Sunday night about 930 pm, I was sitting watching TV, Jo had gone to visit the grandchild in Toowoomba about 5 hrs south of us....
My left arm started to lose sensation, then the fingers and thumb on my left hand went numb, then the left side of my mouth got numb (not unlike a dentists needle....)
I thought, holy shit I am having a stroke (vegetarian, don't drink, don't smoke... exercise most days) I immediately rang the 24hr nurses helpline... she immediately called an ambulance for me.....took a while to get to me... about 40 mins....they took me to hospital...turns out I had a TIA ( temporary ischemic attack) which is like a stroke but doesn't last long, the symptoms passed in 15 mins...
I spent the night in hospital, CT scan with contrast... etc etc ... going to the doctor later today to find out what's the plan going forward..
I am lucky here in Australia.. and where I live... that I got such good and free treatment....
I will update when I know more... but it was pretty fucking scary! and sort of focuses ones mind... LOL....
If you ever feel any symptoms of stroke...dont muck about...seek help immediately... it is super time critical...
cheers

Am I remembering correctly that Wiz has an m7, with his switch to UA, wonder how he views the m7 vs plug question. Still have it….on every mix. I have done extensive shoot outs with it against plug in versions of it. They aren’t as good imho….. if you can afford it …..demo it cheers Wiz

Its a great instrument there! Nice to see you keeping in your range.
I will say, the vocal sounds much better dry in this clip, at least on my system. I do realize that the EQ/DE-ESS/COMP it was meant to sit in the mix, but I instantly missed all the body and fullness.
Look forward to the tune,
FM
Thanks yeah even though chess didn't ask for the non effected vocal.. I thought it would be a good example of what it sounds like at recording stage vs what it might end up sounding like when in a mix.... for the lurkers out there... 8) cheers Wiz

I've always been curious what might happen after the mod if Universal Audio decides to update the firmware. Does it do a components check like some PCs do? Other than the clock, and that depends on how you view the clock as a component, all of the other mod components are analog components, so there wouldn't really be any parts that could be "checked" by the system. I'm curious about this mod. I've considered it before, but never pulled the trigger. It's not even because I necessarily had any complaints about the sound. It was mostly just FOMO, but that always got cured when I looked at the price and wondered if it actually made a difference. That said, I do own two x16s, so I would actually be able to mod just one and then do a true A/B comparison. That's always been part of my reason for not doing the mod. Before I got a second x16s, I was always put off by the ability to do a real comparison, and was otherwise left to reading opinions or listening to loopback files which were still passing thru my own Apollo. So I never could be convinced to pull the trigger. Maybe one of these days. I'll be curious to see what John thinks. Can you hear a difference between your x8 and x16 converters? cheers Wiz

Yeah, in the 90s I had a couple Adats and a Soundcraft board, a dbx comp, the lowest end one, ugh, an Ensoniq DP4, and a growing body of mics, including an SM7. What I didn’t have was a space. So did mostly demo level stuff, but a couple things were self released, and I was charging money for my services. So semi serious I suppose. Then came real employment, a dog, marriage, a kid etc. And recording went back to hobby status, where it has remained. Cheers, Geoff That was actually pretty serious money in that gear at the time here in Oz

I recorded a song on my iphone in a big room with lots of echo. I began to create a Logic project and used the little Tap Tempo app on my iPhone. I thought I had it right, but there's a slight difference between the iPhone track and the Logic project. How can I accurately find the tempo of the iPhone track? https%3A//soundcloud.com/martin-john-butler/thank-you-for-everything-w-piano-iphoneIn logic you could use smart tempo

or anyone use a chandler RS124 for tracking? can it get transparent? I have an Audioscape Opto (LA2A) and a Retro STA LEVEL. If you want transparent compression with very few artifacts then the STA is great. It can knock off 20dB without even sounding like its doing 5dB GR! But like the RS124 it does have a characterful tone - that's the nature of tubes and transformers. I had two STA levels and 2 LA2A's when I had my hardware... the STA level is just fantastic to sing through.... cheers Wiz

Monitoring is key. If I have to monitor off a Yamaha or something trying to be an LS 3/5A I always worry the guitars won't jump out of the speakers enough on anything not Yamaha. I fear the same whenever I hear an Apollo. Anything really colored or cool sounding, I feel I won't cook the mix enough to universalize it. The same is true with anything too exciting like a pair of A7X or some of the older Focals. 8) you would hate my room dan LOL... Apollo and Adams A7s 8) Wiz

Just thought I’d put this out there in case people were searching. After using the Apollo x, Burl AD and now the Hilo AD, I think I can say this: the Apollo comes in third there…but it’s not bad at all IMO. I notice more spikeyness, or strident mids. The Burl just kinda cooks things. Smiley face curve. Ive only done two vocals with the Hilo so far, but it’s the most transparent AD I’ve ever used. Same order for the DA… The Apollo is slightly mid forward and I hear distortion on top when things get pushed. The Burl DAC is great. Punchy as hell but a little shiny on top. Smiley face…it’s “exciting.” The word that comes to mind with the Hilo is “clean.” Like tons of headroom. I feel like it’s flat-er compared to the Burl… Anyway - short review, but if anyone has any specific questions. Have you got it all sorted with your Trinnov etc? cheers Wiz

Yep. Anything will work these days. I bet one could make the same thread about a Behringer interface and reaper, using only stock plugins. Hey do you think with that system you mention, you could overdub into the song as I am doing? with the amount of plugs I am running and get near zero latency? @svaart you are the reaper guy, could it do that? If so that's a very good thing for those financially challlenged cheers Wiz

No offense, it’s not about balance but preference. If you prefer the X and Luna: that’s great, others may feel differently. One is not right (balanced) and the other wrong, (unbalanced). It is about balance in my view as an owner of the system....because there is a lot of discussion about it and a lot of it sort of negative...and I am using it everyday.... There was a question from a user in the last couple of days, about getting an Apollo and some of the advice was to wait for a new one... So to me balancing the discussion was important to me.... my work is free to view/listen to at my website...they can listen to that and decide if the sonics are something they like or dislike.... No offence taken... cheers Wiz

Testify, Wiz! I haven’t been on Apollo platform for years, but I had SF and BF and thought they were really great. If I had wanted more of an all-in-one solution, I’d still be using Apollo. The interesting thing as well .... is the cost of this entire system.... excluding the bricasti... 8) Also I think there is no rush in reality for a new Apollo.....and personally I don't think it's coming any time soon...like in the next year cheers Wiz

There has been a lot of talk about HDX , Apollo, Pro Tools, AD convertors....
I am just now overdubbing a vocal.. and it struck me what I am actually doing....
I have a Mac mini M1, with 8 GB ram, running Ventura.
I am using LUNA and have an Apollo X8 and an Octo Satellite (8 DSP chips in it, and 6 in the Apollo for a total of 14)
I am tracking (overdubbing) my lead vocal, into a finished song.
I am using my U87i into 1084 Unison Preamp... I have c-suite noise reduction (not being printed just monitored) and a plate reverb as a comfort verb on the channel...as well as Studer A800 tape on that channel as well....
I have my mix buss with its full compliment of plug ins instantiated, including ATR102, API 2500, Ozone 11 !!!!!!.... all my verbs running. (Sound City, AMS RMX, Bricasti outboard, Pure Plate) EZdrummer 3, EZ bass VI's, all the guitars in the song...each of these tracks has A800 studer tape on them, EQ (pro q3) and UA comps like Fairchild, LA3A etc Sonarworks is running on the MAIN outs...
my Mac isn't breaking a sweat, the metering in Luna is 37% way in the green... my DSP usage is 47% and I am monitoring my vocal with no perceptible latency at all.....without committing the tape processing, the noise reduction processing....I also just tried it for the heck of it...and I can also run AUTOTUNE realtime X on that track and monitor pitch correction with no problems....
Luna was and is free.....
I do everything to do with routing inside LUNA I don't have to use an external software mixer....
The sound is glorious...
Now I am not saying this is for everyone... because everyone's needs are vastly different....but it's great for me...
cheers

Hey John, remind me where you landed on the BLA Revolution box - it was the lack of output gain that was the issue? Or was it something else? I recall you liked the sound. I ask because I am about to try a new setup built around an M3 MacBook Pro and my Revolution. The UAD native offerings are now extensive enough that I think I can try working with those only (though I know I will miss the Fatso and the 33609). I am even debating tracking through those, kind of simulating what I currently do in the Apollo's (I've never done this before, so that could be a total latency shit show). I debated upgrading to a new Apollo X but man, I really really like my BLA modded Apollos. My only issue is the clearly out of date ports and the fact that they are like 12 years old - I am a little worried they are due to quit on me soon. Anyway, if you liked the Revolution, I suspect you will indeed like a BLA modded Apollo, even if it doesn't add anything to the resale value. I like mine so much I don't want to give them up for a new Apollo and decided to party like it's 2011 until they give out. Hoping the Revolution solution works as either my fallback or change of direction. Yeah - it sounded fantastic...just not loud enough and not enough IO So, where are you now with the whole saga...been away for a couple of days cheers Wiz
