Just received this mic a few days ago and man what a gem. Dave really knocked it out of the park with this one. Vocals , Acoustic Guitars, even set it up as a mono room mic for drums and it has excelled at everything so for. My chain for most is AML EZ 1073 - BAE 10DC - VP28 - Symphony Can't say enough about Dave and his Mics If you guys get the chance you should definitely check this mic out it won't disappoint Interesting. Do you always use the VP28 after the Comp? Normally if I patch mine in the chain i use it after my heritage 1073 and before comp? Any particular reason for after the comp? Ive been using the VP28 after the comp to. SCA/N72/WA76/VP28/Burl

I definitely use my VP28's on VI's but what Nico said about your console...be careful! What I do is run into line ins on console, EQ, out of console into SSL buss compressor, VP 28's into Burl! Record it and compensate for latency.

Im really thinking about changing my system to a Burl Mothership as I love my Burl B2 and it's been a game changer for me.
With that being said Im setup now with the Apollo with the B2 into the SPDIF. Im running into a console. Im finding that with the outboard that I have acquired Im no longer interested in tracking with the plugs and Im using a lot less plugs in sessions to achieve the sound Im looking for. I track through a console so Im zero latency anyway.
Im thinking about selling the Apollo (with $4000 worth of plugs) and the B2 and moving to the Mothership with a Avid HD Native thunderbolt unit. I would start with 4 ins and 8 outs and build from there.
Anyone with experience using the unit with Logic X or regular Pro Tools 10 using it's core audio driver?
No doubt this will be a better sounding setup and I think it would hold it's value better as Im looking for a long term solution without always updating plugs and software.

Indeed. Nothing is more humbling than than completing a take and thinking, "that was pretty good", only to solo it back, and discover that your timing/feel was, well, variable. So, in my case, it's all about becoming expert using Elastic Audio, and mastering the technique of transparently fixing things. AND practicing my instruments. Obviously, I would rather play well, and not have to edit my performances, but in the meantime . . . lmao! i thought you were going to go into a whole "practice makes perfect" deal, then bamm! When I started recording in about 93' I had a tascam tape machine and I played 5 or 6 hours a day, when I go back and listen to my playing on those lo fi recordings the playing was TIGHT. I have leaned on things like Elastic audio because I just don't have time to practice like that anymore but my goal this year is to get back to that place. #1 As soon as you put elastic audio or Melodyne on a file it just degrades it a bit. Why the hell do I spend so much money to get the best signal possible then degrade it. #2 I prefer natural feel when my timing/feel/swing is tight compared to a more robotic quantized version.

Im no piano or keys player by any means but I do have an upright piano and I love the feel of playing a real piano and it's recorded sound when done right...just seems to have some soul to it. Might just be my shortcomings with doing the midi thing as it always sounds good but soulless...meh!
It would be cool to see if someone has real experience with the midi add-on.
Now that I think about this...it's got to be too good to be true...like hover bikes!

Fender Tele-Fender deluxe reissue-AEAR84-CAPI VP28-Burl B2 makes me smile
The DIY APEX 460 mods (C12 style and 47) are fabulous and very glad I did this (well, a friend did the work I just came out of pocket for it)
Seventh Circle N72 is just beautiful on vocals
Warm Audio WA76. This wasn't immediate but I kept messing with it and Im finding how to hit the elusive G-spot...cough cough...I mean sweet spot!
Native Instruments Maschine Now before anyone gives me a hard time out this midi piece, i want you to know this is a killer piece of gear. Mocking up drumbeats and sampling things and flying them into sessions is how I use it.

Not a bad price on the Trident but I bought my Oram 8T board for $2500 and if the 80B remake is anything like the Toft ATB, the channels on the Oram in my opinion are just flat out better!

If you don't also own TDM plug ins (or have budgeted for) you would NEED to go the HD Native route. The flaw in TDM is that it eats "voices" for every native plug in you want to use. So, if you're planning to use mostly native plugs, you don't want the HD3. BUT...the HD3 is the better rig if you can use mostly TDM plug ins. That's the biggest consideration, IMO--voice count, which halves at double rate AND burns through them when you use native plugs. Thanks for articulating that for me, that is what I meant when writing about the voicing thing...really drove me crazy and to be honest, I really like my Apollo setup better than the HD rig. Now I know that won't work for you an it seems the orion is the fit for what you need. I would consider the Symphony as you can get the 16 in 32 out thing pieced together and it sounds wonderful or two Lynx Aurora's with one having the Thunderbolt card.

I called vintage king and begged Darren to trade a kidney for a Bricasti but I couldn't persuade him! Then I watched YouTube videos of it for an hour or so...felt dirty like a cheap thrill!! I called back and tried the same thing with the Sta level...he didn't budge! Now I have to figure out how to slip $3600 by my wife.

Matt - "where does it all end" In a pine box, 6 feet under..... :-) Indeed. Or in a small urn, adorned with the Zeppelin sigils. But until then, I'm gonna make music, and try to capture it the best I can, with the best gear I can semi-afford. Call me crazy, but it's good to be alive, and recording. Indeed, it is good to be alive!

There's got to be an octo Apollo on the way! John, I know you can't use the twin with Apollo but can you use the twin for extra processing??

I wouldn't go less than HD3 if going with the older system! My 2cent from experience. hey rick, anymore details on why you say this? thanx from a voicing standpoint (I think that is what the called...it's been 8 years) and for processing power. I would run out of power with a hd2, hd3 would've been enough for my needs.

WTF...it's easy to call someone a Obstinate C--t on the internet??
Im going to act like Im acceptive of every idea until my ego gets hurt and then Im going to come in your house and piss and shit all over it and use some fancy words to make you feel stupid and below me!!! IM RIGHT YOUR WRONG!!
Also, I have no problem with Ethan Winer but believe me when I say that his business comes first and there is a reason why he spends his time and lurking audio forums on the net.
This is a f-ing audio gear site...the its all about the talent or put 1000 broadband absorber panels up(really, no shit sherlock) comments that plague other sites is BS. It seems to me that John is building a site where professionals come to talk about gear without that rhetoric BS. Some are professional engineers, some are singer song writers, etc...
Some people just come off as wanting to be asses...maybe they were bullied or something I dont know but just stop that shit and be cool!
John has one rule...dont be an asshole. Well that and use some common sense to obvious stuff. If someone called me that in my house Id kick his ass out of my house and tell him not to come back till he comes back with a different attitude.
This is a cool place and I like seeing it grow...

I just ran a vocal that was recorded into a N72 pre back out thru the VP28 into a Warm Audio76 into a Clariphonic (hardware) through my console and it was magic! Cant wait to run a mix thru them into the Clariphonic, SSL Bus Comp then Burl B2...pure analog heaven.

I have to agree with Popmann. I have been in all the classifications he listed and its on point.
I love to turn knobs and buy new equipment and Im in a position in life where I'm able to do so...thats why I collaborate with you guys on here to talk about this stuff. I love to record real instruments and play them. It's a heck of a lot harder to do this than to make a piece of music on my Maschine but there is nothing like playing real instruments. I had to address my recording space to make it quiet and sounding good and to be honest, I could have bought a lot of gear with the money I spent on building that space but it was the best decision that i have made. Now I can feel comfortable with buying equipment knowing that Im not amplifying the AC noise, bad reflections and so on with my $1500 Pre-amp or compressing up to 20db's of bad room ambience.
Now if money is an issue it's a beautiful time to be a home recordist...buy an Apollo Twin, some great closed back headphones, 1 SDC, SM7, a Native Instruments Maschine, Guitars (Bass, Acoustic and Electric) a mic reflection thingy and call it a day. About $2000 and your set!
Thats where it should end because with that setup, you can make beautiful recordings with that setup.

I was messing around with the Different UAD 1176 (new ones) and noticed that they all sounded very different so I set the attack, release and ratio the same and adjusted input for exactly the same amount of GR and gain matched with the output. Not scientific, remember I'm a singer songwriter not a professional engineer so don't beat me up too bad. I also added the T Racks and Logic Compressor. i thought someone might enjoy... AE.m4a (669.64 KB) Logic Comp.m4a (687.29 KB) Rev A.m4a (677.68 KB) Rev E.m4a (672.4 KB) T Racks.m4a (714.68 KB)
