I think that it's in the best financial interest of sites like Recording Revolution as well as gear magazines and gear manufacturers to perpetuate the concept that anyone can make 'hit records' with inexpensive gear. Most companies sell a boatload more low end gear than high end, and buying low end gear can be a 'gateway drug' to buying the more expensive stuff (ask me how I know). And of course what's good for the manufacturers is good for ad revenue in magazines/websites....
It is true that great records can be made with cheap gear, but it sure is easier with the nice stuff.

I'm in the same boat -- still on 6, but I plan on upgrading as soon as I wrap up a couple a projects...
The upgrade price from 5 to 8 is $300, and beyond that, there's no discount. So probably a good time to go ahead and do it and save some money while there's still a significant discount.

Been meaning to update this thread for a while in case anyone was interested in seeing the final logo design. Big thanks to yotonic for his guidance and for putting me in touch with Luna Digital, who I highly recommend if anyone needs logos/illustrations. (The cost was extremely reasonable too.)

+1 on Hakko.... I've been using some of the same tips for close to 10 years. I use the FX-888 and the 808 for desoldering. I also recommend the panavise 350. I solder pretty much everything at 740F.

Also, it's recommended to use distilled water or boil the water in advance to kill any possible brain eating amoebas (especially if you live in Louisiana, which is where two people died from this). Thank God for Klonopin..... before the doc put me on that stuff your little statement about brain eating critters would had sent me into a freaking frenzy. Haha.... only two documented cases out of millions of people using them, but still... not worth the risk IMO. I'll be boiling mine.

Rid your mixes of slice and zing by,... D-essing into your effects! Good tip! Reminds me of those old Ginsu knife infomercials.

My problem with neti pots is that I continue to leak fluid for 1-2 hours afterwards, which is pretty annoying. But I do use this neti pot alternative: www.amazon.com/NeilMed-Sinus-Rinse-Premixed-Sachets/dp/B000A0S5KCIt's a lot easier to use than the usual neti pot IMO. Also, it's recommended to use distilled water or boil the water in advance to kill any possible brain eating amoebas (especially if you live in Louisiana, which is where two people died from this).

Aaah yeah, the other reason I haven't upgraded. There used to just be the one version for $200... pretty steep price jump to get the advanced version for $600.
Good to know about the improved sound. I have some mastering projects coming up, so I'll have to revisit this if I'm not getting the results I want from FG-X / UAD / Ozone 4.

Looks nice... dynamic eq could be cool. I'm still on Ozone 4 -- tempted to upgrade just to get rid of the old green on black color scheme. Looks like winamp from 1998.

If you're considering NC, The Triangle area might be worth considering (Chapel Hill / Durham / Raleigh), Durham having the best real estate prices.

Not a movie but I think most people here would really enjoy the second episode of Black Mirror, "Fifteen Million Merits". Each episode is a diff cast/setting so no need to watch the first one before. Awesome bit of social commentary.+1 +1 ... been watching this recently on Netflix streaming. Also, if you like the 'The Raid' , you should check out the first movie from that team.... 'Merantau'. Same director and lead actor as the Raid.

On windows you just hit the 'insert' key by default. But if that's not an option on mac, you should be able to set it to whatever key you want in the 'key commands' menu.

I've primarily used Cubase since sx3, but I recently did some mixes in Studio One v2 (collaborating with another studio), and found it to be a very easy transition. In general it seemed to be lacking some non essential features, but was maybe a little easier to use/learn. Having a separate view for all automation was very cool. Integrated Melodyne was also cool.
I'm sticking with Cubase for now, mainly for familiarity, but I could easily switch to Studio One and not sweat it in the least. (Also have PT11/Reaper for importing projects as needed).

Minus 2 here last night --- the pipes coming out of the well pump froze... broke out the space heater and extension cords and had water flowing in an hour or so, then added more insulation to the pipes.
I don't remember it ever being in the negative numbers in NC.

They have a lot of interesting looking stuff with some extremely reasonably priced units and some mid-high end looking stuff. Just can't get over that name.....

Thanks for the heads up -- been looking forward to this since I've found 1.0 to be intermittently buggy/noisy (which hasn't stopped me from using it on every project).

Ok, I got a chance to do some quick A/B comparison between the hardware and the plug. I have to say that the plug is extremely close, closer than I thought it would be. Thanks -- makes me feel a little less horrible about selling my hardware unit. People on the purple site seem to be saying the same regarding the high frequencies.
