1st clip = Nuemann 2nd clip = Serrano
?
Oh and thanks for your work guys!

Great sounding clips! Thank you for taking the time to do it. I'd be happy with either of those sounds for sure. My guess is A = Neumann and B = Serrano but I wouldn't be surprised if I have that completely backwards

The true acid test to judge any KM84 clone would be both 30 degrees off axis.

A is Neumann B is Serrano
Before I heard the Serrano, I assumed the low end would be a lot different. In this application I found the biggest difference around 1-2K. I did some tweaking and found that with a little EQ they were even closer. The Serrano is a a great mic especially for the price and responded very well to EQ etc. The Neumann is a special mic and has a way of forgiving frequencies that can easily poke out with other SDCs. A bit of built in compression type effect. I will definitely be keeping the Serranos in my mic locker and will be trying them other places on my drum and percussion rigs.

So much of that 84 sound is the almost Omni like linear off axis response. In most cases if your chasing the 84 sound without an 84 you will get closer with an Omni than a cardiod.

Awesome they arrived today . Will test out over weekend. Can anyone spot the red dot on the dark capsule or am i just getting too old? These felt very nice in my hand. They have a good weight to them and feel like a solid little mic. I agree with the previous poster that the capsules screw on and off very smoothly. i will have to test them out against my other original km84’s

I'm surprised they didn't sound more similar, based on the hype from Carlos.
We should have had this sort of comparison from the word go. Mainly due to the promotion that these will sound like an 84. It sounded good, but much less open.

It sounded good, but much less open. I think if vintagetubelug records the drums overheads with the Dark Capsules, it will sound much more similar. Also, I hope I can be vulnerable for a moment here and not sound unprofessional ... Naming the capsules as "standard" and "dark" might turn out not to be the best naming idea. It's the dark capsules that sound much more like the vintage KM84. I probably I should have named them "vintage" and "modern" and maybe I still can. As you all are noticing the Standard/Modern Capsule has less low end than the KM84 and a little more top end. The Dark/Vintage Capsule has the low end you would expect and less top end. So yeah, I hope more people will start posting with the Dark/Vintage Capsules. It's embarrassing to realize that I most likely (certainly?) messed of the names of the capsules. I think it comes from my strong bias and love for the acoustic guitar. So far I've recorded many tracks with the Standard/Modern Capsule and I just LOVE how it sounds on acoustic guitar within a mix. It cuts through so nice without sounding boomy. Take listen to these acoustic guitar and djembe tracks I just recorded a few minutes ago. There are 3 mics on here. One, the Neumann KM84 with a brand new capsule. Two, the Serrano 84 with Dark/Vintage Capsule. Three, The Serrano 84 with Standard/Modern Capsule. Excuse the poor acoustics as I am not currently in a studio space. Please have a listen and share your thoughts! Files are HERE!-Carlos

Regarding earlier post: It’s nice to see everyone enjoy A. B was instant love for me, less than 2 seconds.
That said, I’d love to have A or B, absolutely very little technical differences. And I’d love using the different capsules.
Also.. thank you to Carlos: THiNK! This guy, like only a handful of others, is a maniac chasing the unattainable! The price point is just incredible value for his effort. No profit driven company would ever do this. Guys like him are artists.

Thank you so much for doing another recording with the "Dark Capsules!" It's my fault that you didn't understand because I didn't do a good job there! The naming convention I had going was not super clear but let's correct this! From now on, let's call the dark capsule, the "Vintage Capsule". And let's call the other one the "Modern Capsule". I have uploaded here a legend that helps to identify which one is which. I have also updated the names on the website. I really appreciate all the feedback you all are giving. Warmly, Carlos Attachments:

I know its only a small thing, but I really like the wooden box. It seems to be made so much better then some other more expensive mics that I have had shipped in and have fallen apart. Pming about where you get these from.

I exceptionally liked the higher quality of the wooden box.

Pming about where you get these from. The little box joint Gefell boxes come to mind, those things always fall apart, if it wasn’t the hinges it was the box it’s self, I think most Gefell B-stock was broken boxes. While wooden boxes are pretty over the years I have decided I don’t care how pretty it is I’m all about protecting the mic, thus Matching Seahorse cases every mic in a ziploc bag with a Silica pack that changes color when they start to lose effectiveness. This also why I begged Ben at Beesneez to ship in Pelican rather than those cheap faux ATA’s

I just listened to the video on page 1 and it really is a very nice sounding mic and a very good price too.
I have a pair of vintage AKG 451E's that are very nice too, much brighter (in a good way) and one of these 84 clones would make a great complimentary alternative.
Actually at this price it makes sense to save a little longer and get a stereo pair.

For me the Km84 is magic on drums. I never heard any mic take cymbal bashers so well. How it is able to capture the weight of the stick hitting the cymbal is magic!
I wouldn't mind demoing these on my YT channel. I do own a couple of mint km84s and a pair of km86s 😎😁✌️

The price of the 84 is lower than I imagined. Even much more of a deal at whatever the intro price was. All the clips sound good so far. I’ll definitely grab one of these when the time is right.
