Good components must be a good start. A sexy body must be a good finish. I got a pro forma from Josh at FJ, just need a royalty check in a few weeks to blow on mics…..

I’ll speak to FJ next week. The new logo would be preferable. Can you let me know about spare tubes. Are both Mics easy to obtain tubes easily? Best Paul

Cheers Guys. I’m very hands on tube changing so that’s good to know. As long as they’re not sub mini’s soldered into the board.

I usually but the lanolin that I use at mitre 10 (of all places) it is a food grade lanolin grease and smells great too. It is fantastic for threads as it doesn't blacken. cheers

The BC12a tube is soldered to the PCB but only takes about 5 minutes to change. The interesting thing is; in two decades of using this tube, I have never needed to replace one. they are the most musical and straight out of the box quiet tube that I have ever used or known of.

That’s interesting. I have a Brauner VM1 5840 that’s gone noisy that is incredibly complicated on first look.I wish they had stuck to EF68 tubes. Is your Brimar a standard EF68 mics?

The 5840 can be a real disaster. For starters, it has a round base and pinout which makes it great for a socket but terrible for soldering. I tried the 5840 in out bu47 for a minute but you're right, they go noisy and going forward, I would never use one again in a mic. The 5784 is different, it has a straight or inline base making it very easy to solder and remove. All in all, it is simply just a finer pedigree. It is a beautiful tube. As for the Brimar, internally it has an identical layout to the EF86 however, pinout is different. Brimar did this so they could move the heater pin further away from the grid and thus creating a lower noise tube. The brimar is also an amazing tube that I spent so many hours looking for, testing and evaluating. It will sonically be as smooth and musical as any high end EF86 but will have the added advantage of a lower self noise. A win win all round.
