Yeah, I never would have checked out the TDR stuff, were it not for Dan. I generally could always find some value in what he had to say about plugins, specifically. Other topics? Eh, it was a mixed bag.
This thread has been a weird one...
Shit talking about UA's marketing, interspersed with Dan's arguments with various posters about plugins versus hardware, and now this last page is reading like an obituary or something.
Strange...

Dan - please feel free to come back. We all hope you are ok. TDR wants you back here too! Well, since he deleted his profile, he now can’t unless he joins as a different name.

Simply put, UAD has always had a pretty deaf ear when it comes to client relations. So this is nothing new. Kcat and I were writing them almost a decade ago about something they were doing that was distasteful.
Hundreds, maybe thousands of customers have asked UAD to implement some kind of plug-in list making it easier to find the plug-ins you have for ten years now. They still leave you to scroll through all their plugs to find what you're looking for. Yes, there are workarounds, but my point is, even something as simple as this was blown off by UAD for some convoluted corporate reasoning. So it doesn't surprise me when they refuse t find a middle ground to keep long term customers happy.
In many businesses, word of mouth is extremely important. I believe that one positive remark can reach 250 people on average. UAD's "customer service" taking two weeks to respond to an important technical problem is one more example of a good way to undermine the reputation that took decades to build.
This reminds me of the issues Gibson had when expanding too rapidly. There CEO eventually sold his share and left.

Yes, they have always been this way, to one extent or another. I think the difference these days is that they've just gotten much worse about it in the last few years. What used to be annoying, but was otherwise more or less tolerable because the overall experience was still pretty good, has now turned into something much more intolerable. It's moved beyond annoying to the point that it's going to legitimately start driving away established, long term customers if this all keeps up.

@johnkenn When I sold my UA stuff didn’t miss it at all, loved my Aurora n, wish it didn’t have sd card stuff and came with 4 pre module, that included 4 converters to so 12 channels, no problem finding plugs for my master, fab filter, Softtube. I only bought UA Signature cus it was cheap and native, after last exchange with Drew, wish I hadn’t bought back in and just got good ob compressors. Think you’ll have trouble getting $20 per UA plug but you never know! I hope Dan’s ok, he seemed to go pretty dark quickly the last few months. I mean really, who criticizes gear, so vehemently, when they haven’t demoed or used it ? Do you still have your Lynx Aurora n? Yup, my fav so far. After all Apollos and symphony mkii.

[...] I know it isn’t a fun thing to say but if a product isn’t making you money… you don’t need it. Ahhh, but what about the product that potentially might possibly someday make you money if the stars are aligned just right? How about 'this product makes me money/saves me time 1-3 times a year?'

That was my only issue with it all. The idea I'm an idiot using hardware and I'm in need enlightenment. Dan, had very polarized views on monitors too (for example) and we completely agreed on that subject and we shared a near visceral hate of Sennheiser (well I don't like them as a company put it that way) But that's the problem with black and white thinking - life is shades of grey. I hope he only left in a fit of pique and will return so I can continue with him to knock Sennheiser at every opportunity :-) Dan's not the only one with polarizing views I guess (as in me) but I just think it keeps things interesting and it's a bit of fun really. Holistically audio or music is a perplexing topic further derived by the fact this is a completely subjective and creative medium. I guess that sometimes I come across like I'm arguing, however that's never my intent. Through some healthy debate I'm hoping that a juxtaposed perspective will spark some sort of epithany and it does more often than one would think.
What I never do is take this too seriously (because it can be a slippery slope), we all have our instilled perspective from the music we enjoy. The approach required for that varies to the point we're sometimes at an impasse before we begin. Doesn't mean that I don't respect or encourage that alternate approach, especially when someone becomes successful because of it (good on them).

For me I appreciated Dan's approach to the forum which I would call highly... umm, neurodiverse? And the Tokyo Dawn stuff is really great definitely thanks for that.
However, it often seemed to me like he was doing the opposite of buyer's justification. It was like "non-buyer's justification."
It often felt like he was dogging on stuff he didn't want to pay for or couldn't pay for just to justify his lack of access to the tools (for whatever reason). I picked up on this a while ago when I realized... wait a minute, you're taking this ultra cork sniffing point of view when you yourself are rocking some pro-sumer KRK monitors and a compact MOTU interface?
There's nothing wrong with any of that stuff and there's nothing wrong with not having budget for stuff. We've all been there. But it's not cool to make people feel like everything they own and everything they've ever purchased and everything they're thinking of purchasing is a total waste of money.
Oh yeah, unless you can spend $30k on [whatever tool], then MAYBE... but otherwise you're better off with [insert very cheap thing].
I picked up on this pattern a long time ago and never wanted to call it out cuz I kind of felt bad for him. And also because he was/is really knowledable about the schematics of various plugins which actually was useful. The other thing is, if Dan liked something that was ever remotely main stream, it was kind of like a stamp of approval. "Wait, he doesn't think this sucks??? It must be amazing."
I kind of appreciated that.
Anyway, I think he left cuz he got called out on not having used the stuff he was talking about. For me I don't care but I can see how that would be a bit exposing. I hope he comes back and sticks to nerding out on plugins and steers clear of trashing everyone's gear decisions.
My two cents.

Constructive criticism is fine, let's avoid a pile on though please. I talked to Dan over Skype a lot, IMO he is genuinely an interesting and cool person even if we didn't agree on everything but that's the core of learning. I'd like him to further contribute in time, so let's be supportive yeah?

Ok. Not Dan related. But this thread made me go back and look at all the current UA plugs. And even if they were all ported to native theres only a handful, and a very small handful at that, that I would be even remotely interested in.
Cheers, Geoff

I don't believe for a second this was avoided by UA for any convoluted reason. I believe it is there 100% on purpose. If you accidentally forget that you don't own that plugin and try it (well, maybe you end up liking it), or worse, you use it, and then come back to your session and it's expired and now you are forced to buy it? It's purely a sales/marketing move. It's free advertising right inside your DAW.

I never thought of Dan as trying to insult people here. He called out a lot of objective flaws in products. Corrected untruths. Gave us in-depth analysis rooted in provable facts that no one else did. Sometimes I was puzzled at his tastes like when he told me modern Iron Maiden albums sounded better than the classics or that the O2 headphone amp was terrible(he never did answer my question as to why he felt that way as far as I can recall). But I just chalked it up to him being a bit eccentric. I've always wanted to hear his work. Perhaps it wouldn't suit my taste at all. After all, I've never embraced the way the TDR stuff sounded. Never got into Fuse either. Don't get me wrong. They're both very good companies, but I just never fell in love with them. With what he said about the Softube stuff recently and some of their design choices it made sense as to why I didn't like the sound of their non-FX plugins when used certain ways. His info about Satin and the SP2016 got me using them again when I had put them aside for a long time.
This recent stuff here, I was kinda waiting for him to give us the big narrative as it seemed he was connecting some dots. One point he seemed to be making was that modern hardware sounds more transparent and perhaps isn't worth having because of that. I'm not sure. The high-end stuff I've heard and/or worked with sounded classy. It could be clear, but also full and have some vibe to it. Still a big difference between plugin emulations and hardware versions of a Shadow Hills, VSM, or a Stamchild. Didn't he not care that much for the Weiss stuff a while back? I seem to remember him commenting about it over the years but now he's acquired it and thinks it's top notch. He always kinda digging, seeking out some kinda broader answers. It was always interesting to see where he went. Admittedly, I would kinda tune out some of the most eccentric stuff he said and just focus on things he wrote that were clear cut evidence of an objective problem. That's what I like to do, try and take real data and facts and then sorta follow my own path with it. At the end of the day, that's all we can really do. We don't need to try and be like anyone or strive to emulate certain subjective standards and styles. Adhering to objective principles like dithering is completely different though. Dan was big on that kinda stuff.
The thing that probably rubs people the wrong way about him is the absolutist way he talks at times. "this thing suck", "this thing is terrible", he doesn't use a lot of tact at times. When he'd say that about something I used, I'd often wonder what he found that would lead him to that conclusion. He left GS a while ago, I think. Hopefully he comes back here as I don't know that he'd pop up on KVR or VI-Control. Probably not on Audio Science Review either. I'm sure his writeups on here took hours to do at times, he certainly put the effort in. Too bad he deleted his profile, he probably had more lurker fans than he knew and some of us will want to go back and read things he posted. My guess is that he wants to avoid the temptation to come back and spend hours a week on here. I don't think he hates everyone here enough to screw us out of reading his work. Too bad he doesn't have a website or anything, at least not one that I know of. There was a lot of useful knowledge that deserves to be preserved.

Shame to see him go.... I liked him, and when we zoom called that time he was a cool dude. He is very intelligent...and obviously under some sort of stress/pressure....I wish him all the best. plug ins vs hardware is like arguing about chocolate or vanilla (although everyone knows chocolate is better..... 8) ..... ) each to their own. There are times I have sung the virtues of both... owned plenty high end of both....and made music with both. Also everyones needs are different.. .solo acoustic guitar guy.. vs.... drum kit and full band guy....for example.... Again Dan, if you are reading this... good luck mate and always here if you want to talk.. you can get hold of me at my website www.peterknightmusician.comcheers Wiz

Much love and respect to the OG Dan. I've only been here for a year and some change, but long enough to appreciate his war veteran-like mentality, he has clearly seen some horrors in his time. At the end of the day, an extremely knowledgable guy, especially in terms of technical stuff. I know I learned a lot from Dan, even if I didn't agree sometimes.
Dan, if you're reading this, I hope you can find a way to get back that spark of love for trying new things, which you say you've lost. I know you didn't ask for my advice, I'll give it anyway: remember why you originally loved music. Music is in the heart, not the head, in my opinion, and once you get the disease "mixer brain" that we all get, along with a few very difficult clients, it can really ruin that magic. But, not forever!!
Everyone does shadow work, whether they realize it or not - releasing of negative energy, purging, or whatever you want to call it, and there are absolutely healthy ways to do it. Everyone has to do it, otherwise the negativity stews inside you or just fizzles out slowly. But once that work has been done in a healthy way, you'll find that life is even more beautiful than you thought before. It's worth living! And the things that were the most difficult to get through before, were actually the catalysts for your own growth. To lead you back to what matters.
Hope you are doing all right Dan the man, wishing you the best!
