Might have been posted earlier? Josh's vocal subvid on the RS660. Again, that dude can sing his ass off. Dig it.
And apologies, Josh. Great tracking, man. Should have mentioned that at the start.

Awesome chain and great engineering just by being able to rerun tracks through different channels later. I've listened your videos with that band and he's got great mic control. Not sure a lot of singers still get that aspect of it.

Lead Vocal Demo! Full review coming ASAP. That dude would sound good with a hairbrush and tape recorder. But this thing does sound nice. Edit: not discounting your skillz, Josh lol.

Who is Joey Barnes? My God how can you have a voice like that and never break through? I think he was Chris Daughtry’s drummer at one time.

He was indeed the first Daughtry drummer for a couple of years. He played on the “Leave This Town” album and toured all over. I’m lucky to call him one of my best friends.

Unfortunately I sold it a while back, would love to pick one up again in the future though! Will probably spring for the Suprema this time around. Back when I got mine that wasn't a thing yet.

Damn. I just found out about this compressor after the recent article on TapeOp. I was saving to get a Rockruepel Comp. Two for mastering and occasional vox mixing and whatnot, but the RS660 looks really tempting. I would be getting two channels with the Comp. Two for the price of one, so not really sure what to do here. My normal thinking process would tell me to stay with the Comp. Two, but then again, the RS660 sounds really sweet. I don't do much tracking these days to be honest. Just once in a while. Most of the work is mixing and mastering folk and electronic music. Does anyone mind chipping in and helping me decide? This won't be an impulsive buy, so I still have time to think this over. I also had a Retro 176 in mind, but I wouldn't have much use for it outside of vocal tracking/mixing. Btw, thanks for that review seawell, really helpful as usual.

Thanks, I'm glad you found the review helpful! I've reviewed a bunch of Vari Mu comps on the channel(and have used a bunch more before doing the YouTube thing) and the RS660(in limiter mode) brought an excitement to the vocal that was unlike anything else I'd heard. It really was something special! If someone is just getting in to outboard and is buying their first vari mu comp, I usually recommend the 176 just because it is so versatile. It is the fastest of the bunch and can lock any vocal you throw at it into place. Having said that, tone wise I don't feel it gets into that special territory that I find with the RS124, RS660 and Sta Level. So, if you have something with speed already like an 1176 or Distressor then I'd go with the RS660. If you'd like to stick to 2 channels , I thought the Retro Revolver was really great and very versatile! I hope that helps and doesn't further complicates things 😁

Not sure if I'd use a Revolver on mastering, but maybe my judgements are unfounded. The thing that I like about the Comp. Two is that it is a real mastering compressor. That TS660 though... tough call. Thanks for the reply!

I've used the Sta on vocals and bass over the years, but I'm considering other options.

The biggest problem I have with all these great vari mu comps is that none of them are really that similar to me at all. It's a problem because I want/need them all. I'll rotate through them depending on who I'm working with at the time but one of these days I'm going to figure out how to keep them all 🤑 Case in point, a couple of the artists I work with that the Sta Level is the perfect fit, the RS660 wasn't right for them. On Joey Barnes, the artist I used in the full RS660 review, the Sta Level was ok on him but the RS660 in limiter mode with time constant 3 was like magic.

A few months ago I mentioned the BG2 was the winner on Nick's vocals and was privately asked via DM what serial number I had. I'm not going to speculate why because I responded and got no response, but not everything takes the cake on every source. Doesn't mean the RS660 isn't the bomb. It will live on bass for us.

Yeah I think what has really lead to the concept that a dynamics processor’s sound comes from the land of modern VCA’s where pretty much everything is using THAT VCA’s.
