Great tube mics and great tube pres are awesome together. I think where that tube on tube thing got started was with low end versions of both. Cheap tube mics sound grainy as do the pres. And pairing them gives you a double dose of nasty.
Never fear with either the Mk 47 or the power strip. Both stellar tools that sound the way they're supposed to.

He was an artist as well as an artisan. I am blessed to own one of his guitars. It gives me great pleasure. His time on earth was well spent. Thank you, sir. RIP

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure all creatives are tormented. How could we not be? We are given the task of examining the human condition under a microscope. That's an ugly business.
It might even be true that the greater the creative, the more the torment. Insert any name you wish here. Hemingway comes to mind for me.
No one on this site is alone in these feelings. We ALL have them.
I've often wished that I had been born without the need to create art. Those that are born without this need are the lucky ones in my estimation.

I thought Lift Kit/UpInIt was the best lyric line in "Cruise". That was one crappy truck in the Chris Lane video. No lift kit there. I did like the guitar solo. I was thinking the same thing, Don. The guitars in that track are tops. Too bad the song is unlistenable because of the crappy lyrics. Hell I'd like to see Nashville release some instrumentals. The music these days is as good or better than it's ever been. Content is absolutely embarrassing. Serious question here... Do these new artists today have no shame or self respect? Or is it that this whole iPhone generation is so desensitized to human interaction that they are honestly clueless to the fact that this type of lyricism sucks? Are we doomed from heretofore?

I saw somewhere else where he said he was leaving the country because America was too racist.
Errm..were waiting.

I use L1 more than the others. Never on the buss though. Use L1 a lot on tracks that I want to fatten up. Even use it on vocals at the end the strip sometimes.

just make sure you take pics of the innards if you get your hands on it! I hope there's nothing in it but a straight wire.

Wasn't there a Chop Shop going around for demo earlier in the year? If so, who's got it? I'd like to have a go.

Doing better Keymod, thanks for asking. Still miss my friend everyday. Always will I guess, but some of the sting is gone. The worst part about it for me was I had to try and be strong and supportive for so many people, when in truth, I was the one who probably felt the weakest. Your all's kind words meant a lot to me. Thank you, guys. Mean that.

This is all good info. Keep going when you get time. There's quite a few tech heads on here that will dig in to theory talk like this. And send me one of your amps to try so I can be sure it's in line with your theory, Scott

One of my biggest mistakes has been thinking I can EQ my way to anything. I need to spend more picking the right the original source and less trying to EQ the wrong one. Great point.

Reverb. I always struggle to get the reverb sounds that I'm looking for and the amounts that I want. This... I can sit for hoursgoing through different reverbs and even them im still not sure if its right Reverb is tricky. A lot of times we are adjusting amounts of it when we should be adjusting eq of it. Lest we forget that reverb itself is a voice in a mix. Would we simply add any other voice to a mix without considering the eq? Nope, but we do it with reverb all the time. And delay and any other effect we choose, I'm still guilty of it because I'm lazy. And I know better.

I've only tried the free one. Ipedrum hit the nail on the head I think. It sounds good on most things I've tried in moderation. Really good, but doesn't have the same smoothness as the hardware when pushed. It's defiantly got a sweet spot.
Now here's something even this free one beats hardware on... BASS!! Knocks a di bass out of the park. Crank the hell out of it and the distortion is niiiiice.
Sta sounds good on bass too but can't get as much distortion.

I'm thrilled with the RTZ's. Easily the best sounding pre I've used. It's like a hi fi Neve. A sound all it's own. If you dime the output it's very clean. I run it like this a lot for vocals. Backing it off about half and cranking the input is great too for certain things. I would imagine that would be nice on a buss. I'm still itching to try a Pueblo Audio pre. Supposingly pristine and polished. Maybe demo a pair of those too Swurve? Cowboy, would you please elaborate on the differences between the RTZ's and your Heritage DMA73? I'm especially interested in the differences on female vocals and DI bass. The others I'd be curious about are the NPNG and the Awtac, if anyone has any comparisons? Les, The Heritage sounds more like a real Neve. Closest I've heard. It adds some heft of its own but can seem boomy. The RTZ sounds pristine all the way across the spectrum. It translates perfectly what is in front of it. Paired with a great mic, it's quite stunning the realism it has. Then add the 1073ish sizzle to that and you've got an RTZ. I too would like to hear the NPNG. I'm into stunning realism. But uber clean press Ive used in the past have left me a bit wanting. That's why this RTZ is right for me. Realism with just the right character. Try one and see fellas. You won't be disappointed.

If I'm not badly mistaken, that spike of activity on the Gearslutz chart in 2011 was probably due to the Apollo release.

Wow. That article is awesome. I was sad to see it's 4 years old. Looks to me like GS has grown to over 200,000 members now. Of course, they still count all the ones that have left too. This will put it in proper perspective: They have 10,000 people online at one time. We have 30...maybe. I would love to see this forum grow. I'm not sure how to do that and keep the tone the same - maybe I'm naive to think that we can - but I do. I think it's about accountability and respect...and making sure opinions aren't bought and sold. I bet you'd grow the forum with an AD in Tape Op . Yeah. I'd imagine that would be a good place to advertise. I subscribe to Tape Op. Bet a lot of others here do too.

I'm demoing the EH Holy Grail right now. Meh...I'm thinking the problem with these things is partly due to the signal being on the front end. I mean it adds something kind of nice but doesn't at all sound real of coarse.
Anybody tried the Wampler Faux Spring?
