Thx, I have the stam 67, which I really like, sometimes I’d like a little less gooeyness, sounds like I should play with proximity, and eq, maybe roll some tubes! Best bang for the buck is the cserrano S87 Sounds like MY favorite vintage U87, and compliments a 67 very very well. And Carlos is one of us here, and we've done very well to support our own. And both sound fantastic through an audioscape 76!

A bit late, but I enjoyed this shootout. The differences between the mics were well demonstrated with your vocals.
I have a BU87I C and like it a lot. I wish I had a reference as well done as your video when deliberating which one to pick up.

I am working on a new 87. There is this little adjustment keeping me away from nailing my all time favorite vintage 87 on a specific frequency. So far I have failed miserably but I am getting closer each time. This new and final 87 will be a 1:1 replica (at least sonically) of the best out of 30 old 87's I managed to get a hold off and the studio's favorite. I am pretty happy with the MK3 as it sounds virtually identical to my personal 87, I'll send it over in a few weeks Josh! Josh, I’ve got your Tim Campbell SA87. Great mic! My only wish is that you can find a mic body that weighs a little less. It makes the mic really heavy and stresses my poor mic stands. I do have a couple Latch Lakes that can handle it, but a mic body along the lines of Neumann weight would be ideal! You have a unique and wonderful microphone. Tim's capsules are nothing short from excellent. I will try to make a new body a little smaller, these days supply chains and tooling can take forever, even years, so I can't promise. Maybe a new and stronger shockmount would be easier to produce.

Will it use a Pizzolante capsule? Which transformer? What's the sonic difference here between a Lundahl and a Sowter (in my experience both have a different signature across their lineup) in the mic?.
Thanks!
I am still testing and auditioning parts but yes, most likely a new version of both capsules and transformers from the same manufacturers. The Lundahl and Sowter sound pretty much identical on this circuit, the Lundahl has a little bit more top end.

Speaking of shockmounts...
I never use the included mounts -- and spider mounts look antiquated.
Instead, I just get the appropriate Rycote (~$50) and move forward. I love those things, and wish I could opt-out of manufacturer shockmounts, for a discount.

It’s not really the shock mounts. The Stam mic body is thick brass or steel. So heavy compared to the Neumann body tubes. My K&M stands droop every time. Killer sounding mic, though. Especially into my Coil CA70.

Sorry -- I wasn't referencing your heavy mic problem...just saying that I don't like spider mounts, or most other mounts.
Go Rycote!!!

Can't you just tell me what to think, Seawell? Do I really have to listen and ruminate?? I’m actually asking you guys what I should think and hoping it’s the cheapest option 🤣 Are they making cheap Neumans now?

Wow… this is the best news for me! I listened again last night and B,C,D,E all had the 87i vibe, A just didn’t. I’m pretty happy. As I went to sleep I realized E was right there with B and D. C was good too, kind of a middle road. So I’m pretty excited. Well the internet was right when it said U87ai, ain’t right. A was pretty behringer clone level imo. I recently used a behringer and u87i on 2 amps, and A gave me the same clean but un-usable vibe as the behringer, like it wants to be an 87 so bad. I didn’t want to say that in case it was a boutique builder experienced some build issues…you know the market is flooding with AI counterfeits right? You might want to make some extra close inspections. Yeah lots of knock offs which is why I got this AI brand new from a reputable dealer. Oh, so it's a NEW Ai.
Not all AIs are created equal. I own an older AI, built prior to the Sennheiser takeover. IMO it beats the pants off of most brand new ones.

Well this thread does raise the question if a microphone in a shootout doesn't sound like the original, no matter how likeable the sound, is it a good clone? That's a great point. When I went in to this shootout I asked myself 2 questions: 1. Which one sounds the most like a vintage U87? 2. Does that matter? As far as what mic or mics I'm keeping, I decided that didn't matter as obviously I'd want the mic that sounds the best to me. As far as manufactures marketing and selling something as an 87 clone, I do think that matters a lot. Evidently not, since there is no original U87 in this shootout, only a brand new Ai.

When did Sennheiser take over?

When did Sennheiser take over? Google tells us 1991. My mic was, IIRC, around '87 when I checked the serial. It had previously been owned by Fantasy, I'm told. Cost me $1,500. Deal!

I’ll ask this question here since this seems to be an active thread:
Is anyone else’s Serrano 87 180 degrees out of phase with most all of their other mics? I don’t own 25 mics but I have at least 10. And everything I’ve put it up with I need to reverse the polarity of the Serrano. I’ve never had that with another mic.
It sounds great but seems weird to me.

Easy wiring fix if you can solder.

The polarity thing happens a lot and I'm not sure if there's a right or wrong as my Stam 87 , Beesneez Arabella and Gefell CMV 563 are all reverse polarity to what conventionally is considered correct . Who knows? Cheers, Ross

Just got a chance to record something with the United 87. (United 87 is ready for boarding). Anyway - I just recorded two vocal passes. Thought they sounded really great. Then realized I had the 80Hz cut on the 0011. Had to run out, so I’ll do two (modern and vintage) without the cut and post all of them.
First impressions are extremely positive. Like - there’s absolutely zero pointiness in the region I get pointy (1-3khz). The modern is a little brighter and vintage a little more rolled off. I might just be keeping it. Wish I hadn’t bought that damn SM7 2 weeks ago.

The United is an interesting idea, the two mikes in one, seems well spec’d for parts and competitively priced .

Not that I’d probably tackle it because it’s easy enough to hit the phase switch - but what would be the easy wiring fix for something like this?
