I've got one of these MK-U47 mics on the way. I am not the most tech-savy. CAT5 is helping me out. Mine will have the Neumann K49 capsule. Cat 5 will build you a mic that will knock your socks off and last you a lifetime. He's the good stuff. Cool. The clips that you (and the others) posted here on this site helped me to decide on this mic. Thank you for sharing them, cowboycoalminer.

The K49 cap sounds pretty awesome in this mic. A little bit more modern than the Thiersch (which is still my preference) but as silky smooth as you'd hope.
I agree about the plastic rings. How much are they saving by not making them out of brass? Then again, maybe there's a reason (like some advantage) that we haven't thought about. The capsule sure does sound great though.
Wagz, you are getting one heck of a mic!

Just bought myself the MK-U47 kit. Not sure why (how many high-end mics do I need, let alone U47 clones???), but couldn't resist. Need to save up for the PSU and capsule. You'll probably see my build in 2018.

I just got my new CAT5 MKU47 today and it is phenomenal! It is very nice. Regarding the sound, it sounds very smooth and natural. It doesn't sounds veiled or "pushed back". It has the perfect amount of treble in the right places, IMO. The Neumann K49 cap was an excellent choice. To me, it feels like this mic almost has a type of built in compression in it or something. It's definitely a "color mic". Color me impressed. Great job, Cat5! This mic is built so well... This P.S.U really caught my eye. It also seems very well-made and stout. BTW, that logo is cool. I am still learning this mic, but so far, it is quiet and also seems less prone to popping than some other mics that I have used. I don't know why that is. I have noticed that it is less sibilant than a certain brand of U47 clone that I used (the name starts with a W). This mic is very pleasing in that area. Sibilant sounds seem to be much softer and more pleasing with this mic. Thanks again, Cat5! You are very skilled and it shows through with this mic. I really appreciate you working with me.

I've been singing on mine a lot lately. I'm not sure a 47 is the perfect mic for my voice - Lots of midrange forwardness...but man - it's good sounding midrange. Not harsh at all...I'm just digging a lot of the middle out on vocals. The top is fantastic on this mic. The least sibilant mic I've ever used. The modded CV4 is probably a better match to my voice right out of the box, but the top is nowhere near as good on it compared to the MK-U47...

I'm always, in the back of my mind, thinking about having Cat 5 build me one of these beauties. The clips I've heard are so good.

Awesome Wagz! I knew the mic would hit the spot, but glad to hear that confirmed. I too liked the K49 capsule in the mic. It has a slightly more modern sound, and maybe a little more up top than the Thiersch M7s. I can't say I have a favorite capsule in the MK-U47 because all that I have tried sound amazing, but the K49 was definitely a pleasant surprise. Any questions or concerns feel free to call me. I'm always happy to help. Johnken, Wagz got the RCAs with the build but I want to caution everyone that while they sound amazing in these mics the other tubes offer other variations of awesomeness. I haven't really found tubes that sound bad in these mics, aside from the Western Electric noise issues, but even those are among my favorite sounding tubes (if you get quiet ones) because of the smoothness and saturation they offer. As far as your mic having too forward of a midrange for you John, you'd probably get closer to what you want with the Red capsule. There is such love for the Blueline (because of its awesomeness) that the Red gets overlooked and it's just as amazing of a capsule. It doesn't do the pressing midrange thing that the Blueline does, but admittedly that is what most people are after. NO capsule I've tried (with the exception of a K67 I use for testing) has any degree of sibilance in these mics. It's like they have built in De-essers. ragan, it'd be an honor to build a mic for you man. An MK-U47 would be dangerous in your hands. Your last album was already killer. I can just imagine....

Don't forget the first dibs deal we made, let me know the second you don't want the little bad boy anymore? I'll put the cash in your paypal account, and bring him back to his birthplace 8)

Almost all male vocals I've ever recorded have needed a small slice out around 1.5k-2.5k to get rid of some resonance. Sweep around there and find it. It kills some of the strange forwardness you hear but without really changing the midrange much.

Don't think I'd sell. I would try a new capsule first. What I want to do is hire Shannon to make this a convertible, hot-swap head. That way I can have the blueline and a custome one Shannon builds.

Think I'm gonna have Shannon talk a swing at a K47 cap for mine. I can always put the blue line back in if I want. Who knows, maybe I'll like Shannon's cap so much I can sell the Blueline. Or I can move forward with a convertible design of Shannon's making. Wonder if Max would sell just a head basket?

I have a couple ideas up my sleeve for exactly what ur thinking on a head swap, will be mount and capsule based though(no need for a second basket), of course Shan is the man for capsule anything.
