dont get me wrong man, i love it too, i've got like 20+ compressors lol, there is nothing more fun! You literally cant mix without them, that wasn't what i was saying. I was just making the case for using compression in the mix vs tracking, nothing more. Meh. I'm a big proponent of get it right in tracking vs. fix in the mix. "fix in the mix" lol, what ever....

"Hi, my name is cowboy, and I'm a compressor junky".
"Hi cowboy", says the group.
"I have no desire to cure this addiction. I simply came to this meeting to rescue any of my fellow junkies who might be thinking of quitting compression".
"Thank you, cowboy", says the group.
"There's nothing like flipping that big toggle switch and watching that needle come up", says cowboy.
"We like needles, too", says the group...

From the back of the room I leap up and say "thank God, life is too boring without compression...I was beginning to go crazy mixing without it. Everyone leaps up and welcomes cowboycoalminer and the meeting starts to turn into a party... Signals are being consumed and the craze starts. People start getting out of hand, tonycamphd is trying to hog-tie jcoutu1 with patch cables but jcoutu1 is making bird sounds and fighting him off with a Phoenix in each arm. Johnkenn is in the corner with his sweetwater magazine with a craze haze/look on his face like he's 13 looking at his first nudey magazine. henge and cowboycoalminer are jousting each other with 1176's and Sta Levels. RicFoxx holds his Burl B2 in the air and is calling out for the mothership. Life is good my Real Gear friends!!!

Shelly Yakus, who engineered and mixed "Agents Of Fortune" and "Spectres" at the Record Plant NYC for Blue Oyster Cult, once explained compression to me.
Paraphrasing, he said the purpose of compression was to take the energy out there, pointing to the band in the tracking room, and make it fit into and come out of here, pointing to the Auratones on the console meter bridge.

Here's the 2 passes through the Sta wiz. Didn't have time to level match anything and I pulled them into a 48 k session without realizing it (was working on one that came in in 48). But you can download these and get an idea. Acoustic was set to double-recovery 10 o'clock Vocal was set to double-recovery time 11 o'clock. Both the same input and output levels. db.tt/40PibGLAdb.tt/dwrUS5yGGreat singing by the way...

Wow.
........
WOW!!!
Doesn't my U87 sound great! 8)
A HUGE thanks to Cowboy and John for doing these. I really can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
I heard the compressor dig in, ONCE, and that was on the acoustic guitar (well as In I thought it was too much) which is just amazing. Just amazing.
What it does to the vocal, is remarkable.
Any idea what sort of gain reduction was going on? Not that it matters a tinkers cuss, it just sounds stunning.
Thats, mic, preamp, D-A, Comp, A-D (which convertor was it Cowboy, Burl or symphony?)
No EQ.
I put a little Relab on and thats done.
again... WOW
Serious Alert Mode ON
I actually welled up a little bit listening to it. You guys will understand, you struggle for many many many years, with singing , recording, engineering playing etc.. to hear my voice sit like that, is akin to a dream coming true.
I have had a couple of moments like that (first time you hear your song on the radio etc)
thank you Cowboy for giving me another
Humbly

It's this one...http://www.retroinstruments.com/sta-level.php I'm gonna run mine the exact same way and see what difference the 6386 makes. BTW - cowboycoalminer what peak GR did you do? Or did you just do it to where it sounded good?

Well I played around with it for a minute to get a feel for where it sounded best. I was pulling around 10 db on acoustic and on the vocal around 10 for the most part until that last section when he got a bit louder. Those passes were pulling around 15 off but just here and there. Input set to about 7, output set to about 9. I'm telling you boys, Phil has built a compressor that is unrivaled on a vocal IMO. Wiz, Symphony converse. No eq whatsoever. Just ran a straight print. Would you like for me to run a mix with the Bricasti and cost you some more money Wiz? JK, I'd love to hear what the difference is in the tubes, thanks.

Keep in mind wiz, that's where it sounded best to me on this sparse acoustic only tune. In an average mix, I would generally pull more reduction than that. Depending on what is going on in the mix. Sounds great either way I can tell you.

When you buy something like this that everybody wants, it's just like you got your money in the bank only your USING your money instead of letting it sit idle. You can flip one of these in a day if you want. Wouldn't recommend it though. You'll just buy another one later.

Almost there on my Bricasti budget as I had a pretty big store credit at one on the retail boxes.

Yeah that tube change is a lot smoother JK. Really tames the s frequency and accentuates the low mids. I always put the Fab Filter Desss on the strip and can get close to that sound.

The AC through John's Sta-level is folding my MacBookPro speakers on bassy notes fwiw.. Not Cowboy's though.

I think matt is from Glendale...wherever that is donr, you guys coming back to Nashville any time soon? Hate I missed you a while back! I think mine are a little louder than Cowboys...that could account for why they might sound "better"...When I listened at the same volume, I couldn't tell that much difference. That being said, there's an option on the Retro Sta-Levels where you can take out two of the 6Bj6 tubes and replace them with one vintage 6386. It's kind of a pain (not hard, just takes a 10 minutes) to swap them in and out - you have to unscrew a part, take the two out...etc. So, I've never like blind A/B'd the different combos...But I THINK I hear it compressing even more smoothly. That could totally be my imagination though.
