First little session with this mic yesterday. Only a very limited vocal part but wow I love this mic. Super nice top end and very creamy, the best word I can find. The only thing I don't get, other than for the original look, is the solution with the swivel mount on the cable. With a normal mic stand I always get a lot of LF from feet stomping. Are there stands that prevent this? I always order a normal shock mount for mics with this solution. Hopefully there are a fitting shock mount for this model too. Yes. Because this is a copy of the original the cable mount is the same as AKG came up with for the C12 annd the 251. If you check out old pics you'll see that many came up with after market solutions or hung them upside down from long booms overhead.

The Latch Lake Bigfoot is pretty effective at reducing stand transmissions. On the more cost efficient side, the Tama Iron series stands are an excellent alternaitve with solid stanchions and really good clutching. I replaced all my K&M stands with the Tama's and use a BigFoot in my vocal booth. Another benefit from the Bigfoot is the reduced footprint and mounted wheels that make moving it around very simple. These are modern solutions that address stand transmission but there are also EU made stands like vintage Beyerdynamic stands that also have solid stanchions and pretty decent clutches. Lastly I'd look at shockmounts that can accomadate your microphone and it's cable that greatly reduce rumble transmission. There is a European based company I can't think of the company name atm, but they make very well designed mounts that focus on extreme stand rumble reduction, not cheap! I'll see if I can find their name and post it here

Hey, thanks for the input and the tip! I believe I know the company that make (made) shockmounts and neither I remember the name. I believe it's the same company that made mounts for Neumann, but they're out of business. I got two of their shock mounts for my Flea 49s and no they weren't cheap. I've asked Ivan @ Flea about recommended mounts and of course a new cable. Also googled a bit and found a 251 mount from Peluso, so this will be solved. Thx again!

Ah, I see. Too bad they are out of business. You are in Sweden so maybe give Bo a ring and see if he will sell you one of his 251 mounts. They are creme coloured and that might not match up with that stunning pearl colour FleA boldly chose to use. I'm a huge FleA fan and just based on the look of their 251, I'm drooling over just how beautiful the aesthetic is. Looks are really important to me, especially if we are talking about a microphone that will primarily be put in front of singers. Hands down the FleA GA251 and TF251 are the most beautiful replicas, but the FleA is off in it's own class and league. I would absolutely kiss the FleA251 open mouth and lick it's beautiful body, I think metaphorically speaking, maybe literally..lol Might be the sexist microphone EVER made by anyone ever. So gorgeous that FleA251. Just call it love okay

I have four of the Latch Lake stands (2200 & 3300), and they all are so heavily connected to the floor, that even foot steps near them transmits LF through the stand if there is no shock mount on the mic.
My Lucas CS4 has no shockmount, it is mounted like a 251, and really needs a mic shock mount. I think my Heiserman 47T mounts will fit, and Heiserman sell them separately - very good quality too.
Nothing beats a quality shock mount .

I would just grab a Rycote mount and be done. They are really nice and I never feel like any mic is going to fall.

Absolutely. A great stand without an effective shock mount is an incomplete set up. My LL's are on set atop gym mats and I have none or little transmission as a result.

I would just grab a Rycote mount and be done. They are really nice and I never feel like any mic is going to fall. Let’s not forget the Rycote’s also each fit a range of diameters so in most cases each covers more ground than a typical shockmount. The other thing is a lot of shock mounts are built with cheap pot metal and if you start asking about the actual properties of the suspension bands everyone looks at you like your speaking another language.

Hello all,
How does the flea 251 compare to the telefunken (usa) 251e? Other than of course being half the price.
I’ve tried the tele and it is a nice mic but haven’t tried the flea and looking at other options.

This is NOT too much info, it's awesome. Thanks for this and I hope that project goes swimmingly well and I hope that you make a thread chronicling the recording adventure. The GA251 is a tube mic, no? It's on my radar, thinking maybe later in the year. GAH, I want sooooo many mics. Yea, the GA251 is indeed a tube mic.
I was working in Sydney recently on a really big session at 301 and after using their Telefunken 250 (in omni), I had to have one of my own or something really close. I don't have quite the same criteria as a studio like 301, and the GA251 ticked a lot of boxes for me, enough to commit.
It's a wonderful sounding well built beautiful microphone built by an equally fantastic human.
I only have to impress me really. My friend suggested looking at ADK custom shop for the project and that's how the Cremona came into my view. I think it's a very competent microphone with a well tuned capsule and very rugged yet attractive build quality. The TF51 and GA251 presented me with a bit of a conundrum that was made really easy for me to decide. After hearing both side by side and with a Telefunken and a Upton, I didn't want to have to pick between the TF51 or the GA251, so I picked both.
Very different microphones but as soon as I heard each one, I could hear myself using it right away. Neither are the TFunk but neither is the Upton ftm. I immediately did not want the Upton at all if I'm honest and I felt that Bo's GA251 was very much in the same realm as the Funk, different slightly but generally and overall definitely playing on the same pitch. With the TF51 and the GA251, I can't for the life of me imagine ever selling either. I don't really have that much time to contemplate the minutia, nor do I have the disposable income to indulge something that could only distract me from my day to day functionality.
I hear the differences, they just don't mean SFA to me in practical applicable terms.
Be interested to know which of the 3 mics I would recommend after 6 months of consistent use.
You mentioned Australia and so I was wondering if you considered the beesneez 251 offering when deciding (I believe it’s the tribute 2).

I’ve tried the tele and it is a nice mic but haven’t tried the flea and looking at other options. There is a vintage king comparison comparing vintage TF251, modern TF251, Heiserman, Bock, Flea and a few others. Very comprehensive review. IMO, and for most - not all, the Heiserman was the leader. Even over the vintage 251. I think there is a long thread on here about it.

Bill there was no vintage 251 in that comparison. That was an early Telefunken USA mic though it was a bit confusing in their explanation.

Yeah, a little confusing the way they worded it. Having the same "Telefunken" name has always been confusing as to original vs. rebranded. <thumbsup>

He's been busy taking care of clients. And dealing with things related to his Dad's recent passing. Great ear. So I look forward to his comments too. Chris

I do like some of the Alchemy line. (Haven't directly tried any ADK's) SO much competition under $2K now though. Good for the cheaper seats, like mine. Chris

Love shoot outs! But found the resonances of that room and the background noise a little disturbing. And also questioning why singers sang without cans, especially the male vocalist. Some of his belting was really piercing and if he'd heard himself perhaps he'd done something to even it out a little. Also, would have been nice to hear the female vocalist singing the soft parts a tad closer to the mics. But anyway..to me the differences weren't that big, lovely mics! I have no regrets getting the Flea. I felt the Bock was a bit brighter than the rest, but in a nice way, and the Warm sounded the least 3D to me.

The old US replicas were supposed to have vintage parts - capsules, tubes etc they had bought from the Austrian factory but there was no big leap in quality. The Heiserman still killed them imo.

i just love my flea, sounds awesome and looks awesome, i cannot say to much, i used Tele one to and flea capsule feels smoother than "og", with more dynamics.
Tonal speaking where in that same ballpark that the other components are gonna be more important, like preamp/comp etc, i was going for Heiserman but being that close to the real thing, and having a cooler look, i just keep mine and make records lol
