Could it be an EF86? I chatted with Klaus briefly, years ago, about doing a DIY build inspired by an M49. Klaus hated the idea (haha). But he suggested that, if I did do it, to use a tube like an EF86, that was worthy of being in a mic. The ef86 is not a subminiature tube unfortunately!

I can't even envision enough room in that body for an M49-esque circuit along with an EF86 tube, but interesting thought.

The tube is a subminiature tube and according the Neumann representative last night it’s “a tube used in another one of our current microphones”…which could only be what’s in the M149/M150 I believe If it’s a 6111 as in the M149, I’ll be genuinely surprised. That was always one of the main complaints people had about that mic. It’s a $5 or $10 tube IIRC. Of course, I still think the M149 sounds phenomenal, but I definitely hated that the tube was soldered in place. Not to mention it’d run you $400 if you ever needed a replacement from Neumann. Hopefully that won’t be the case with this one!

Tube mic guru, the late Tim de Paravicini, praised and used the 6111 tube. He designed the QUAD 24P phono amplifier to use the 6111. In fact he uses 4 of those tubes in the QUAD. It sounds really smooth and rich. De Paravicini was probably the world's #1 tube expert for the last 40 years.

I've soured on the mic. Was offered a place in line but declined. The reason I'm not moving on it is because of the tube, the marketing, the fact that it's not a real M49.
There are other new tube mics coming this fall that are built with love, are very authentic in build and in lineage--have the soul of a classic, and are unique.

I have to second that opinion, I have never heard a single piece Tim designed that didn’t make you go “ wow” think of Tim’s designs a cut above David Manley without the need for a fire extinguisher near by.

Do you know what tube Neumann is using in the new one? What makes it a fake or “not a real” Neumann M49 to you? I am genuinely curious. As we know the originals had two different tube types, transformer changes, and capsule changes. Cheers, Matt

Aren't you the guy that pushes the FleA stuff - all over the internet?
I'm sure it's a very good mic but does NOT have a Neumann capsule, does NOT have an AC701, does NOT have a Neumann transformer, etc. And you state that the new Neumann M49 is "not a real M49"?

That’s what I am trying to understand too. Everything but the tube (maybe) should be a 1:1 version of an M49.

It looks better IN the yoke than it does stand alone.

That case would end up in a closet and the mic would find a very protective home in a Pelican, Seahorse or ATA! I get the retro vibe and all and I really can’t complain because all my mics live in matching Seahorses.

Billy Ocean can't wait to buy your collection. But I just can't fathom why. His days of the High C's are long gone. Chris

And to think...I thought my mic lust was satiated after getting a Soyuz 017 Tube... I think I'm the odd one out around here sometimes, I appreciate a good sounding mic but I'd never drop nearly $10K on one (forget the ELAM for a second, that was an experiment). Too many sub $750.00 mic's that'll do a great job never mind in the $2 - 5K bracket.. Monitors and room treatment? I'd drop double the amount of the M49 without batting an eye lid.
A condenser IME is only as good as your room and the end result is dictated by what you can hear. Or something like that..

Klaus just posted on the other site some very positive impressions of a near ready M49V prototype Neumann sent him in April to review. He called the finish "fit and superb", and every circuit detail copied from the original to a fault, with Neumann even implementing a few of his suggestions. He says he'll post a more detailed review when he gets the released version, but he ultimately called the execution of the prototype at least on par (if not better) than the U67 RI and seems encouraged by the new management.
Very encouraging. Can't wait for the official details hopefully on Monday.
