Looking for what you guys think are must have 500 series Comps. They can be utility or one trick pony's. I already know that the FC526 is going to be on that list!
Let it begin!

Part 1: Someone please describe the sound of a 160 (VU, or similar) and put it in comparison with other standards in the industry. (next part after that) Soft and gritty! It rounds sources but still leaves a presence to the signal. They can get gritty but in a good way. IMO edit… I don't think they sound like anything else, since they started the VCA comp tech. I have never heard anything do what the VU does. I am getting a pair of silent:arts 500 series 903's with the transformer output option. Hoping it is a cheaper alternative to a real vintage 160VU. The original 903 gets close I think, about the same as a 160. So hoping the 903-51x is between a VU and a XT.

While cleaning my work area last night, I finally sat down and really tore into the La3a. I am happy to say that my Laz La3a is finally functional, except for the broken meter! Who needs metering anyway?

unit7, well it's good to be working. I went ahead and ordered the last two PMV70X's that Volker had in stock. Can't wait to test them out.

Finally had a few hours to do the PMV70 kit which have been laying here for a couple of weeks. Again, this build is stellar. Everything fits perfectly. I've only talked into it, using an AT4050, also to check that 48V is working. I believe I sensed a minor difference between the 560 and the PMV70, with the PMV70 perhaps sounding a tad bit more balanced and fuller. Again, I'm buried in work but I'll do a proper test later. But it's very clear that these are really good. Fat sound, low noise and I get the feeling the headroom is really good, so typical everyday, versatile workhorses ready for all sorts of action. Did you get a chance to test it out more extensively?

Hi, I was thinking about purchasing a couple of 560a 500 series compressors, but I'm wondering how they compare to the 160's. Anybody have experience with both? If you are handy with an iron I would look at silent:arts' kits over on groupdiy.com. Volker is a part of the 51x alliance with Jeff of CAPI. Been toying with the idea of replacing my 2 903's with two of his w/transformers

Just ordered a matched pair of Warbler MKID's from MR. GZ. I also inquired about the GZ67 tube, but have to wait on that one. Now for the wait...

Well, I got through my session tonight with only 1 record drop out. Only used 5% of the CPU. I have a feeling that I may need to drop my USB3 to DVI adapter/video card. They claim it has enough power, but i was getting a lot of display issues. I also had to run the fan control app and keep it spinning just under 3000 rpm. Maybe I just have a heat problem in the machine?

Please keep reporting on this, Patrick! I have a 2013 Mini, just bought a 16a, and am running PT10 on Mountain Lion. Right now, I'm rebuilding my studio, so am not recording or mixing, but when I was finishing my last project, I would occasionally see CPU warnings for what appeared to be no reason. I appreciate reading about anything you happen to come up with in the way of insights. I did a few things today that seemed to help. I am a little concerned that I can't use a 64 buffer for tracking. Get about 20 sec in and the cpu crashes. I have read reports that guys are doing 24 tracks at a 64 buffer, no problem. I have to use 128 then everything is great. You feel the latency a bit though at 128. 64 over Thunderbolt is amazing, to bad my system does not like it.

ah I am on tbolt pci-e and usb 2-3, happy with your new motu ? I only need the firewire because I have old drives that are firewire only. The 16a is great. Once you get the routing and set everything up. I will say the mac driver and PT integration is much better then on Win 7. Mac does not require PT to restart when you change the buffer. If you have the Motu already installed then install PT it ports all the I/O beautifully. Not sure if that is just an improvement with PT10/12. 9 was a real pain. I have found a few random "solutions" on the DUC that I will try before the session tonight. If I can't get it stable I will go to usb and my old laptop. Luckily is a low channel count recording.

I know El cap is compatible with PT12, but El cap drops firewire support.
I have a lot of old stuff that I need the option to open PT10 and not loose all the old rtas plugs. PT10, mountain lion, and my machine should be a perfect fit.

Are you against running El capitan ? I would rather not loose firewire and pt10.

Did you get the fan hooked back up? Is the thermal sensor working or do you need a fan control program? Fan is hooked back up and working. Installed a fan control app, that's how I found it was not working.

This is jumping off my PT10 CPU Freak out thread. Hopefully someone can shed some light. I am at my wits end.
Found out that some of my cpu load issue was due to overheating, did not quite get the fan connection back in when I added a 2nd SSD.
New Issue:
Recording 16 channels is not possible for more then 2 min, I get a CPU overload warning and it drops out of record.
I have read many time over that guys are recording 32 plus tracks at a time, no problem with the same Mac Mini. One guy was claiming 100 tracks. While testing my record capabilities for a gig tomorrow, I had Activity monitor open and system usage open at the same time. Activity Monitor never showed a cpu spike, but Protools cpu usage spiked and it dropped out of rec. This is in both PT10 and PT12.3!
I have a live remote session tomorrow night. I would like to use PT12 and my new Motu 16A but looks like it may be back to the 003, ugh!

Well, I thought this was a isolated issue and that it could be fixed by turning off all tracks. Well that does not seem to be the case. Prepping for a live tracking session, set up a template and did a test drive of 16 tracks at a 64 buffer. System freaked out. Tried different buffers got it kinda working, then the cpu would creep up and crash.
I am now uninstalling and reinstalling the system.

FWIW, For freaking years I looked high & low for a Ursa Major Stargate & finally found one recently. On the console buss it can get impressively plate like. I often use the UAD 140/250…preceded by OW (especially on stereo console channels) or, Lexicon PCM stuff but, the depth of the HW box & how it envelopes the source can't be denied. Even a darn microverb used judiciously can be sweet. …The Sony being another very usable one to keep an eye out for. What is OW? I know I'm gonna smack my head when you tell me :-) Ocean Way, I do believe. That how I read it.

A friend has a Kawai baby grand, and I know what you mean. They have an odd dark almost muddy low mid range. The last time I recorded it I tried a bunch of different mics and did not settle on really loving any of them. Next time I am going to try the OktavaMod MC-012's.
I have used, at4050's, Hulk 990, Shinybox Ribbon. Was not super happy with any of them. I ended up doing a lot of eq to remove the lowend/low mid bloat.

I picked it up just because it was cheap, and the 160vu, and something else. I tell my self don't do it, but I need aax now that I am switching to pt12.

What would you say it's compressive nature is? That's what I love about tube pres, the slight rounding and added harmonics.
Is it in the "wow that's different", or in the "I only hear it when pushed, right before distortion" camp?
Thanks

My friend has some Hosa snakes he wants to sell me but whats the quality of Hosa ? His prices are cheap but I don't wanna buy crap . How much have they been used? Plugged and unplugged? Hosa is not bad/terrible until you start stressing the cables. They are cheap enough that I would not buy them used IMHO.

Thanks for posting that, Pat. I was going to add, "run Disk Warrior" to the list. Oh and I have had a few PT plugins get wacky and cause problems. Sans-Amp, as I recall and even the PT 10 de-esser. Regards, Ty Ford Yeah, it was a fun couple of days... I love banging my head against a wall trying to figure out random/inconsistent computer issues. The funny thing is there are tons of threads describing almost my same issue, and almost all of them never list a solution. On a side note I also found out that on a duel install of 10 and 12, the 10 preferences don't get put in the correct folder, they are scattered about. The 12 preferences are however neatly packaged in a self contained folder.

So, ran the sessions tonight. Turned the track voices off before starting.
Introduced 1 track voice back in at the beginning and middle of the song. No issues what so ever!
Opened different session, played it twice through before the cpu started freaking out. Quickly turned a track voice off, cpu went back to normal operation. Turned the track back on and played the song through multiple times. Worked perfectly.
I am a little lost on a why, but at least I figured out a work around if it starts up again on these 3 tracks.

This is my next step. Need to rule out all session file commonality.
I already tried a copy session in, that had the same issue. Need to look at the files themselves.

Well perhaps you only have one bad track as opposed to the whole session ? Yeah hopefully, just really odd that 3 out of the 8 have the issue. The others run like I thought they would on the new system and PT.
