I can't. I started as a musician but moved into recording when there weren't any studios around to record my bands.
I realized that I was a decent musician but I wasn't really great at being in a band because it was all about the creation, not about the final product. If we played a song more than a few times I got tired of it and wanted to do something new..
The recording stuff stuck though.

I’m lazy so Danny I’ll just say do you really want to learn another software and it’s idiosyncrasies? Just Upgrade the PT lic. Even then I will admit the IPod version of Cubase is a blast for stupid quick stuff. Yeah, so it seems Pro Tools still doesn't play nice with UA plugins (if you use a Satellite).. Although I'm not sure if I'd put that in the pro's or con's list, it would save me $800.00, a spare power slot and a connection to my machine so?! *Half raised face
I just need a decent room sim and vocal echo, Tokyo Dawn and all the shiny hardware is good for the rest. Apart from that it seems much improved and it would cost me $200.00 to get back into it.. Not baaad, not baaad.
Tbone81 , Cubar looks cool thanks for the description.
svart , tell me more.. I've heard a decent amount of groans in the wind about it being less than user friendly alongside having a very basic midi feature set. The wibbly web says it's lightning fast and crash free though which is cool. I've never understood the "less than user friendly" complaint. It literally has the same buttons and boxes that all other daws have. Sometimes they are in different places, sometimes called different things, but they're all there. I haven't used the midi stuff very much but I'm currently building a dedicated workstation that will have two keyboard controllers running midi and USB into Reaper. I'll report back on how it works.

Reaper. You can reskin it to look and feel how you want. Works just like any of the others but for cheaper. Their updates and bug fixes are second to none.

I have some real 1290 preamps, some AML clones and the Alctrons. While the GAP (and I assume the Alcron) sounds great, it doesn't have that "compressed high end" that I've heard on BAE and N72 samples. Would you say the AML has that quasi-compressed sound? I don't really drive mine very hard. I just like the fat bottom and sparkly top that neve style preamps give. Can't say I've noticed a compressed attitude from any of them.

Sometimes DIY is not the cheapest option. That's fantastic! Although I still need the rack for the 500 module. I've looked it up, and apparently is almost the same as GAP PRE73? That ALCTRON 73 pre with the eq is insane for $400! But if I don't care much for the EQ, I wounder wether the GAP Premier 73 is closer to the quintessensial Neve sound because it has Carnhill in and out transformers? That's $400 used, including shipping and tax. I don't mind taking a week carefully soldering a kit if it takes me closer to the BAE sound. I'll confess that I've spent far too many hours on Zen Pro Audio's clipalator comparing '73 clones, and although all sound great, there's something about the BAE that makes everything smoother; like I wouldn't want to make make any eq moves when mixing. I have the same gut feeling API 312, but it seems like vocals get a tad more aggressive. Either way, I've shortened my list to: * The Alctron with EQ $400* The GAP Premier w/no EQ (Carnhill Transformers) $400* A GAP Pre 73 Jr ($200) and then adding an output transformer from AML (should all be less than $300) * AML 1081 w/used 500 rack $404* The CAPI 312 with used 500 rack $417 (yes, API style, but if it sounds close to the 312, that's awesome) Do the kit ones have a sonic quality edge? On the Clipalator samples, I hear that the GAP Premier sounds awesome, but the BAE still has an edge "rounding" the overall tone. It's very subtle, but it's there. Would the AML 1081 get me closer to the BAE roundness than the GAP? Arggh! I wish there was a way to compare the kit ones before buying them. I have some real 1290 preamps, some AML clones and the Alctrons. They all sound like "neve" but with slightly different tonality. I'd say that any clone or original will never sound the same to each other. Even back in the day no two neve preamps sounded perfectly identical.. but then again nobody really listened that closely either. GAP is probably from the same company that does Alctron. I'd bet they're pretty similar. There's also this one: reverb.com/item/29201697-alctron-mp73x2-2-channel-dual-1073-microphone-preamp

Even cheap ear buds work better.

Greetings all! That jawbreaker title means "ear/nose/throat doctor." So back in early May I suffered a sudden loss of hearing above 7kHz in one ear, accompanied by tinnitus and pain. (It finally began to clear a couple of weeks ago, thank goodness.) In the meantime I've seen my primary physician, gotten referred to a local ENT, who in turn referred me to the "big guy" in the area (Philadelphia). That guy looked at my audiology test (10db down at 8kHz) and said "This is normal! Why are you here?" I had to explain to him why that top octave was important to me. So he looked me over and said "The good news is that you probably had shingles and this will clear by itself. The bad news is that if it doesn't I have nothing to offer you." My question for the community: does anyone know of an ENT doctor who specializes in musicians and audio engineers? Someone who'll take you seriously when your complaint has nothing to do with speech comprehension? Thanks in advance! I don't. I saw one decades ago and my experience was similar. Turns out that there's not a whole lot they can do if the inner ear is damaged through pressure/inflammation. Once the parts are scarred or the little "hairs" in the inner ear are damaged, they don't really grow back to normal. Sometimes if the damage isn't catastrophic the tinnitus will reduce as swelling/pressure go down and things heal but once tinnitus starts, it'll never go away fully. Having suffered with it over the years, the best thing to do is to try to keep your ENT tract from being inflammed. Antihistamines and anti-inflammatories are a must and should be done as soon as the tinnitus starts so that you can try to keep the pressure from building.

I had an Aphex 108. Dual compressor with the special VCAs in them. Super transparent. I might still have it in the closet too if anyone wants to buy it. I'm possibly interested, but... no threshold control? How does that work exactly? It just takes off whatever it thinks you need? Or is that the "Drive" knob? Yep, the drive knob essentially works like a threshold knob and ratio knob in one. The speed knob is like an auto attack and release in one. Output is just the makeup. I'll look and see if I still have it.

I really just don't see how I would need "more" from a speaker, however I can see not wanting to spend the money. To me I figured that if I got along with them, they'd be one of the last monitors I'd buy, and it's worth the stretch to not think about needing "more". What is more? What is technically correct? In terms of statistics / measurements the Genelec 83XX series beat the Neumann's, just look at ASR but they have a completely different presentation and sound nothing like each other. The Core 59's, PSI A-23M's and KH420's make the 310's sound rather muddy and boxy but that's an ignorance is bliss problem, there's absolutely nothing wrong with either the LYD 48's or KH310's. If you can't make great mixes on either it's not a monitor issue and I'd probably turn towards the room before I'd consider an upgrade.
That being said, I can't unhear what I've heard. This isn't a necessity thing and I'm going to quote mcirish here because he's bang on the money..
"The end result might not justify the price difference, though I'm sure I would enjoy them."
That's just the nature of pro audio though, wildly different opinions, needs, desires, budgets, etc. I totally agree that pretty much anything up at this level will satisfy the need for a great monitor. I'm just offering up my personal thoughts for others to consider, that's all. Sometimes less is more.

The more I've listened to these Neumann's the more I think I might go with those and send the Lyds back. It's not that I don't like the Lyds, but the KH310s just have a solidity to them that I enjoy, and that's at least due in part to the sealed cab. I'm really liking the tightness in the low end of the KH310 versus the Lyd. And the mids on the KH310 are real nice too. Interesting! It sounds like you wouldn’t really go wrong either way, which is always a relief. But your observations on the KH310s definitely mirror mine. I’ve never heard the LYDs, though. Mine as well. In my years of trial and error in audio I've become very leery of anything that is described as "exciting" or "extended" or pretty much any word that describes something having "more" than the peers. I've started to really appreciate the laid-back nature of a lot of higher end audio gear because the more buzzwords used on describing something, usually the harder it is to use. I've never heard the KH310s be described as "exciting", but I've definitely heard them be referred to as "laid-back" and I'm now OK with that. I've learned them pretty well and I have very few problems using them to get translating mixes. I really just don't see how I would need "more" from a speaker, however I can see not wanting to spend the money. To me I figured that if I got along with them, they'd be one of the last monitors I'd buy, and it's worth the stretch to not think about needing "more".

Aw come on guys Why is a singer's favorite warm up... "Me Me Me"? And why would there be SO many Lead Singer jokes. Maybe more than drummers! (Then again maybe not ) Chris P.S. I like my voice, but sometimes it doesn't like me. But I love "just singing" a whole lot more. I know hundreds of drummer jokes .... you know I've never heard a lead singer joke! Tell me your three best ones :-) What do you call a singer who breaks up with his girlfriend? Homeless! There were two people walking down the street. One was a singer in a band, the other person didn't have a job either. How many guitarist does it take to change a lightbulb? One, but the singer will tell him he's not doing it right. How do you know if a singer is at your door? They can't find the key and they never know when to come in.

Not sure what you mean. My PCM80 emulator sounds exactly like my PCM80 with the crunchy digital harshness and everything. The best part about the emulation is that it always works, unlike my PCM80 which decides to boot only about half the time now. Which PCM 80 IR are you using? I have a PCM 80 too, I'd be curious to test it out against the plug you're using. Two general areas that the plugs have never held up are width and especially in the tails. My point was I wouldn't assume a plugin/computer can match all that's going on in the Bricasti if it can't seem to do that with an old Lexicon PCM which would be much less powerful. A modified 224 setting in verbsuite. I took my PCM80 and tried to match the settings because the PCM80 uses the 224/XL algorithms. DSP chips have specific processing pipelines that can do certain functions much quicker than a general-purpose CPU can, but the speed of a modern CPU would absolutely demolish a 15-20 year old DSP design. A few specific-purpose DSP chips might work more efficiently on a single purpose, such as reverb, than a CPU that needs to compute everything for the DAW, the plugs, the video, the I/O, etc... But there's no comparison that a CPU doing a single purpose task would be much faster, just maybe not as efficient, and that efficiency is what can degrade quickly when the CPU has to handle so many other tasks. Anyway, it's not really a good comparison because they have fundamentally different purposes and therefor designs.

I mean considering the Bricasti is essentially software with DSP I would think modern computer's processor's would be able to dish out the same level of reverb even if it meant chaining plug-ins and using multiple ones in series. There isn't some integral analog element that would make the Bricasti inherently better sounding since both are digital emulations of reverb - (i think?) But I could be wrong. I guess I'll just have to demo one at some point maybe on Access Analog to understand what I may/may not be missing.
In theory yes, but I’ve shot out plug-in after plug-in and they can’t seem to beat even 1980s technology in reverbs??? Maybe the converters play a big part in the sound? I actually like going analog in/out even when a digital I/O is available. More vibe to me. The fact that plugins can’t nail this(at least to my ears) has been perplexing to say the least. Not sure what you mean. My PCM80 emulator sounds exactly like my PCM80 with the crunchy digital harshness and everything. The best part about the emulation is that it always works, unlike my PCM80 which decides to boot only about half the time now.

I don't use heat because I don't use protools. I do use tape emulators on busses to get a little of similar nonlinear distortion that heat adds.

Quint I’m not sure what mine are set at - I can check tomorrow. But I *think* I ended up leaving them flat. I was going to say a couple things before you lifted the top by +1: First, it sounds as though you may have found your speaker in the LYD48s, which would be awesome! Secondly, I was going to recommend something that I don’t hear many other people mention, but it’s helped me over the years. Since you’re able to continue trying both of these for awhile, and you’re suspicious about the Dynaudio “sound” being “normal” for you, I would recommend putting the Dyns away for a whole week. Stop comparing the speakers. Just put the KH310s up, and play them like crazy for the next week. Listen to them in the background when you’re doing other stuff. Listen to them intently, paying super close attention. Turn them up and listen to them casually from the other room. Play guitar for fun while listening to them. Get lost in some records you’ve haven’t listened to in a long time. Etc. Etc. Etc. Just listen to them constantly and see if over the course of a week, your ears begin to “re-normalize,” as it were. Then after a week, put the Dyns back up and see what happens. If you say, “whoa, these Dyns sound weird,” then you’ve got a contest on your hands. If, on the other hand, you say, “Ahhhhhhh, that feels better,” then put the Neumanns back in their boxes and send ’em back. Funny you mention that. I'm actually doing EXACTLY that. I've been listening to all kinds of shit on the 310s, and plan to continue doing so for the coming days. I want to get away from the Lyds for a while and see how the 310s treat me. My plan is to do this for the next week and see how I feel after that. I will say I'm noticing that, as I get further away from the sense memory of the Lyds or my current Dyns, I "might" be coming around to the 310s. I've also gone back to the flat setting on the 310s and think I prefer it to the +1dB treble setting. It just felt a little off kilter the more I listened to it, even if it sounded better at first. I DO think I prefer the bass on the 310s and I'm coming around to the rest of the frequency spectrum. I'm currently doing a little Blood Sugar Sex Magik and enjoying it. What input and output settings on the back do you have yours set at? I'm personally using the digital inputs on mine, so I'm not sure if the input gain does anything for me. I do have the output set for 100 to have it more in line with my other monitors when switching between them.

For those of you with kh310s, or who have at least used or tried them, to what degree did you adjust any of the eq settings on the back versus flat? I'm asking because, though I know Neumann recommends flat settings for studio environments, I've been messing around with the +1dB treble setting on the kh310s and been "maybe" getting better results. The jury is still out, but it's a little closer in the high end to what the Lyds do at a flat setting. Which then opens Pandora's box as far as what I might be able to achieve with either the Lyd OR kh310 if a Sonarworks/Trinnov/Dirac/etc. comes into play... I just checked mine and I have the tweeters set to +1 and the rest at 0. I turned the tweeters to +1 some time ago because I was always mixing a little too much high end in and my cymbals would be too crispy.

The curve is weird to me. You have to be at the focal point in the curve for it to be of any use, but most people sit too far back from them and the parallax is stranger than just using a flat monitor at that point.
That said, I recently bought a curved monitor to play video games and I really liked the curve for that purpose but the rest of the monitor kind of sucked so I returned it and stayed with my flat monitor. I guess I could take or leave a curved monitor at this point because it seems that the other attributes are more important to me.

Also...call me crazy but I swear the M7 library in Reverberate 3 sounds even better than Seventh Heaven! I have some old M7 IRs that supposedly came from the original M7 hardware. I've used them alongside the Slate Verbsuite M7 a few times and really couldn't tell much difference.

Go with what you know. If you like the dynaudio sound and it works for you, but you just need a little more of it, then go for the Lyds. Knowing what works is worth more than trying to find a unicorn. From how you describe the difficulty in identifying any major selling points between them, they're likely going to give you similar results in the long run. Of course, the downside is never really knowing if you're missing out on something because your ears have been used to the Dynaudio sound for so long it just sounds "normal". Yeah, that's what I'm trying to figure out right now. I'm trying to be brutally honest with myself and cut out as much bias as I can. If I had to pick at this very moment, I think I'd be going with the Lyds and maybe also one of those matching Dyn subs. Luckily I still have a few weeks before I need to send one or the other back, so I'm not done testing and may prefer the 310s at some point. More testing may reveal things that I'm not seeing yet. That's why I'm hoping to use the Neumann's long enough to sort of overcome the "normal" thing. have you done a mix of the same song through both monitors yet? Set one set up, come back the next day and start from scratch. Set the next monitors up and come back the next day and start from scratch. Do each mix cold so you're not biasing your ears. Take each mix and go somewhere else, like the car or work or somewhere out of your element and listen to each. You should hear pretty clear differences if one monitor or the other is coloring the sound too much. Or we can take a listen to the mixes and give feedback.
