Aaaaand. I have now gone a full month without buying a plugin. I may have finally kicked my plugin purchase compulsion to the curb. Although I did pick up a piano library. And I keep checking to see who has sales, so I may not be completely cured.
And yes, that faint tapping sound you are hearing is me patting myself on the back.

PA is I believe still running their seemingly neverending bundle deal.
Kiive has a spring sale.
I’m sure there are others. Many, many others.

File this one in "low end". I pulled at 166XS out of my live mix rack for a couple extra channels of tracking some spare parts tracks and was pretty surprised at how it sounded. Honestly, it behaved identically to the 160X that I use routinely on bass and for parallel duties. It's not like the 160x is expensive, but 166XS is routinely sold for $50/channel which is like buying a couple decent beers around these parts. I pretty much never use anything other than Overeasy and Auto release for 160x... this feels like a rare hidden gem in this day and age of "so much information that nothing good is cheap for long." Anyone disagree? This is an opinion based on an EXTREMELY limited sample size (one track in one session). The 166 was the go to affordable live comp till digital consoles took over. Funny how it was loved up until the cheaper and crappier 266 came along. The one thing a 166 kills the Composer on is as a stereo comp. The 166 uses both ch detectors in stereo the composer only the left, so if you notice it’s not catching peaks it’s not if they are on the right or hotter on the right. I have a 266 sitting in a box somewhere. It is kinda craptacular. Cheers, Geoff

I do like me some Daking gear. Wish I could afford more but for my needs I consider myself fortunate to have what I have.

I’m not sure it’s the selling stuff. It’s the buying it again and the rinse and repeat that sometimes makes me chuckle. But it is a good way to test out stuff and see if it works in your space and for your workflow. If you can afford to take a hit on stuff sometimes as you say. Cheers, Geoff I don’t think I do it any more than anyone else. I’m just not scared to say I bought something, got bored and sold it. Two years later I get bored and want that sound again. I don’t know why everybody gets so sanctimonious (not accusing you)…its just a lazy take when people jab me about it. It doesn’t really bother me as much as it makes me roll my eyes. I guess we all have different ways of going about this stuff. I research stuff, buy or not, and tend to hold. But I’m also not making my living off this and also admit to being somewhat allergic to taking a bath on a piece of gear. It would be fun to try out more stuff though! Cheers, Geoff

You know, I take the hit for selling stuff…but I’m in the large majority. I’m not sure it’s the selling stuff. It’s the buying it again and the rinse and repeat that sometimes makes me chuckle. Iron age audio? No personal experience and no idea what it would cost versus the Api. But the recent pics on here are drool worthy. If I were in the market I would at least give them a shout.

I had one die. Never moved, non smoking, etc. As I recall to get it replaced under warranty was almost as much in shipping (to Canada) as just buying a new one.Major pita. Wishing you luck.

Hmmm. Having recently bought 4318 plugins you might think I would have thought this through a bit more, but alas, not really.
I am pretty good for hardware compression, but mainly single channel, and mostly pretty clean, so a more vibey compresor, but still versatile. Let me think on that. Same deal with hardware eq. No stereo pairs. The stock Logic eq is ok for surgical cuts, but something with a bit more character. Api maybe? N style maybe. TDL Slick? Gives a bunch of flavours plus filters. Autotune. I need it. Nuff said. Saturation of some sort. Whether that means a tape sim, a transformer sim or a colour box of unknown topology? And lastly? I am not really sure. Phase alignment? Metering? A clipper?
I kinda suck at this. Good question!

Or even recorded one? Been in the same room as one? Know of modern ones that don’t suck?
I did talk to Lindley about his but can’t remember what he was playing and I wont get to have that conversation again, sadly.

Ok, had a quick look around and there is the Avedis/Pye, Pom and Pynamic, so at least three versions of the Pye out there.
Q2 seems to still be making the Compex.
Which leaves the Focusrite the lone member of my serious suggestions that does not appear to currently have a hardware clone.

I have spent a bit of time searching around for a cheap option, and most of them sound too good! I don’t think I am really going for super lofi or out of tune, but I’m also not sure I want to spend much on what is ultimately pretty niche. I m not really a keys player, so having to buy a bunch of good sounding ones to get an older upright thrown into the bundle probably isnt going to happen. Thanks for the suggestions to check out though.
Pianobook has what I think are mostly or maybe all free sample libraries, but so far the ones I have checked out haven’t quite been what I want. Mechanical noises that sound real, etc.
Cheers, Geoff
