...so here I recorded a VO comparison of the 3U Audio GZ47fet V, a custom-built Dany Bouchard D-M49b tube mic clone ($2K+) and the new Warbler MKIID...I decided to go sans (no) pop-filter to really capture the detail of these mics since they are somewhat similar, so you may hear the occasional burst of air... D-M49b (with Dany Bouchard's own m7-style D7 capsule) vs. 3U Audio GZ47fet V vs. Warbler MKIID: app.box.com/s/eyy0oklctq8bs3nwc75vtbkes55p06cewhat type of shock mounts are those??

i showed this track to a producer buddy of mine and he said the guitar 'chunks' overwhelm the vocals thru-out the tune. now when I listen to the song, all I can hear is how loud the guitar strumming is compared to everything else lol i think your laptop speakers are accentuating those frequencies? But come on, even you have to admit that sonically this is pretty damn good and Tony's point of DIY gear being used supports the idea that the diy gear hangs with commercial products and that Dan not only is a great resource to the diy community but has the engineering chops to back up his posts !

Only 2 I've ever had are Sony 7506's and ATH-50's. The Sony's are very tinny compared to the Audio Technicas. I mainly use the ATH-50's almost exclusively except tracking vocals with my AEA R84... Makes me like what is in the cans when singing with a darker mic like the AEA.

Great job Dan! Hi-fi for sure! Where a vocal sits seems to me is a personal preference. I personally like it to sit slightly out front just like a live show as I'm visualizing bandmembers on stage, outfront but still attached .

Seems one of the mics lack more bottom than the other...maybe a lil too pretty on top...perfect midrange. Lacks a lil depth for me but I could see using them in a pinch

Anyone using the UAD 1073 Unison thing? cowboycoalminer didn't you kind of like it? I had $125 of coupon left and the damn thing was $129 so I ponied up the four bucks. I've never gotten into the Unison thing because I use my own external pres but if it sounds decent, I could use it on the 4 Apollo preamps when doing drums. Thanks UAD. I picked up the Shadow Hills Mastering Comp and the 1073 for a grand total of $4. Regan those emulations sound pretty good. Good move on the Shadow Hills too. I think it's one of the best software comps out there. And this new Sta Level plugin. what Sta level plugin?

First raw sample with the CV3 sounds fantastic!!!!! The RS124 sounds like its melted with butter in a hot glowing room...again, fantastico. Johnkenn how do you compare the Sta to the RS124 and are you missing the Burl at all?

The only thing I liked 7506's for was to sing with them. I use the ATH M50's and lovem! The Sonys are harsh to me.

So, I may pick up a used Symphony 16x16 and sell my Apollo Quad Silverface, UA 4710-d, RM Superbeast and PCM4222. I will at least break even, if not come out a few dollars ahead. I will lose 8 preamps, quad DSP, unison pre's and the ability to track through UAD plugs. I still have an Octo Thunderbolt, and I never really printed any plugs on the way in. I'm trying to move toward more hardware anyways. I need a 16 channel front end. I was using the conversion on the 4-710d to get 8 more channels into the Apollo. I don't know how the conversion quality of the 4-710d stacks up in the world of converters. What do you guys think? I'll be losing some pre's and DSP, but won't fork over additional cash. Worth it? How did the 4-710 stack up to the 2 great converters you had???

My business mentor told me something a long time ago...OPM "always use "other peoples money!" Especially when its free. My only advice to not do something like that is if you are one of THOSE people who are bad with money don't do something like this as it will get you in a hole that is hard to climb out.

What surprises me about the Motu 16a is how good it sounds for how cheaply it feels. Even the packing is just so cheap (separate 3rd party power cord with bold letters made in china.) My honest opinion after just a little listening is the DA seems to be more listenable on the Motu and the BF Apollo, though improved, still has that thing in the mid range that seems pointy or hard (some may describe it differently.)
With that being said I sent the Motu back. Im realizing I just don't have the time to mess with a bunch of equipment anymore (2 and 3 year old) and need something to just work and be simple. The Apollo, as most of you know just has a killer workflow and is simple and that is what I need with my limited time. So I am downsizing until I can clear up some of my time. Will of course keep some of my hardware but since Im not doing this professionally, I need to tame my desire for high end gear.
Right now Im demoing the UAD plugs and trying to decide on 7 plugs. What are some of the favs for you guys???

That seems to be a pretty accurate depiction of the tone from the D4!

I have no experience with the vintage units but I can tell you that the D4 is very smooth and airy and not crispy on top...everything I hear the vintage units being.

Hi Matt, Interested in pairing a D4 with an SM7B and giving that a try. Are you aware of anyone that has tried that chain, and would you recommend a Cloudlifter? Also, what is the availability of the D4? Do they ship immediately? No problems whatsoever with SM7 and D here!
