Let us know what you find --- I've been using vp28 pair and sb4001 as plugins in cubase 6.

Here's my assumptions when reading tapeOp and SOS reviews:
-they're only reviewing products that they think are at least decent for the money. -unless they're absolutely raving about a product, it's probably just average. -they're probably failing to mention some important negative qualities of the product.
It kills me when they say things like "Cons: none, considering the price" ... which is total nonsense.

Pretty sure I set mine at 10 -- there was a pretty big difference between 9 and 10.

well i completed the mod tonight on both mics. i paused after the first to record against the second and a clone u87. the modded c3 definitely sounds a bit more subdued in the highs than the stock c3, maybe a bit smoother. it doesn't touch the u87. i would say not even close. the bass response isn't there. doesn't have that vintage grainy neumann sound. woulda probably saved my $120 bucks and just sold the mics. oh well, it was a good learning experience and maybe i'll find a use for them somewhere. Did you dial in the high end with the adjustable pot? When I did the C1, I rolled off a little more highs than the instructions recommended. It held up nicely to a diy u87 clone I compared it to, and was not shy with bass response. Though I'm not familiar with the differences between the C1 and C3, so that could certainly be a factor.

I was thinking about warm vs diy and I'll probably go with warm for the extra frequencies and stepped pots.

Just because she spells her name Brooklyhn, she's not getting my vote. What is that crap. Aaaaah you beat me to it.

Voted for Bryson.
Although Brooklyhn's song is catchy and she deserves credit for pushing the limits of how many consecutive consonants you can have in a name.

I did the C1 mod -- huge improvement! It was my uncle's mic and he hadn't used it in years because of the harsh top end, and now it's back in his regular rotation.

I use Trigger, usually anywhere from 10% mix to 70% to supplement kick/snare and maybe toms. Very easy to use.... I don't like most of the samples, but there are enough good ones to get the sound I want. My experience is with rock/pop/folk/metal... (although I haven't tried using it on blast beat stuff).

seems like it could be cheap and fun and maybe usable.... cheers Wiz By the way, I'm sure these are more than usable -- I own most of the mparts capsules and some of their kits, and I've been very impressed with everything.

I believe it's the same thing Microphone-parts have been offering for a while now.... DIYRE probably has a bigger reach, so this seems like a good move. Microphone parts is getting ready to launch some tube mic clones, so maybe they'll be available on DIYRE as well. microphone-parts.com/microphones/RA-23/

I've been doing google play music... similar selection to spotify, but you can upload your own music as well. They also pay artists about 10x as much.

I just switched to a single 32 inch monitor almost 4 feet from my face. Standard 1080p resolution. It seems to be a good balance between resolution and distance. I definitely wouldn't want a higher resolution from that distance unless the monitor was way bigger than 32 inches.

I saw inside, 3 discrete Opamps, red dots at that...... I'd say that's where the kick ass is coming from right there. I can imagine 1176 style, but with minimal grainy audio and that beautiful forward mid-range we love. If that's the case I could see these babies being amazing for vocals. I'm ready to build one! ehhh, give up the goods bro! where did you see the inside? Check the other DIY thread.... there's a facebook link.

Shameless plug for Unity Audio Rock monitors, which also have a ribbon tweeter. I'll let mine go for $1600 w/shipping included. If you don't like em, you can send them back to me. They're in the classifieds, or PM me for more details.

Nice -- glad he kept the general pultec look/colors. I wonder if the boost/cut knobs are fully variable or detented. Love the additional frequencies too.

Pad is probably around -20 db and line would be closer to -40db, so not the same. Pad would be too hot.

There's a tapeop review of the sigma (500 series summing box) which briefly discusses using the Lolas in this way: www.tapeop.com/reviews/gear/102/sigma-500-summing-box-500-series-frame/Personally, having compared to neve style preamps, I don't think the lola's are that similar to neve flavor when using the 990 opamps. If that's what you're after though, they get a lot closer to the neve sound IMO if you use the BA512 opamps. Sounds clips are pretty revealing: www.hairballaudio.com/elements/samplesVP28's would definitely be easier to use on 2buss since they're fully switched, whereas the lola's have switched gain and non switched attenuator. I'm planning on trying it out whenever I get around to building my second lola in the next few weeks. I'm guessing I'll still prefer the sound of the vp28 on 2buss and use Lolas for other buss duties.

Yeah if I had a fathead I would have probably already pulled the trigger. I think Warren/zenpro is still doing the basic version for $99.

Microphone Parts just came out with a mod kit for the cascade fatheads. It replaces the motor/ribbon and transformer with Samar parts: "Our FHX ribbon motor and toroidal transformer were designed and are manufactured in the US by Samar Audio Design, recognized experts in ribbon microphone technology." microphone-parts.com/mod-kits/fathead-mods/Price is $389 ..... which is above my personal 'instant purchase' threshold, but very curious about this.

With CDMA carriers (sprint/verizon) you can report a phone lost/stolen which will disable the phone on their network. It might be different with ATT since they have SIM cards, but definitely make sure it's fully functional before you pay for it.

How badly did you break it? Replacing the screen is a piece of cake, and costs <$50 for parts. If you don't want to do it yourself, I'm sure you can find a local shop to repair it for around $100.
