It's the way the Cubase hybrid engine works.
You can build up massive arrangements using my 24 core Intel 13th gen CPU as it just passes the load down the line (width) It scales the load perfectly across the cores.
But at any moment playing a VI live with the record button engaged and the buffer set nice and low for low latency - the limit is still down to single core performance as Cubase always uses 1 core for a live armed track (height)
I'm not sure if other DAW's work this way, but Cubase sure does.
Single core performance has generally not increased that much relatively speaking - roughly only just over doubling in the last 10 years were as multicore performance is now massive with these 24+ core CPU's.
Last time I looked Cubase wasn't much different per say on Apple M chips for single core performance.
I imagine Logic X fairs far better for obvious reasons - probably Cubase would benefit from an audio engine re-write.

So the Macbook Pro's were just announced. The Max looks nice but, alas, not for me. I'm neck deep in AVB world and can't do without Ethernet port.
This is the last announcement, right?

Honestly on my M1 Pro MBP it feels like it's still bottlenecks in software holding things back, the computer is always yawning and about to nod off it's doing so little. I've never had anything related to tracking or mixing hit over 20% CPU. I can mix on my 10 year old dual core i7 windows laptop easily. I just use single sample rates and the old Sonnox Oxford plugs, which are fine, and occasionally TDR and u-He plugins, which are more advanced than UAD2 circuit models and the current flavor of the month naively oversampled almost to the mhz and still even more broken stuff despite being more optimized. Two-bus will be the Oxford Limiter for a harder sound or Satin for a softer one.
On the current i9-12900k, I can barely hit 50% of cpu use at 88.2 kHz and can only max out the performance cores by running tons of newer amp sims like Mercurial, Goodhertz Tupe, or the Softube Lemmy and Kerry King or by using tons of unnecessary fx sends to high powered FX. The main difference with the older computer is I can run plugins that do not do well on integrated graphics like the Softube Weiss, Goodhertz, and TDR filter pack plugins.
People just want to use naively oversampled, still broken circuit models running at 4 to 16 x 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rates as magic bullets in the hope of catching a vibe that's just not there in the functional hardware when used as a tool (the real magic bullets were shot by a sharpshooter from a sh1t gun), rejecting purpose made digital tools that work, instead of putting Decapitator or the real Silver Bullet plug on an track or mix to make it stand out if the artist wants it.

I started a new thread for this, but it doesn’t really matter ! Probably tidier to keep it all in this thread? I mean I did say “maybe MacBook pros tomorrow” in the first post 😉 I just updated the thread title to make it all encompassing with all M4s announced this week 👍🏻

Anybody worried about the fan in the Mac Mini? I'm not worried but should I be?
In the room I'd be putting in this I do mostly mixing but I also do the occasional vocal overdub. Seems like it'd have to be pretty loud to be louder than all the other random electricity and ductwork and God only knows what filtering in there.

I would imagine it’s probably the same level of dead silent as the previous M Minis? I keep my m1 mini on my desk and it’s silent.

Interesting place to put the power button It would have been very Apple to delete the power button altogether and then make you use their phones and watches as a remote. Let’s hope they aren’t lurking 😁

Looking these over I have to admit I’m a little more impressed than I thought I would be. The price for the base with 16gb is just to much of steal. When these were just part of the rumor mill I was afraid like my Apple TV they were going to end up using the crappy onboard PSU. Honestly it’s funny I have looked at the outboard PSU for the Mytek, but really the Apple TV could use a better PSU, both live on a Furman Voltage regulator. Maybe we will see highend outboard MaC Mini PSU’s I think I have an early USB hub bigger than this thing!

I just checked and there's a $300 cash-back on my 2021 M1 Mini.
This is a no-brainer! $300 to upgrade to the M4 (currently $600 for the same RAM, etc specs) ??
I'm, actually, going to upgrade to the M4 with 32 gigs of RAM. It's still dirty cheap for that amount of power and should last me, at least, 4 years.

I'm awaiting mine, haven't got an estimate delivery date from B&H but I ordered the 14 core / 20 core so I'm guessing I'll have a bit more of a wait

I’m so close to buying a new M4 Max 36GB 1TB Mac Book Pro.
It would make a lovely laptop for my writing/ teaching room and then sitting in my living room playing around with band and YouTube videos.
Small matter of £3500!!!
But, I really think it will last me for a very long time.

16 inch ?
over here, the financing is around 7%, on a monthly basis doesn’t add much to cost, but you get immediate utility !

Supposedly my M1 Mac studio would get $870 trade-in, but the M4 I want is $1399. Was thinking I might wait… but the Mac mini probably won’t get another refresh for quite a while

I keep thinking I could upgrade my M1 mini but what for? It does everything I need it to right now, and silently! Would be a lot of money for marginal utility that quickly depreciates. That being said, these are a great value. The refurbished M7 I buy in 5 years is gonna be insane.

I would like to know what sort of real world studio work increase in actual performance I would get……..over my M1 with 8GB 512HD…..using the base model M4 mini.
There is also the question of compatibility with sonoma……

Or the m4 has about a 25-30% performance increase, and by trading in or selling your m1, you will never get more for it. I just sold my roughly 3 year old m1 for $450 cdn, got a new m4, doubled my ssd and increased ram by 30%, for about a grand or $55 monthly. I agree you don’t have to, but now has its advantages.
