A small percentage didn't. All part of their Evil Plan. (Best Vincent Price laughing voice)... "Ba Ha Ha Ha Ha" Chris P.S. Wait a minute! I just saw a new Slate Plug that does that. And the Price is right.

I’m not at all surprised they had to back down on this. I still don’t understand what they were thinking, it’s like they did zero market research. It had to be hubris. Unfortunately for them, they probably lost many customers for life.
I had just come around to being okay with WUP after experiencing how long it’s taken other companies to get their stuff Apple Silicon native, and seeing some GUI enhancements they made to old classics.
I’m glad the audio community has once again soundly rejected the subscription only model.

We know this is what they actually want to do. I’m certainly not going to trust them and buy something new from them now.

They only backed down due to the magnitude and immediacy of the negative response: obviously well passed their planned (and accepted) collateral damage threshold.

Two of the more popular YouTube music guys weighing in. Capperrune (112K subscribers) says he's done with Waves, MixBusTv (131K subscribers) provides alternatives. I guess CLA and Greg Wells will need to start looking for other easy revenue streams.

Weirdly enough, I am back on Waves stuff all of a sudden at this spot where I am working this week and, yeah they get kinda icky if you push your luck but I can still get work down with them. Client is stoked, so that's good.
Their hardware emulation stuff is decidedly not special.

I may have heard from a little bird the real reason for the walk back is that the subscription was not working correctly. I find this hilarious. They made a major alteration that didn't work.

All this reminds of when I finally canceled my monthly Scrabble Club subscription.
Everything was going fine. Then...
Came all the threatening letters. Chris

If they keep their original WUP plan and stick to it, I hope that Waves stays in business. I checked for the first time in a while and, for example, if my aging version of RAxx stopped working and I wanted to continue using it, the WUP will cost me $12. That’s incredibly reasonable given that they need to pay to have staff continually update their massive library.

WUP in and of itself is wrong. They are greedy. If they eliminate WUP and allow customers free updates for paid plugins, I’d consider using my waves plugins again.

I get that it takes time and labor to constantly maintain and update these things...if I use RVox for 10 years without needing to pay for an updated version, and then it's only $12 to pay for my "share" of the cost that went into the latest iteration, I'm okay with that. I'd rather do that than pay $$$ for "Waves 15" and software I don't need.

I actually really like a lot of Waves plugins - some of the early stuff was very good and has it's own signature and I like a lot of the modern stuff too. Like those CLA compressors - they have a unique envelope especially the 76's emulations - very different to the UAD stuff.
What surprises me, is they are allowing a rolling subscription and this would actually suite me.
There's no way I would drop $2000 on Mercury so access to all 220 plugins does sound very appealing.
I write and record albums in cycles and so in an 18 month to two year cycle I might only be mixing a new album for 3 months. So for $75 I get access to the entire Waves collection and then I can cancel my sub and re active it the next time I find myself mixing.
If I go back to taking client work and I'm producing for a fee again (this will most likely be when I semi retie in a few years time) then $25 a month is ok with me, as my accountant can write most of it off and production/session work pays well and would make the cost easily justifiable.
If you don't yet have a big Waves collection - oddly despite the huge kickback - the sub is actually a very good deal for someone like me and surprisingly attractive the more think about it.
Of course if you already own Mercury it's not a good deal!

I’m seeing a lot of other developers take advantage of the Waves fumble. I’m getting an in-rush of flash sales emails, some with deep discounts. Also, the PA email header reads “Wave Goodbye to Our Mega Sale”. Nice one.
