cards for Intel machines & send them to the third world building an eventual new market. I just keep thinking there is something about those 1st generation machines that doesn’t work with their long term plans.

New m4 mini showed up, downloads and installs over wifi much quicker then my m1 on Ethernet:)’
It certainly seems faster, opening sessions etc..
Other obvious thing is the increased clarity of visuals: haven’t changed monitors, but much clearer, crisper and more colour range.
Unfortunately, no lynx sequoia drivers yet.
My ua connect loaded fine, oddly on my older mbp running sequoia I had problems.

I understand what you wrote, but how would that be the case?
You think apple will soon release an OS that won’t run on the m1 silicon?

I guess those WiFi protocols really do have an impact.

I agree with everything else you’ve said here too. Love this little machine. I upgraded over an M1 Mac Mini which was fine, but this bad boy is clearly much snappier (and looks much cooler too on my desk). Btw I got the M4 Pro version.

Seriously bro's, JK has the right idea, unless you are editing 8k vid there is no reason for a jump from M1 Here's 244 instances of Pro Q3 in max linear phase mode along with many other massive cpu intensive hogs in linear phase and max oversampling modes, the thing doesn't even sputter until instance 245. Save your $ unless you like giving it to apple 🤷🏻♂️

I'm pretty sure the M4 Pro would be a very big upgrade even in practical/realistic usage.

Well, it depends, nothing wrong with an m1, but the m4 outperforms it: the longer you keep an m1, the more it’s value will fall.
or just sell it now. I’m out of pocket about $8-900 cdn for a completely upgraded machine: faster processing , more storage and memory.
That snappier performance will be appreciated.
