Used Cowboy's settings (more or less) Both - https%3A//soundcloud.com/johnandkris/statestAG - https%3A//soundcloud.com/johnandkris/wizagVOX - https%3A//soundcloud.com/johnandkris/wizvoxWell blow me down and burn my whiskers.... that sounds even better.... I am floored. Converters? is the tube making that much difference? or are you running through a B2 bomber or something like that. Thats an incredible tone... thanks again so much for doing this. If you are running symphony converters, what is the tubes that are different from cowboys? cheers Wiz man I am gonna be broke... 8) This is actually just through my Symphony.

I have spent the last couple of hours comparing both the STA versions here, with what I have here.. LA2A, WA1176 , FC500 (JLM audio Fet comp) LA500 (JLM audio solid state opto). Both cowboys and Johns STA perform for all intents and purposes exactly the same in their compression characteristics, and there is a difference sonically (small).
I can get my solid state opto to behave pretty close, but when I start belting at the end of the song, The STAs pull away significantly into 1st place. They are without a doubt the most impressive vocal compressor I have ever heard on my voice. This has been great fun and really interesting , again huge thanks to Cowboy and John... good blokes both.
cheers

I also have a JLM LA500, sure is a great comp for the money. Always track vocals with it. and sometimes acoustic too Aint no Sta though.
btw, where in Aus did you buy the WA76? enquired at awave, and there was a massive waiting list. really want to grab this puppy.

It definitely needed to be highpassed...there were boomy parts that a 80Hz HP would have knocked right out...Not sure why mine is boomy and his isn't though...

The AC through John's Sta-level is folding my MacBookPro speakers on bassy notes fwiw.. Not Cowboy's though. (Listening in a hotel room in Phoenix. Isn't somebody here from Phoenix? BOC at the Pressroom tonight.) Aww darn it, missed this, would have loved to see the BOC and maybe say hello. Had my head down, I'm neck-deep in a mix and learning the intricacies of Melodyne Editor as well. This software is ego-damaging. JK, Glendale is a suburb of Phoenix, so any place in the Phoenix area is an easy drive for me.

No I didn't do anything to it as far as eq Tony. You think the tube is adding more bottom? Of course, we should always leave room for user error (Damnit Jim, I'm a songwriter, not an engineer! )

I was hearing more in the low mids, yeah. Not particularly a bad thing and especially not bad for you.

here ya'll go, the diffs between cowboycoalminer and Johnkenn sta-level samples on wiz's stuff. diffs Cowboys file is a 48k/24 bit wave file JK Biggum's is a 44.1/24 bit wave file I played these all the way through, faders a 0, to capture the highest peaks, JK's averaging about 3.5db hotter from 1.8khz all the way down, then jumps to as much as 10db hotter in the bottom(explains donr speaker fold), mid range is fairly close, and the hi end is pretty even though cowboys is slightly smoother from 8k through 10k. Jk and cowboy have a dip at 2k, cowboys up about 3db just above 2k, which is a big deal for Mr Kennedy 8) To my ears, these samples sound how they look on the analyzer, hope this helps. see pics below T

Has anyone here done head to head comparisons on the Retro Sta vs the Retro 176. I have a Retro Power Strip and love it but was thinking of adding another flavor and really like the Retro gear. I will probably use it for the usual duties both tracking & mixing on acoustic guitars, resonator, violin, vocals. Again, not that the power strip is not awesome, but just looking for opinions.
