My buddy just got one that was up when I visited last week, very beautiful to look at. I'm working with him next week and will actually get to listen then. I'm taking my Barbaric/AMI 49 (with a k49 and ac701) to compare. I'm curious to see if I'll leave really happy or bummed with GAS. I'm eager to hear how these compare, as I also have Barbaric M49 with Neumann capsule and the same tube Neumann is using (6SB-V). The big difference is mine has the AMI BV11R transformer, which is specifically designed to make up for the tonal differences of not using the AC701k tube. From what Neumann has stated about their transformer matching the original, it sounds like they didn't do anything to compensate for the tone of a different tube. Do both of you have C versions? I really should have Barbaric do a traditional C version for me at some point. Have a half-dozen other types ahead of though, so that’ll probably be some years.

I'm highly skeptical of a statement like this about the design of the AMI transformer, it's somewhat magical thinking since the tech doesn't actually work that way. I disbelieve that one can set out to design a transformer to compensate in this way. There's so many apples to oranges in all of this, it's clear as mud no matter how you slice it, so statements like that pass minimally challenged.

I agree, although, it’s easy to compare the Classic and R versions and hear and/or see the difference.

I had to go back and look at Chris' post on the Barbaric Facebook page to remember the transformer, mine has the AMI BV11 (he posted about it Oct 13, 2017 if anyone's curious to see the guts). This mic and my IOAudio 67 that Doug put the Neumann transformer in are my 1 and 2 mics. We have a busy day of actual studio work scheduled but I might take my 67 too, just incase time permits a shootout (my buddy also has a pair of the 67 reissues).

On the other site I compared Flea’s with the same tube and capsule and the Neumann has a slightly more retro sound. Each had their strengths. That was vocals. No switching of the M49V circuit.

Doug - I don't like the way it sounds in STEREO. Got a mic/placement for that? Fun fact: It's not actually stereo. It's a psycho-acoustic pseudo-stereo effect.

I don't know the first thing about transformer design. AMI sells both their BV11Classic and their BV11R transformers. Here's what their website says about both versions: BV11Classic: Direct Replacement for M49/M50, historically correct. Tube Setup: AC701, AC701k BV11R: BV11C with modern lamination, four mount holes, enhanced low and low-mid Frequency response. Tube Setup: EC92, EF732, 5840, 6072a 12AY7WA Would the modern lamination account for the different tonal response? I knew I wasn't going to pony up for an AC701k so I went with the BV11R

I've used mid-side a lot and I like it quite a bit. I'm not sure what the textbook definition of stereo is, but what I can say is that mid-side will track a moving sound from left to right. Seems like stereo to me.

I knew I wasn't going to pony up for an AC701k so I went with the BV11R Lamination type will affect distortion profile, but the chief difference in those listings is the transformers are ratio'd for different tube loading, because they are different tubes with different load specs. You'd do that as a matter of course, nothing specifically to do with matching the tone of a different tube type, outside of making each type act optimally (or non-optimally if that was the case). Related, you see a lot of modern reproduction tube preamps that use different ratio transformers than the originals, because no one makes those ratios anymore. Combine that with the question of the lam types (nickel, steel) and blends, you can end up with a totally different distortion profile. All of that in addition to the question of whether the tube has any sound of it's own in the specific circuit. Neumann will have balanced all those concerns in their many and varied decisions.

I'm not sure what the textbook definition of stereo is, but what I can say is that mid-side will track a moving sound from left to right. Seems like stereo to me. Build it out with some more elements and you have ambisonics, which will track a sound anywhere. Hollywood routinely sticks ambisonic mics on moving cameras to aid in sound design for location accuracy.

I just had a chance to hear one and it was glorious. The bottom end was amazing and made my chest tingle when singing into it. Super warm and definitely a crooners mic. It is a different flavor than what I have but I am not a crooner and luckily I didnt get the "gotta have it" feeling that usually happens when I hear something stellar. My wife and family will thank me later....

... I was out of the blue able to get my hands on one of these M49 V’s this week, #161 ... Apologies for the mundane nature of my first post, but I just received an M49V yesterday and the serial number followed the #03xx series consistent with the prototype that Klaus reviewed. Have they re-started at #001 again or do they just pick them out a box at random.. or did they pick the review one out at random from the production run?

Those mics are going to sound amazing going through pretty much anything. As a piano player I'm like "No shit, a pair of M49's sounds great on piano? You don't say. I'll get right on it!" Haha. Maybe I could get one and play the left hand then overdub the right hand.

Not an M49 V, obviously, but a really neat recording with a vintage 49 on vocals:

Just received my m49v a few days ago. What a dream mic.. I've been lusting after an m49 for so many years. Couldn't be happier! I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of an aftermarket wooden case for the m49. As beautiful as the new neumann case might be, it's not the sturdiest. I prefer to keep my mics in Peli cases.. Thanks in advance for any help!

That's a great idea, thanks Paul!
Also, thank you for pointing me in the right direction many many times over these last years.
From Coil audio to Olympic and now this m49v.
I've been a longtime reader of the purple place and this site but I try to listen before adding any clutter.
So much healthy back and forth here.
Cheers
