I wish they were cheaper...but man, they're really better than most things out there...at least the mkII's. I know the Slate MU isn't supposed to exactly be a Fairchild...but to me, it pales in comparison to the UA version. Well shit. I blame you for this... I've been enjoying the Slate MU as a compressor across a buss from anything not drum related. Tried the MKII Fairchild and it just made everything a tad smoother and more pleasing to the ear. At least it's a cheap upgrade since I already had the original. I do agree that it sounds great and has the edge over the Slate MU. The Fairchild emulations thus far haven't really done anything special for me but this one has something nice going on. I'm sending you the bill... the new Fairchild maybe my favorite! Really good on a lot of things!

So, since I've made the move to PT11 full on without looking back, I've got to figure out what route I want to go in for tuning vocals. I've had the same rtas version of Autotune forever, and instead of upgrading I wanted to get some input from folks on if there is anything better, does more, and sounds more natural. Now, I know some of you on here, your first reaction is going to tell me to "get them lessons", "find someone that can sing" all that shit, but seriously, I want to know what you guys are using, and if it won't work in PT then I really have no use. I know some other DAW's have a free version, but like I said, I'm in PT 11. So anything but autotune I'd be interested in hearing about, and why you think it works well. Thanks gents! I hate when people give narrow minded answers like that... not many people sing in tune (slam me for that but in my experience it's true.) I have both Melodyne and Autotune, I use both. For major tuning I would always use melodyne but for minor intonation issues like a bass guitar, I use autotune in auto mode with slow tuning values. Melodyne works a little differently so you will have to get use to it.

Disclaimer...I love the Apollo and what grounds I think it has broken but I think it is a matter of time when the rest of the developers improve on the design and development something that does the same thing in regards to recording with plugs at very very low latencies but in an open platform (AAX, AU, VST, etc...) For example: Any opinions???

Guys, I have my Daking FET III connected to my MR816. I come out of 7&8 and back to 1&2. I am working on a song that has a quiet intro and noticed hiss. is this a typical battle with patching outboard? Can anyone help me solve the problem? Thanks in advance for any insight. rob depends what outboard...most of my analog outboard is a lil noisy!

no but if Jimmy was in the studio you wouldn't pull out a first act guitar and a practice amp! Don't be so quick to say that. You might actually pull out a First Act... www.firstact.com/customshop/haha

I've always used slower optical or mu compressors...but what's the thinking on this? Never tried it...I would assume 4:1 slow attack, medium release to taste? I guess an option is to just go try it... Been using the WA76 on bass tracks lately and it does a great job. Only thing is it eats up some low end so I have to compensate for that. What settings do you use henge??? Ive been trying WA76 on bass but not quite getting it for me.

API Vision without a doubt...really leaps and bounds ahead of any plug I have. Fatso Lexicon 224. I love this plug for monitoring in the cans for vocals in console and it is awesome for that Fairchild MKII (really incredible) but this can be bought cheaper so you might want to not use this for your bundle deal Pultec MkII same as above Oceanway Studios Really cool plug that does its own thing with room modeling.

I know I sound like a @sinsay commercial...(I'm sure there are other people doing fantastic mods)...but I was over at his house and heard a modded Mojave that sounded absolutely fantastic...Enough to where I was thinking about getting one and getting him to mod. BTW - how much are used Peluso 2247LE's going for? I would think that would be a great platform for a Mic Rehab M7...And maybe buy an Equinox body or something. I guess it would probably be cheaper to just build one yourself though. Do you know what he did to it??

You live here. Call Blackbird next time you're cutting a vocal...line up a real 251 and La2a and a Neve preamp. It will likely be a little easier to work with...but, the end result won't change much. I gotta disagree with you on this line of thought, Pop. You take a vocal path like that and it will throw something to storage that you can't "get" with any amount of post processing. Now I DO agree that one can get to a great take through lessor gear, but there is a reason certain items such as the 251 are sought after. They reproduce more faithfully than lessor items. And that is what MJB likes about Lyle Lovetts record. No Massenberg, no this one or that one can EVER make Lyle Lovett sound better than he would if he where standing 2 feet away singing live in a room. That is the ultimate fidelity. And that's the advantage to using superior tools. If nothing else, they provide a moment of clarity to our sensibility's upon playback that say's to us, "that sounds great. Maybe I should leave that alone." Because most of us if not all are very prone to stepping on our dicks by wanting to put our fingerprint on something, which usually always works as a disadvantage to an end product in my experience. Does the gear make the product?? No. The artist does and I'd bet my last penny that after Massenberg recorded that vocal of Lovett's he didn't do much more than push up a fader. My 2 cents which is worth what you paid for it I remember you posting a song (on the other site) with the vocal done with your U67 and the R84 and though they were similar, everyone thought the U67 track was more appropriate for the track. So I guess in your real world situation it absolutely matters.

Ive bought and returned the Duo (wanted more power) the 16 (didn't have ADAT) and ended up with the quad and each time I registered a unit I took advantage of the custom bundle and now I have all the plugs I wanted. Now this was not premeditated and I even called UAD to inform them of this.

Man, I hate singin in dead rooms...very unnatural but a necessity in a small room. I sing best when Im inspired by the sound Im receiving back in the phones. That means minimal latency, some verb (room ambience) , compression and the right levels. I achieve this with a small console and Apollo. I don't record the compression/reverb and I don't EQ.
John, your stuff sounds great...what do you feel the problem is.

MJB, I love my Mojave MA200. It's a mic that I don't have to add top to... It's just "right." I really loved the Miktek CV4 but not missing it having the Mojave. I bought mine for $695 used. It's cardoid only. It's a very hot mic and won't work well in noisy rooms. Hope this helps!

I swear there's a home demo of Billy Jean out there somewhere...and I swear I've heard it...but I could be making that up. On the album with the Quincy Jones narrative a couple of years ago.

I know this is a little off topic but I never hear you guys talk about the Mojave Audio MA-200...I love this mic and bought mine for $695 on the used market. Great on Overheads, Acoustics and Male Vocals. I read Sylvia Massey loves this mic and uses it to punch in for a U47 when not available. Really good with the VP28. I actually sold my CV4 because this covered a lot of ground for me. I love Royers...I've actually used someone's Mojave KIT (converting a MXL) that was really nice...so, I thought "no brainer" and bought one when it came out, sight unheard. But, put the MA200 on the list of many I simply didn't see any value in keeping. Luckily, it was so immediately obvious that I got that one back in a return window. It was a lot like a 67...a really awful modded 67. Like if you buried a 67 in the Pet Cemetary... I wanted to like it. Maybe it was a QC thing. But, for me, it wasn't just that it was bright--it was that the treble frequencies were scratchy and papery. Tell me how you really feel popmann!! I love that lil Mic, what pet cemetery did you bury it in?? I want to go dig it up.
