Sounds great to me. Do you still normally track with a Retro STA Level in the path after your pre-amp? Haven’t had a sta-level in a while. Man, me and my avatar are always the last to know. That pic is what, 3Stas ago? What, if anything, are you using instead? Cheers, Geoff

Just read that Heritage is going through hard times too. A few people let go last week and some left in solidarity. On top of layoffs either last year or earlier this year.
Despite being only only a few hours down the highway from Kalamazoo theyre pretty rare around here. The couple I’ve played were excellent.

Honestly, if I want a serious Gibson style acoustic these days I’d have to go vintage, or get one made by a builder. I can’t remember the last time I played a new Gibson acoustic and thought it was good. Most of them have been out right turds. With any luck the guys in the mando division and the few that are capable of building nice acoustics will start their own company. John Walker and Kevin Kopp are still out there. Not sure where REN Ferguson has ended up. He got poached by Fender a few years back but that didn’t last. These guys are all builders from the custom shop in Montana. Have heard differing opinions about the quality of current Gibson’s, but hope they can get their act together under new management. Henry might have been good for the company three decades ago, but recently? He’s a nutter. Cheers, Geoff

Ad in follow up to the worst pun ever... John, why do you have a $4000 mic? Because you have been keeping it warm for me. I'll swap you an SM7 in fantastic condition and throw in something else if you like! To me, the SM7 is a dull, lifeless, hipster-ish, cliched, over-hyped, cool-factor, sterile, hit-or-miss, emperor's new clothes kind of microphone. And there's a down side too Well, yeah. They do seem to be everywhere these days. And, at least on vocals, yeah they don’t always work. But what does? Still the best mic I’ve tried on my crappy voice, but also some folks who can sing. Also a fave on guitar cabs. But pulling a 57 a couple or three inches back? Often it can get pretty close. Cheers, Geoff

Then compress the hell out of it. Done. Both the DI and the amp? what type of comp(s)? Do you ever run them in series? Do you prefer higher ratios/ limiting or lower ratios? I suppose that probably depends on what you have to work with, but what are your go tos? Cheers, Geoff

I got mine in the mid90s. I got it because Re20s were all the rage and I wanted something different. How’d that go?
Still the mic I like best on my voice, although I haven’t tried any of the big time famous ones. I like it on guitar cabs, and given that I had limited mic’s back then it probably got used on bass cabs, toms, kick etc. Everybody survived.

Very nice.
I was in that room in I wanna say 87? IIRC they had a 12 track Otari digital? recorder in there at the time. I didn’t record anything, just walked around. Still have and wear the t-shirt I bought there.
Glad you got to add to the great music that’s been recorded in that room.

I feel like anything Ryan Freeland does is pretty much amazing. The new Joe Henry record was done live takes to 2 track tape. I can’t think of many people that would have the balls to do that these days other than Joe and Ryan. I can’t find that vid, but I did find a bunch of Rose stuff from that album. Had no idea Joe produced or that it was done here. I’ve been a Joe Henry fan for about 25 years now and love his production as much as his solo stuff. I’ve certainly suggested his production as being amongst the best sonically in the past here. The song Slide in particular. Wish I could find a vid of Richard Prior. Amazing. Didntknow he had a new one - kinda passed on the Billy Bragg Collabo. Will have to check out the new one. Live to 2 track should be awesome. Cheers, Geoff

Sparklehorse is so good. Those are some records that definitely have a signature sound. I'm sure it has less to do with the flickengers...What a great talent. I'd love to read more about those recordings. His records are high art. The sonic palette makes me have synesthesia. some records are hyper-realistic snapshots of the best possible version of everything being played. Then there are records like kid a, it's a wonderful life, the downward spiral, sgt pepper, loveless, a soft bulletin, etc, that just are their own entire universe. they take you there and wrap their arms around your mind. Yeah, Mark definitely had his own thing going. He is sadly missed. Cheers, Geoff

Mark Linkous died. I don't remember the cause, but it was way too early. Suicide.

A recent post mentioned the Skibbe 500 series près that are based on a Flickinger console. That got me digging out my Sparklehorse cds, and posting here.
So any info about these is welcome. Anybody here ever work on one? Know if the one in Michigan ever sold (there is a thread here which does mentions it's for sale and a bit of Flickinger info), and what happened to Mark Linkous's? Are there any others still in one piece?
And mostly what made them special. For what is sometimes called the best sounding console ever there isn't that much info about them out there.

Looking forward to hearing what you think. Looks like they kept some of the quirks, like the single coil pickups, but didn't slavishly copy every feature. More like a modern update. I think I want one. cheers, Geoff

Shitty.
Sharon was fierce. Energy off the charts. Hard to believe someone with that much energy could be taken down. Cancer sucks.
some of the best shows I ever saw. I was at the premiere of her movie when she announced she had cancer and that it had returned. Thought she'd beat it again. I'm sure she was a fighter to the end.

geoff, I had the THD Bi-Valve for years, both the 15 and 30 watt models. I had THD's 2 X 12" cabinet and a Matchless 1 X 12" cabinet. On paper it seems brilliant, changing tubes was easy, but i really sounded much too nasal, and nothing could get rid of it. I will say it does impart its own thing. El34s are more Brit sounding than a 6l6, for example, but neither sounds like a clone of a Marshall or Fender regardless of the cab used, imo. Just goes to show the circuit is probably more important than whatever tube is used. I think I like how it's voiced more than Martin did because I still have mine. Cheers, Geoff

OK, this has been fun. I'd like to know if you could only have ONE amp, what would it be? My choice, the Lois Electric Colombia, the best "Febder" sound I've ever hear, and a pedal would get some grit if needed. THD Bivalve with a stock of Nos tubes and a bunch of different cabinets. Thats kind of cheating though. Maybe an Ac15, maybe a Marshall, maybe a blackface Fender, maybe a Valco. Would depend on the type of stuff the studio was mainly doing. Just for personal use? Probably a Swart. Cheers, Geoff

I liked the newest one best based on one listen to each on earbuds on an iPod. In order. So, grain of salt. Plus had already read the comments before I listened.
I still think the the lead vocal is getting lost a bit when the brass is blaring, but there's some nice sounds in there, and nice sense of space. I tend to default to a pre delay of 30 msec give or take on lead vox, but recently saw a thing on CLA where he's using waaaaay more pre delay. IIRC something like 120 or 150. Maybe more. Remind me next time I have a busy mix to give that a try.
Fun tune, good playing.
FWIW I preferred A to B but liked the low end on B more. No idea which was itb vs otb.
Cheers, Geoff
