Ok, so today I had some time to kill and thought I’d swap the tubes in my 2bus vari-mu. I got it second hand a year or so ago and it had the previous owners tubes in it, not sure how long they had been there, but I ordered a quad of 6N1P-ew and a pair of diods for rectifiers from tube doctor at the time but didn’t get around to swap until today. First of all I had to zero the meters quite a bit, went all to the right with new tubes, the sound became better, smoother and bolder i’d say. But what hit me was that the compression became waaaay more subtle. I didn’t use to be able to do more than 1-2 steps down on t-hold and cranking the input gain just some made the comp a grabber. Now I can max out input and t-hold and it will still sound like a song. So I usually do 1-2db gr. Now that amount kinda sounds like less compression than before, or is it just that much smoother… i’m kinda confused… but maybe in a positive way. Just wondering could someone explain what’s going who knows more than I. Was it so that the old tubes where really worn? Or can the values just have so much effect on it?[/quote Manley has a lot of info on their site regarding the Vari-Mu. Did you check out their site? www.manley.com/tech-pages/variable-mu-identificationI sent mine to Manley and I would have to take it out of my desk to see what I have in mine. I guess first you need to know what version you have by looking at the serial number. I’m not sure what Manley put in mine. It’s easier to just email them to ask because taking it out of my desk is a real chore, but I will if you want me to tell you what I’m using. I haven’t experimented with tubes in my Vari-Mu, I left it up to Manley and they replaced several pieces and sent everything they replaced in a ziplock.

Does anyone know if plug-in alliance is compatible on M1 silicon yet? Still waiting for my free voucher to work on AAX. I haven’t checked in a while

It would be really cool to have a Carbon/Protools thread on going

The only downside is when using the preamps you can’t insert analog hardware. You have to change the inputs to mic or line. I’m not a huge fan of plugins and this seems to be AVID’s answer to a better UAD interface. A sort of compromised HDX system, however you can insert hardware via the db25. I use it for analog outboard subgroup processing, no latency at all. I noticed it right away when tracking drums. The Carbon is a very nice box. I really like mine. I can’t really say anything on the MTRX. I have read articles about it and that going full out HDX which is out of my budget. If I had the budget I would’ve went full HDX, but with the I/O required, now I’m really way out of budget

I tried Luna again last night, and it definitely does have a sound. I do use Logic X, Protools, and Studio One Professional depending on certain projects and although I like all the DAW’s. Luna is definitely something pretty cool, however I need a bigger monitor with that mixing view.

Maybe we can reach out to Toontrack and ask them about having an option by just clicking a box and getting rid of the ambience on the kit or drum of choice in the kit, that would be a nice option to have. Isn’t there a plugin that takes ambience or reverb away from the source? Curious if that would work, however seems like a lot of work. The original SD2 drum kits are really dry, very raw and real - they take EQ and ambience treatment very well - very mouldable. Then people started to buy cheap multi TB SSD's and it signaled in an era of multi-channel multi mic ambience SDX's. As ever not all progress is progress! That said I find I can get quite dry versions of Rooms of Hansa, Hit Maker, Decades and Legacy or Rock by just using the close miced channels and a touch of OH and then treat those as I wish. I updated to SD3 from SD2, so how do you get back to SD2? I noticed a big improvement in 3. Is it possible to download version 2? I’ll have to look in my account again, but I remember not having 2 for long because 3 came out and I went back to acoustic drums again because of the dynamics in 2 playing with a higher end E-kit, just didn’t care for it. Forgot the model of Roland e-kit, but it came with 3 cymbals and it was a 5 piece kit with.the better brain and bigger, better quality mesh pads. Roland had come out with a bunch of new kits at the time. It’s just easier to get the parts I want playing them than wasting hours trying to replicate the nuances of ghost strokes and things that happen with feel in the real world while playing an acoustic kit. It’s a good and fun click track for me when I want to goof off or write with guitar.

Yeah, but when they come out with the SHITS-FITS-ATOMIZER plugin and give you that cool video presentation, it will be $300 I’m thinking! 🤔 😆
Yeah, really wanted to go Satellite for years, but held off because why buy a computer when I had a computer and an Apollo Octo(2 Apollos Quad cores) to run plugins! I’m going to let my Waves expire this year as well! Bye bye Waves! I wish you could just sell plugins and not WUP the shit out of us! 👋🏻 I think I’m going anti-audio companies this year. Going back to analog, tired of all the digital bs! Apple 🖕🏻

Can’t you just turn off the ambience altogether? Not in all SDX expansions? Joe Baressi Evil Drums for SDX! I really dig these kits! I haven’t really spent a lot of time with SC Studio plug yet, getting around to putting it through its spaces or would that be paces? The stock drums were recorded in what sounds like a cathedral, so you can turn off the room mics, but even the close mics have this long reverb tail to them. You can shape the envelope to try and mitigate it but it’s a hassle and doesn’t sound that natural if you do it enough to kill the cathedral tails. I’ll have to go through them and see. I use it for a glorified click track when I’m writing with guitar, then just drop it out and play acoustic drums for the part

I logged on yesterday and my plugins were there and everything just worked. Not sure why it just didn’t work right away? Anyway, it all works and I was able to use LUNA and tracked some stuff to test it. Worked great and sounds really good on M1👍🏻 Glad to hear you're enjoying LUNA. Thanks for taking the time. We're thrilled with the response to LUNA open, and are seeing a HUGE influx of new users. That’s good, I’m just waiting for the new UA converters to hit the market, and curious about the “no latency inserts” for outboard gear. I’m waiting to see what UA does and also waiting to see what happens with Avid, before making any decisions on what direction to go in the future.

I put in a ticket and within 24 hours I rebooted my Mac M1 and it worked, evidently it was on UA’s side, then all of my UA plugs didn’t even show up. I put in another ticket. What a pain, never had issues like this before, however I managed to authorize and install plugs. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to resolve all this I logged on yesterday and my plugins were there and everything just worked. Not sure why it just didn’t work right away? Came back to UA for a hot minute, and still trying to get UA Connect to work. I followed all steps meticulously and it just locks up and nothing works. I put in a ticket. Hopefully, this isn’t a new direction UA is taking, nothing works? Since I still have a UA interface lying around I thought I would see if it’s any better, seems to have gotten worse. I know their customer support has taken a huge hit Are you on PC? I put in ticket and within 24 hours I rebooted my Mac M1 and it worked

Maybe try to clean it yourself first. Simple job. Just get a can of deoxit D5. Unless the resistive element is bad, it's a two minute fix. It looks to be a completely closed pot, not sure that will help. Thanks

I have a pcm91 that has a scratchy input gain knob, it’s annoying to the point that I need it repaired.

Cool stuff, now I just need to understand UAD’s native plug-in approach. I don’t want to get into a subscription. Can you buy a native UAD plug-in and use it on your Protools rig without the subscription?
