I just got my Serano S-87. It’s a great mic!

Thanks so much! I think they sounded not close at all. I consistently liked A the most and was expecting it to be the U87ai it turned out to be. I ranked D as number 2 and thought it was the U87. Congrats to BeezNeez for offering such a great sounding affordable mic. I've got one of Ben's capsule in a U47 clone I built and really love the sound of. So, I'm finally ordering that U87ai... it's got that top end clarity and midrange punch that's perfect for pop vocals. It sounds bright but right. The Serrano isn't my cup of tea. Found it to restrained and obviously EQed on top at the same time. Not bad (none of the mics had that cheap condenser sound we all loathe), but nowhere near as full and alive as the Neumann. The original U87 could probably profit from some maintenance. The Warm I found to be unremarkable. I’m glad you found it useful! I agree, they are all different enough that you can pick out your favorite & go from there. Now I’m hoping the 67 clone market gets as competitive as the 87 in the near future.

Thank's! I signed up a long time ago and have been a long time lurker, but didn't realize until now that I never posted here.
Interestingly, in this shootout I do prefer the sound of the old U87.
Maybe the room and the preamp change the response have something to do with it, too.

Josh - would be interesting to include the new UT mic with Ai and i modes into your excellent shootout! I think that's a great idea Bill! A buddy of mine here in NC recently built a Dachman Audio U-87 clone as well. Once I get the Stam Mk3, I'll shoot to do a new round with at least these 3 mics included.

If you mate a Dachman, with a C800G you get a... DachSon. Chris

Has anyone tried the Stam Audio SA-87 MK3? It's supposed to use the Pizzolante Labs capsule (from Braingasm Lab, he confirmed on his blog that he worked for Stam in Chile) and the samples of his mics on the Braingasm website sound great.

Joshua is going to send me one soon! I tried the MK1 a few years ago and liked it a lot so I'm curious to hear the new version. I have a Stam SA-47F here now, hoping to finish up that review this weekend!

FWIW, I have a Stam Mk1 with Heiserman snd Sowter; it's always on the stand and is a workhorse. Cheers, Ross

In the comparisons I have heard the Stam was better than many other clones insofar as it didn't have the "fizzy" cheap microphone high end. But it didn't quite hit the mark of the balanced/clear/smooth U87i sound either.
The well-kept/restored U87i in the comparisons have a certain natural beauty/elegance on any source nothing else so far could match.
I think I will order an MK3... the U87ai isn't really what I had hoped for it to be... I'll likely return it.

I've got quality solid state preamps. And quality tube mics. A U87 should sound great with a nice solid state preamp...

The couple of AI clips Vincent ran through his Demeter sounded great, when I heard them.
I know it's personal preference, but I like toning down the brighter/modern 87. Not as relaxed sounding as a vintage U87i, on its own IMHO. Chris

I am working on a new 87.
There is this little adjustment keeping me away from nailing my all time favorite vintage 87 on a specific frequency.
So far I have failed miserably but I am getting closer each time.
This new and final 87 will be a 1:1 replica (at least sonically) of the best out of 30 old 87's I managed to get a hold off and the studio's favorite.
I am pretty happy with the MK3 as it sounds virtually identical to my personal 87, I'll send it over in a few weeks Josh!

Will it use a Pizzolante capsule? Which transformer? What's the sonic difference here between a Lundahl and a Sowter (in my experience both have a different signature across their lineup) in the mic?.
Thanks!

My only wish is that you can find a mic body that weighs a little less. It makes the mic really heavy and stresses my poor mic stands. I do have a couple Latch Lakes that can handle it, but a mic body along the lines of Neumann weight would be ideal!

How would people describe the sound differences eteeen (between) a gold 67 and 87 ? I would love to answer your question, only from own POV and experiences of course, but what do you mean by a 'gold 67'? I can tell you how my 67 differs from my vintage 87s, 87ai and S87. But please tell me what you mean by gold and what kind of differences you are curious about.

Typo just met good, so really how do the 67 and 87 differ sonically, like is one more mid forward, one more detailed etc.? A 67 is notably more mellow and has more warmth than an 87. It has the tube gooeyness to it but doesn't have the bark of many others. The top end is there all the way to ~16K but isn't hyped. It's just beautiful sounding. When it works, it REALLY works, and when it doesn't it still kind of works. It sounds very expensive. It sounds finished. An 87 is more midrange forward but also has quite a bite to it. We're so used to the sound of it that we instantly recognize it. It is seldom the best mic on anything but it is never the wrong mic. It will always work and sounds professional It takes EQ really well, but it usually needs EQ to sound finished. JMHO which will vary from day to day depending on what I'm using them on. Today I used a pair of 87s on room stereo capture for drums. The 67 hasn't been switched on yet.

Thx, I have the stam 67, which I really like, sometimes I’d like a little less gooeyness, sounds like I should play with proximity, and eq, maybe roll some tubes!
