So - yeah - I think the 286 is a little cleaner/open than the CA-70? That sound right? I'm hesitant to post the song I just finished because I went a little too dark and then had to compensate...and I'm fighting some 2-3khz pinch with the mic...so, I don't want to give the wrong impression of the mic pre because of my shitty engineering skills. lol. I'll do some vocal files on each, though and post up. You are correct - the 286 has the sheen one would expect from the EF86s. If you're feeling a bit shy/neurotic/underwhelmed about your song we could post up some multi-track drums or piano we tracked a few weeks ago. Was gonna try to save that for another thread but we can toss a little sample of it up here if you want. Don't know if you know this but John has a killer voice and a great song writer Even his bad vocals are great lol

Sometimes the whole wedding cake looks (sounds) more exciting than just the piece you get on a plate. Scientists have discovered the one food that destroys a woman's sex drive: Wedding cake. Or a metal band on her finger left hand especially if it sparkles stops women sex drive almost imediately

It's strange how often I hear I want that "Tube sound" when come to find out what the sound there wanting came from API , Neve ,etc no tubes I Think this a very common misconception Very good points Joseph and Emmr

40ish transistors per EQ module too. It was suggested elsewhere this is not the entire EQ circuit either. View AttachmentI almost bought a pair of the Eq's but there was to much unknown for the price . These consoles always grab my attention but I couldn't tell you why lol probably because of the recordings done on them but if you think about it most of those records would have been great recorded thru any console Also never heard anyone who owned one say anything bad about the sound of them just the heat factor a lot of them caught fire ]Well anyway seems to make good conversation

So are you all saying the jj6386 sound as good as nos ? I ran the 3 tubes in mine for a while and thought it had a little pronounced mid honk and just maybe a bit grainy (or at least not as smooth as the 6386 only

quote from Skibbie owner of sly's console skibbie's clone on the left original on the right Hello everyone! Just thought I'd chime in, give a little background and clarify some things… I originally made the 736 as a 500 series preamp for Jamie Hince from the Kills. He wanted some pre's to take back to England to do demo work with... something that sounded like my Sly console. I had already remade the opamps for spares , and I had the trannies remade for another Flick restoration that I was doing at the time (someone had removed all the iron in the 80’s! Go figure!! ). So it was kind of a natural evolution into a production run. The op amp in the pre is the 535-7, a small daughter board mounted amp found in most Flickinger consoles. Its topology is very very similar to the 535-5. The 535-5 is built on a larger card and designed to mount under the meter bridge of the desk. It is a very fast op amp, especially for its age.. Great for preamps for sure, but it lacks unity gain stability...it can be slowed down for buffer amps etc, but it loses some of its punch... so in the console it is run with gain and then padded back down! This is not right of course, but it sounds super fantastic!! and like Larry said.. It is amazing on drums! The amp itself is similar to a spectra 101 in that it uses some of the same transistors, but it is a unique design... 3566 matched input pair and 4036, 2102 output pair! 8 transistors total… I know that it is nothing like an API and it doesn't really sound like one either... The sound is really dense and not nearly as manicured as the 2520... more 1073 like if anything... As for transformers... most of the original Flick gear used custom UTRAD transformers. The PFUNK console used Jensens on the input of the mic pre, as it was built after the company was gone (the remaining employees couldn't get the utrads!). I had the original transformers remade from a total teardown of samples from my console and from original specs that Triad dug out of their archives for me (as you may know…Triad acquired UTRAD in the 80's). It was a long process, and we went through several proto stages to get it right… If anyone has any questions. Please feel free to ask... I’m making this gear cause I love the sound of it and I use it every day… and yes I’ve been speaking to Dan Flickinger! -Bill Skibbe on the left is our 535-7 and an original on the right.. oddly enough we've found most amp failures in the originals to be caused by carbon comp resistor drift! Does that big red clearly all analog thing with the coiled cord on the right come with it? Connects you directly to the in-house service technition who's standing by ready to replace blown caps. Then you can play Tetris game till he fixes it lol

So far I've never felt the need for any cloud filter type device, and I'm still quite skeptical of the measurements panning out any better. I run the Samar into anything from modern transformerless to 1930's RCA, and I never add treble. I'm with emrr on this the mf 65 Samar has never needed added treble It has a very very very nice too end . I've used it to recored an entire album every instrument this wont work on every cd but the Samar gets used every session somewhere
