"Monitoring off the recording medium in analog is hugely latent in comparison to digital. The analog to digital to analog loopback is much less latent than monitoring off the repro head"
Yea, if you monitor off the repo head while over dubbing. Who does that?
Modern tape machines have sel/sync which turns the record head into a playback head. Allowing playback of recorded tracks while recording new tracks with .ZERO latency Headphones, zero latency. Mixing is done off the repo head, zero latency.
Digital has latency, no matter how small. Period.

This is an old trick used in the past to reamp the snare.
Set up a snare drum on a stand in the studio.
Place an Auratone speaker, speaker facing down, on top of the snare.
Send the recorded snare track to the speaker. The speaker will trigger the snare.
Choose your recording mic. It's placement can determine dry or ambient sound.

Just rewire the capsule leads to the XLR. I have removed many transformers from 57s and have bought some transformerless. I've even removed the comb filtering plastic head. Both an improvement. Try it you just might like it.

The some dual micing technique is used on guitar amps, SDC & 57.
There are dual mic clips available for both snare and amp cabs so no taping is involved and they hold the mics in place.

A compression ceiling starts high in the front and goes lower in the back of the room. An expansion ceiling goes higher toward the rear. Most studio designers these days favor an expansion ceiling. Also, The higher the ceiling the better.

I HAVE A CHANGE TO ENGINEER AND PRODUCE A FEMALE UP AND COMING SINGER - SONGWRITER IN ENGLAND.
Thinking I’d like to take some recording gear and what to take.
The Cranbourn 8 slot 500 rack with some modules would work. It could act as an interface, built in analog mixing and the ability to play tracks back through it as analog hardware. The modules would be hard to decide on with over 150 to choose from. Thinking 2 - 1084s ( 4 slots total) 2 - Capi VP312 D.I.s, extra various op amps, an 1176 and an LA-3 module, for 8 slots total.
Mikes: U47 - AKG Brass Capsule 414eb. - Stereo Ribbon Mic, pair of KM84s. All this would have to be an airline overhead carry on for fear of checking in baggage, theft and handling.
It's be a long time since I've flown, let alone with gear.
Question is; what’s your stories and suggestions on, personal airline travel with recording gear.

My thoughts were always never sell your business tools. So I never sell anything. That's why I have so much vintage gear. I should at some point cash in.

Audio Upgrades High Speed Preamp. This preamp is so fast that there is no sibilance, which is high frequency distortion. Clean, natural, not colored. audioupgrades.comOn the rebuild, Jim Williams installed his high speed op amps on the 2 - stereo buss outputs of my Harrison Console. A world of difference over 5534s. The other choice would be my Boulder Jensen Twin Dual Servo 990 Mic Preamp Fast, Clean.

I've have 2 of the Svart Boxes. They are stereo AD/DA converters. Stereo Spdif and analog, ins and outs, on balanced 1/4" phono jacks. Using one in the transfer room from tape, etc, to digital The other is for mixdown from the analog console. When I get up and running I'll compare the console output to the Converter return. They do 44/48 - 16/24 I'd have to check if others. JDC SAID Sep 13, 2016 at 11:53am Johnkenn, svart, and 3 more like this QuotelikePost Options Post by jdc on Sep 13, 2016 at 11:53am So i've had this unit for almost a year now, and it's hard to overstate how important it has been to our workflow at the studio. Our first step was to place it as the monitoring DAC and compare it to the stock 16a converters. The differences were not subtle. The amount of clarity and depth with which you can hear into the mixes has made an immediate improvement in mixing decisions. It does what any good monitoring DAC should do and gets out of the way, it feels completely transparent, as if you are starting with a blank canvas. The phrase "surgical" comes to mind, but that would be too close to "sterile". Instead i think "neutral" is a better term, allowing you make choices without fighting with the conversion. The biggest differences I noticed were in the lower and higher frequencies. The low end felt more clear, less obscured and wooly when compared to the 16a, and the top felt open and accurate. The 16a's stock converters sounded muddy and clouded by comparison. This shouldn't be read as a knock on the 16a, it has been a great studio tool that I would recommend to everyone, this should read more as how great I think Svart's converter box is. It's an invaluable tool in our studio that gets used every day, once I think everyone should try in their studios because it has made an immediate difference in ours. Sound: Clear and transparent, perfect for monitoring, tracking, or making round trips from your DAW Functionality: Easy menu navigation, SPDIF connectivity (to use it with the 16a I convert to optical using these two converters: To Svartbox, From Svartbox) Value: I've used a BLA signature modded 002, the 16a, Ross Martin Superbeast II and PCM4222, and a Digi 192. This unit is far and away the best sounding converter i've used. It's more expensive on a per channel basis, but the time saved during the mixing process feels like it pays for itself. Overall: Would recommend. I only wish I had a second one.

I have multiple pairs of all the Monoprice planar and electrostatic headphones. When the Monoprice store was down the street, Rancho Cucamonga, I was able to buy their planar headphones for $60. - $80 a pair at the store or parking lot sales.
Sorry, I really don't track or mix with headphones so I haven't sonically compared them. No help there. but The studio musicians Love the planers, easier listening for long periods of time.

All my Harrison consoles have a built in omni talk back mics activated by a console button or foot switch. If the API has such accommodations I'd suggest an Omni mic.

Going to thin the herd and sell one of the eight cars to pay off some bills I pay on line. I've always taken cash for selling large items, now I'm starting to wonder if my bank will accept a large sum of cash? Other than cash how would the buyer pay me in this new financial world. I've received fake cashier's checks in the past. A Bank transfer? Couldn't buy breakfast this morning cause the restaurant's electric went out. Cash only. I'm confused.

On the subject of cash, A friend needed a loan and asked if I could deposit some money in their bank account. I went to their bank and tried to deposit $400.00 in their account. The bank wouldn't take the cash deposit.

I agree with Rick's Rant about the way the Music business use to be and what's happening now. Well the fact is, nothing is the way it use to be. The fact is that musicians have always been the ones to screw themselves and people take advantage of that. Remembering, playing the free audition night while they were charging at the door. And if you wouldn't play for free someone would.
What if everybody stopped posting their videos or pulled their songs off streaming services (giving up a few peanuts) Where would these companies be?
It's time artists stop bending over and STAND UP.

Not gear really but something I'll enjoy more than anything.
After completely rebuilding and finally putting my Harrison Console back in service, the 42 year old armrest with ripped vinyl looked old and was uncomfortable to rest on.
So. I just bought half a cowhide to reupholster the armrest. It's going to be well padded for comfort with custom stitching.
It's time the old gal got a Designer Armrest.

Still using 5 of the old $99.00 Costco mesh chairs for years.
No problems, rips or tears.
If so they are returnable.
