Awesome Teejay, care to share your thoughts on the differences? I’m looking for the best deal at the moment on either so whichever pops up first. The goal is to own both as well. I’m still waiting on the clip btw 🙂 Just a friendly reminder that I provided my thoughts to you on the mics in our DM back in early November. Also shared clips at that time, so you may want to revisit that. I’m not going to be able to provide any additional clips right now as I’m set up and tracking a new project. Sorry TeeJay, forgot about these, I’m just revisiting, it’s been so much info and references lately. Cheers.

I like having at least a few "cheap" vocal mics around, especially for "Character" vocals. So after you make the big decision(s)... Maybe adding another that's "different", might be a thought. For example, just used an AKG 200 Perception, to record a nice (IMHO) practice vocal. If you didn't know better, you might think it was done on a relatively more upscale 414-ish mic! Not bad for less than a $100 total expense. And they're even less $$ nowadays. Chris P.S. The Beyer M88TG would also certainly merit consideration, on this kind of "affordable" short list. And is handy for live studio vocals too, including scratch vocals. That could end up keepers.

An update of my search, after much listening online, I went back to my L22 system and thoroughly went through the emulations using eq to even out previously recorded vocals. The C800 and 017T are my favorites. None of these high end mics sound bad and I’m able to find the sweet spot for these vocals with eq each having their own unique flavor. I also like the c12 but will have to go with a clone for this option. The u47 isn’t as versatile as the others imo but sounds great for most. Spending this much, I have a hard time going for a copy/clone like flea, wunder etc. I rather own a real Neuman, AKG, Soyuz, Chandler etc. as my first high end mic. I would definitely be collecting a few of these mics over time but I’m starting with either the Redd or the Soyuz; the Soyuz has the edge at the moment. The 017 tube has a unique round, 3D vybe and sizzle on the top which I love while the chandler is honest, clear and open. The chandler is closer to the finished sound I’m looking for but the Soyuz has the excitement and a vybe that you can’t get with eq. This journey has thought me a lot, no regrets. I’ll update once I purchase and record our first take. Cheers guys. I have a light tenor voice, which I can push and get a very bluesy tone (I’m told I sound a lot like Sting as a reference) and after a long search for mics I ended up with Wunder CM7 (high end U47 clone) it has a beautiful smooth top end and that iconic reedy mid push plus because of the superb build quality it reproduces my voice so incredibly naturally as to make it sound like I’m stood between the monitors singing directly to you through rose tinted glasses. Generally, for a tenor I find I very rarely prefer anything to a 47. When I’m crooning lower in my baritone register I prefer the etched tone of the BLUE Kiwi (which I personally prefer to the Neumann 87ai) If you’re on a budget, the FLEA 47 is a great bang to buck ratio. If you’re pushing out the boat, I can highly recommended the Wunder CM7s. Of course, in this price bracket it’s hard to go wrong and there’s many other great options, though some are imho more marmite choices like the Sony 800, Redd Mic and BLUE Bottle all of which are very modern big etched tones that either work superbly or sound plain wrong with some voices. You can play it safe with a great 49 which is hard to sound bad on ime. It would be ideal to have one of everything …. make that two of everything That's why you need to demo microphones yourself. I don't think I ever preferred a U47 to any high-end mic on my own voice. And I also would describe my voice as fairly smooth. Glad you found something you liked! I did enjoy the Wunder when I demoed it on my own channel.

I now have both the Chandler REDD and the Soyuz 017 tube. You can't go wrong with either as your flagship. 117 mics and I have neither of those . . . hmm.... well, coming up in the new year, both a cdkelly U48 and a Heiserman 251 Still need a red!

I would like to add that I like the Heiserman 47 over the flea by quite a margin and should be considered....

I would like to add that I like the Heiserman 47 over the flea by quite a margin and should be considered.... For a more vintage, smoother vocal sound, I prefer the H7 capsule. Of course, that is not the vocal sound that may be desired in a particular genre. I prefer the H47 capsule for overheads and some instruments.

Has anyone tried the Manley silver? What are your thoughts? Most recommend the gold but don’t hear of the silver much. I had a good listen to the sweetwater recording of the 3 Manley’s and I’m impressed with the gold and silver. Don’t think I’ll make a Manley my first high end mic, just curious here.

Those Manley mics are like fantastic camera lenses. When my wife recently bought a new fancy pants camera to take a few photos of me for promotion stuff I thought it was broken when she first tested it on me - I looked terrible. Then my two sons did a few photos and looked stunningly handsome Turns out it's a great camera that reveals the truth of the source in all it's honest glory. Those Manley mics remind me of that, if you have a really stunning beautiful voice I think they can sound stunningly great. If you need "rose tinted glasses" there's nowhere to hide :-)

thehightenorAgreed. I would assume the Gold is probably the most flattering of the bunch, but having owned a Ref C previously, your description is bang on. Beautiful mic when it fits the source, completely unforgiving when it doesn't. OP, the Silver is Manley's take on a C37a, which is a classic tube mic that was Sony's response to the popular Neumanns at the time, namely the U47. I haven't used a C37a personally, but from what I can tell, it's got a thick, vibey sound with very rich low mids and a slight HF lift. It's a really unique mic and doesn't really sound like a Neumann. Tonelux also make a high end clone — the JC 37. Amazing mics for sure, but I think you might be getting a little lost in the weeds. I've been there, so I know how overwhelming it can be. If you can't try/return the mic you choose, it's best to stick with safer options, IMO. Based on everything you've shared, I think a REDD, 017, U87, or even a U67 would probably be safe bets. Just my 2c.

It's on my "Love List" of vocal microphones. Josephson is among the very top capsule Masters. Actually, I think of it as pretty "Ribbon-ish" BTW. It sounds like it has the mellow C37 DNA in it. (The REDD is like a very clear pane of glass) Eventually when he has more time... Doug Sanborn, who has a stellar mic collection, and I plan to get together. His daughter is an amazing vocalist, and Doug can sure record! Honestly, I plan to stay in the $2K and under range for personally recorded vocals. But have mad respect, for these premium microphones too! Chris P.S Just saw T's post above. Yes the Tonelux JC37 is a great mic too. (Pre-Pandemic) Joe Chiccarelli at NAMM, was interested in having me do a Tonelux vocal Demo on it. Sinatra sang some of his Capitol stuff on the C37.

I've always wanted to demo a Tonelux JC37.
If a Wunder CM7 is a great fit for my voice, I'm thinking a TL JC37 might also be a very good mic for me (not that I really need a new mic :-)

For quite a while, they intended a FET version. Not sure as to the present status on that. Sounded interesting though. Chris

I own and use a Flea 47 with F7 cap and love it. Been my #1 for years. Previously owned a Manley Gold and didn’t care for it. Had it for a few months and traded it away. Had a client come in with their own Manley Silver and loved it. If one popped up used for a fair price and I had the funds available, I’d grab it in a heartbeat. Thought it was a wonderfully smooth mic.
