Knee/dick mic usually, a Neumann KM131 omni, usually most of the snare sound. If it's not hard hitting, MK-012 omni. Otherwise a dynamic.

I actually really like an Earthworks cardioid on snare. I’ve got an SR30 (no longer made) and an SR69 (the original name for the SR30). Just fantastic, IMO. Off axis coloration is minimal. Now they have those gooseneck mics for snare and toms - haven’t heard those. I do some session work with Dave Mattacks from time to time, and he brings one of those gooseneck EWs to sessions for his snare. Sounds quite good, though it's super bright way up in the tippy top end so you need to be particularly mindful of hi hat bleed. Not really a problem with a drummer of Dave's calibre, but I'd think twice about using it as a go-to for my general day-to-day drum recording work. Love his playing, I had the pleasure of working on Joe Boyd's audio book and Dave is all over many of Joe's best productions.

Of course - the 84 is a classic on snare, but these days, I'll rarely risk one unless I know the drummer well and they are controlled. The 184 can sound great as well. Also, surprisingly, the MXL 991 or 603/604 can sound excellent.

KM84 on snare, position on the side of the drum an inch or two sideways from the vent hole;e to avoid blasts. Set the top/bottom balance with the height of the mic on the side of the shell. A 451 EB will work in a pinch, but the 84 is better. Would not use a 451B, although I do like the wooden box it came in.

I've never gotten to use my Soyuz 011FET mics on snare (or any other part of the kit), but I think they would sound pretty kickass.

Great stuff, folks. Keep 'em coming. I have an extra M295 you could borrow for a bit especially since I am getting ready to send a fresh batch of songs. That would be amazing!

I own the Soyuz FET SDCs and a Soyuz FET LDC, but I honestly can't keep up with what they're called anymore. They should've gotten their naming convention down before they went to market, methinks...

I’ve been thinking about trying this route instead of the tried and true 57.
Question, is anyone actually minimizing hi hat bleed to any real level anyway? Why not just make the bleed sound good?
That’s kind of where my head is at. Maybe it’s time to just give up on hi hat bleed and embrace the suck. At least make the bleed sound nice.

I generally use hypercardioid mics on snare. I have an MC012 with a hyper cap there right now. Honestly I don't get too crazy about placement, I know a couple good spots.

I grabbed a section from a scratch drum track that I laid last night. Bounced out a clip of full kit, snare top only, toms only, and snare/toms only. Earthworks DM20 on snare and toms. Everything is flat in the box, but I generally compress and eq on the way in. RND 5015 pres/comps, snare is hitting an API 550B, toms are going through Alta Moda EQ's. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Yskw2PZ_CDTdC3XwEgNaXA236-IHAL3h?usp=sharing

I'm bringing this to the studio today. Hopefully I'll have time to listen before my brother's band shows up for mix revisions.

Funny thread. Sounds great about your clips jcoutu1 You can never get tired of different ways to get a good snare sound. This is nothing new and Andrew Scheps does it all the time. But have been using a Vanguard V4 aimed at snare body lately. Then I run mic saturation in BB105 KIT Plugin. Voila, that's all. Lovely dirty snare sound to blend in with taste.

Favorite by far: AKG C460 with the ring adapter and a CK1 capsule. Rejects bleed and captures the snare sound like you hear it when your playing it. KM84 is also great, of course. Beyer 930 is good on top or bottom. Neumann TLM102 also pretty good, but bleed isn't pleasant BLUE Kiwi in hypercardioid aimed at the snare from over the kick drum is also beautiful... great as a crotch mic.

That's my preferred setup too. Akg ( I've used the 460, 452, 451) with the CK1 capsule. I feel like that mic has the right amount of brightness while slightly getting rid of some mids. On a really thin sounding snare I might prefer the 84 because the mids are more pronounced.

Problem one is the average sounding tone.
Problem 2 is that one hit to the front and the end of your capsule flies off. This problem doesn't exist with a SDC because it isn't necessary to get the mic even close to the danger zone.

Jim Williams turned me on to a stock ST31 for snare. I picked one up a while ago, but haven’t tried it yet. Funny thing is, just last week, I had the perfect session to try it on snare, but I had forgotten I had it until this post!

I've got an RE510 that I like to use for live acoustic gigs with a supercardiod pattern. I just rigged it up on my snare but it's too late to try it tonight. Curious if any of y'all have gone this route with good results.

Not many condensers have done it for me in the past , sometimes a 451EB taped to a Beyer 201, even though it is killer, I won't let my KM84i near a snare drum any more. Sometimes a 57 just works with the right music (with the TAB/AMI transformer)
Lately the TUL SNR1 mic has been the bomb for me. A mic built specifically for snare duties.
