I’m certainly no DIY expert but I do it often enough that I should get something decent. Also, I’m tired of using solder wicks to remove the stuff.
Happy to drop a little $$ on some good tools.

Thanks I’m advance What are you trying to desolder? As a master solderer, I mostly use wick and solder suckers IF I use anything at all. These days I'm pretty impatient so I'm doing the heat-and-tap method. I also do mostly SMD these days too, so wick is really the only thing I can use, and that's usually only to clean up the pads after removing parts. I have a 2000$ desoldering station at my disposal but it's such a hassle keeping it clean that I rarely use it. |

Nothing crazy, mostly cables, the occasional pot.
Def not looking to drop $2k. Thinking like $150 or something. My soldering iron is starting to go as well so was looking at a combination setup.

Hakko here, but for years had a cheap eBay copy that was fine for what you describe.

I have the Hakko Desolder gun and its amazing for through hole stuff and other things. Game changer. Ditto here. After buying it I was smashing my head into the wall wondering why I had not bought one 20 years earlier. I don't use it all the time, but when I need it I REALLY need it. Like getting pots with 6 legs out of PCB's. 1.5 minutes of ease vs. 30 minutes of frustration.... |

When I bought mine I was in Electronics Supply had my hands in my pockets and this old school tech is going off about “ what a waste of money all you need is a manual vacuum sucker”. Then he saw my right hand with the missing fingers. |

Weller here, but I started over 2 decades ago and we didn't have Hakko and other less expensive alternatives. During my stint at Keeley Electronics, everyone was outfitted with Weller variable temp irons. Hakko will do everything you need. I agree with ericn tim drbill and winetree, if anyone plans on doing more than just a random DIY kit here and there, buy a nicer variable temp iron. It should last you a lifetime and will be worth it in the long run. A quality desoldering gun can save you hours of frustration when you are making a repair/mod and can't get that last piece of solder removed from a tiny pad (transformers mounted to PCB's can be a real hassle to remove sometimes). |

Getting a used Hakko off ebay was the single biggest improvement I've ever made to efficiency. If you don't like a joint, boom, it's clean. It's not just for mistakes, I mostly use mine in repairs and mods. Absolutely paid for itself in time saved and, like others, I'm annoyed that I waited a few years to do it. If you go used, just make sure you can get parts for the model. Filters will always be available but the diaphragm for the pump is important as they are rubber and do fail eventually.

Yeah Christian I can’t believe how much easier quick repairs are, the Faders used in BSS FCS 960’s are unubtaineable, unless you you grab them from non functional units. The biggest time sink now is waiting for it to heat up. |
