It’s been around for a some time and still has never been on their website for some reason. They’re still making it, as far as I know. I’ve been so close to ordering their guitar amp mic and snare mic a few times for quite a few years, but have never pulled the trigger.

I’ve been thinking about trying this route instead of the tried and true 57. Question, is anyone actually minimizing hi hat bleed to any real level anyway? Why not just make the bleed sound good? That’s kind of where my head is at. Maybe it’s time to just give up on hi hat bleed and embrace the suck. At least make the bleed sound nice. That's not what I'm thinking about here. I generally use hypercardioid mics on snare. I have an MC012 with a hyper cap there right now. Honestly I don't get too crazy about placement, I know a couple good spots. That’s the fun part of snare. You go wide pattern, okay it’s picking up the whole kit, narrow like a super or hyper cardiod and that damn rear node is picking up a cymbal. You go underneath and now you have to find a position that is as much drum as snare.

The SNR1 is a new design, contact them. You may get more info from their Facebook page, which I cannot / will not access (ever). IMO much better sounding than a 57, really great side rejection for hats, more open sounding, and a little peak at 3k.
I really like the G12 guitar amp mic, requested by Kevin Shirley. This mic is excellent sounding, so I took the plunge on the snare mic. They are a small boutique mic company operating out of South Africa. They have some pretty heavyweight fans too.

Not many condensers have done it for me in the past , sometimes a 451EB taped to a Beyer 201, even though it is killer, I won't let my KM84i near a snare drum any more. Sometimes a 57 just works with the right music (with the TAB/AMI transformer) Lately the TUL SNR1 mic has been the bomb for me. A mic built specifically for snare duties. I generally dislike and object to any of thje (usually drum) mics that claim to be "optimized" for a particular instrument or narrowly defined musical application. I find thst a well designed wide range mic will always deliver superior rersults and will not annoy me by attempting to hobble my choices. I choose to make my own mistakes.

The neutrality of off-axis sound is key.

This why being an omni sdc ninja beats all! Say after me “there is no off axis sound”. : )

Great stuff, folks. Keep 'em coming. I have an extra M295 you could borrow for a bit especially since I am getting ready to send a fresh batch of songs. I got to use the M295 Greg sent out for the first time today. On thing I really noticed was how well (on the top, just outside the rim) was how nicely it represented the decay of the snares. Thanks again, buddy!

The Type-19 is an LDC in a drum friendly package and sounds killer on any drum or on overs. The rejection in cardioid is great. I know guys who use them on the whole kit. now we need the Type-21....

Wish i had a KM84 based upon research…. But i have this cheap tube chameleon labs mic that can sometimes work. Its pretty bright, kinda 451 sounding.
Usually condensers on snare need a bit of compression from the start vs a dynamic, which already has that built in.

DPA 4003/6 is a long-time favorite. Omnis on snare are pretty forgiving about where you place them, and you can still get decent separation because they can get a lot closer to the batter head without it sounding like a timbale.

Yeah I said it, now talk amongst your selves. True, but it's an off-center omni, as I've depicted in the attached photo. Which accounts for why its off-axis is so pleasant, IMHO.

Off topic but just want to say bgrotto that is way cool that you work w/ Dave Mattacks, he’s one of my all-time favorites. I’ve always wanted to try km54 on snare ala Black Sabbath Paranoid (which was basically a bunch of km54s on the kit), but I haven’t yet.

I wouldn't DARE put one on snare, LOL. But they sound great as OHs!! Sadly, one of them has a blown tube, though, so I haven't been able to use them over a kit in a while. And yeah, Dave rules! Great guy, insanely good player. One of the easiest drummers to record in terms of feel, tone, and getting home in time to make dinner for my wife.

I remember some old thread I read where some producer swore by using a cheap-o Sterling ST31 on snare. Claimed it was the best snare mic ever.
I also came across someone claiming the Earthworks SR25/30 series was the best snare mic ever. I have one of these and it's pretty good, but even though it's "cardioid", it's much too sensitive to use as a snare mic on a live kit. It's a great mic for taking samples though.

Interested in this as I have had some success with a 451 but almost always use dynamics. I spent quite awhile trying to get a snare mic to record what I was hoping to hear but after I learned about different snares and different tunings - it's 98% in the snare & the playing.

Absolutely true! Even knowing that, I’ve still spent 25-years and counting, blaming myself or my tools. Really though, it’s the drummer’s choices and musicianship! That doesn’t just apply to drums though, it’s all around!

What a cool invention! Now drummers can practice knocking the heads off two mics at a time!
