Does anyone know if the Apollo Black Lion Mods on a Blackface 16 MKII will be as good as the X series? Does anyone notice from going thru the AES port on their Apollo X to their D/A sounding different than without it? In other words taking the Apollo out of the chain. I noticed my D/A is compromised in sound even going through the AES port on the Apollo. It’s very noticeable, stereo width/punch/clarity/fullness/closeness to the sound. It’s at least a 30% difference maybe more. The blackface Apollo 16 mk2 is actually the one and only Apollo we do not mod The 16 had top of the line converters compared to the bf 8, but the X were subsequent gen, I think ?

Yes, this is the reason I changed directions from the Apollo. Although Console is easy to use, it’s still not ideal for me with my outboard. I'm not sure I follow what that has to do with word clock cables though? Were you intending to respond to somebody else? Yes, I’m using the correct cables for word clock

Or you just don’t bother with the older models? Is it that much different than all the others?

All y'all are making me feel self-conscious about my lowly SF Apollo Quad and 16. I just can't convince myself to spend another $5k on interfaces with how much I actually record so they will have to do. :x

It soundly whooped my super modded Black Lion 002 and I made recordings I love with it.

That little gear-demon in you always wants "the best" when you should just worry about writing some music or something. If new Apollos come out, I might try to nab some newly old x series ones to upgrade my little buddies.

No criticism of owners intended, it’s just a fact that UA improved each gen of apollo:sf,bf and X. Doing the mod makes them more linear, quieter, better s/n. it’s really a question of how to spend money and on what. If you want to tweak the apollo sound , the mod is one option or buy the new one or don’t bother and just enjoy using your current apollo: different strokes, etc.!

Tracked a girl today with the Hilo. Holy crap. That AD is phenomenal. That’s the easiest vocal I’ve ever gotten. Never pinched, never got harsh. Just awesome. With the Apollo AD, it could get strident imo, and the Burl is…well, colored. Hit it hard and it would saturate like it’s supposed to…and while it’s excellent, and better than the Apollo, I still was not super happy with vocals at times. It was Soyuz 017 Tube > Stam 1073 > AudioScape 1178 > Hilo. Dude if you’re up to it, I would love to hear your voice through the Hilo vs. something you did with the Burl. I have a bunch of raw vocals I did with a Hilo. That thing was absolutely crystal clear. Zero dirt, distortion, or other junk. And the tone was phenomenal. My Lavry comes close — tone is equally awesome, but I do get occasional artifacts (I can live with that, though). Also that chain is seriously enviable. Gimme that 1178!
