I bet the noise floor and the headroom are things they're not ready to get behind. Things that were improved in the KM184. Funny thing about that. The 'noise' present in the KM84 is musical noise and doesn't take away from the capture but adds to it in a musical way. In the same manner an 1176 or 1073 does. Those aren't 95dba SN pieces of kit, those are musical devices. Taking away from the 184 or making it irrelevant might be more the issue but regardless, as ericn affirmed... it is never ever going to happen. That was bold and I'll guarantee you took tremendous courage on the part of the individual who first proposed it to senior management and then the senior manager who brought it to upper management at Sennheiser. Someone's job was on the line! So glad to have had the opportunity to buy several of these and use them on a regular basis. They don't sound like 50 year old microphones, they sound like the 50 year old microphones did 50 years ago, from those who have had both experiences. And I love them! Ward I think a big part of what brought us the 67 and 47fet reissue was the fact that there are clones out there in the market so I don’t think the idea of limited run(s) was a hard sell. Sennheiser new they could them right and that demand existed at the price point they could do them. Neumann knows at this point the biggest competition for a new KM84 is a used KM84. If they feel they can’t do it for less than the price of the used prices they won’t do it. I was also recently reminded that SDC’s just don’t sell like LDC’s. I can’t say this was experience, but I had some very esoteric clients who bought SDC’s in quantity. For the most part this probably true, the guy who is going to buy one sub $1200 mic is probably going to grab a LDC thinking vocals first. I still would like to know if there is a cheap generic SDC body that we could re-thread to what the KM84 uses and then all we would need to do is have somebody build a board and find a transformer. The fact that Neumann still makes the capsules means all we need is a reasonably priced pre-amp.

If not, why would they want to provide them at a reasonable price if it undercut their own current SDC product?

Their capsules are uber-expensive when purchased separately. They are making plenty of profit.
Of course they are "supposed" to be for repairs, but people will do whatever they want.

Service departments don’t discount parts so a fair amount of the profit goes to the dealer. That said last time I priced one it was pretty much in line with say a Schoeps, so I can’t say they are expensive. There are a hell of a lot of KM8x out there so as long as the end user rather than a manufacturer was to buy the capsules I don’t think Neumann would be quick to end capsule sales.
