Props to our thread pal Cat5!
I had sent him my mike and psu to check over and to install my new blue cap.. His build and diagnostic skills surpass mine.
He has the mike rockin now with WE tubes and says its sounding great !
I starting building last July and have yet to use it: can't wait.
If you are interested in the mike and need a builder: hit cat5 up !

Can anyone talk me out of selling one of my U47 clones? What application would be best suited for utilizing two U47's at the same time? I just don't find myself using both much at all.

Thanks ben.
So, the basic differences between Max's MK47 and yours are Max's transformer, and the Thiersch M7? I don't know which kind of caps Max uses and my knowledge is limited here, so I would have to A-B the differences separately to really know how much of a difference each part makes, and that's highly impractical.
That's why these shootouts are so much fun and really helpful to me.

That's why these shootouts are so much fun and really helpful to me. yeah, basically. i don't know if Max recommends a particular capsule, but his kits do not include one. The mics sound fantastic either way, and all of the component options that we all throw around here are quality. It really comes down to a matter of preference. I just don't know if I can justify keeping both when I really only find myself using one. For LDCs, I have pairs of AKG c14 BULS's, the Beesneez C-12's and the MK67's. So, if I need to record with a stereo pair, I have several options already. The u47 is more limited with only two pickup patterns. Just got my Thiersch M7 Blueline (finally!), so I'll be trying that out this week. I'll try to post some clips if i get a chance.

If there is anything that makes bigger differences, then it's capsule and, in this case, the output transformer maybe. Putting a Thiersch and Max Kirch's Bv.08 into the mic will bring it to the maximum. Not saying the components used in ben's mic do not sound good - not at all. It is just that it can be easily brought up to the point where it is the real thing in making it a faithful recreation as far as it can get. I would rate the impact of components, if components used are generally high quality, like this, from more to less impact: capsule, transformer, tube. YMMV.

That's why I have a pair. plus tracking acoustic in pairs or a vocal and something else at the same time.

If there is anything that makes bigger differences, then it's capsule and, in this case, the output transformer maybe. Putting a Thiersch and Max Kirch's Bv.08 into the mic will bring it to the maximum. ...hmmm, maybe, maybe not...what you are addressing really comes down to personal preference...particularly where capsules are concerned...there are many reputable mic aficionados that prefer a historically-correct K47-type capsule in the 47 over an M7, and some who prefer an original Neumann M7 over Thiersch's...it's splitting hairs once you get to this level of quality components...somewhat similar to those who insist if it doesn't have a VF14 in it, it cannot be a "47"...Oliver Archut (RIP) believed the EF800 was the best choice for tube (and he was more than familiar with the implementation of dual-pentode tubes in parallel as Max prefers)... ...Brian Fox has his recipe (6922 tube), Jim Jacobsen (JJ Audio) his own as well...so, my point, it's really what you're looking for or prefer to hear in your 47 recreation...Max has chosen this configuration for his premium build, and it's wonderful, but there is more than one way to skin a cat...just sayin'...

I've been curious about the Thiersch M7 myself. There's a certain ever so slight brittle quality in the highs somewhere, but I think it might be simply due to age that the original capsule sounds a little different.

great which configuration and cap ? stock max build with Thiersch blue ? Thiersch blue line, TAB bv8, Russian oil/paper cap, Russian polystyrene caps, WE 408 tubes. It just sounds right on all the voices so far.

I swear I can almost recognize the sound of the M7. That mic sounds a lot like mine, but is just a little smoother all around, very very nice. It's plenty bright too, no worries about that. I've demoed one of the Manley mics, and it had so much push in the low end, and sounded so "old time radio" , it seemed unusable for anything but that sound.
These mics might still be breaking in, and if anything, will only get better.
