Mixing a rock'ish song that calls for a more processed sound (finally! ). Compared the eq on my desk (Harrison), LC53As and the TB550, and winner was the TBs. Used on BD, SD and OHs with some pretty heavy boosting. Feeling some DIY luuuve here!

I'll probably get flamed for this but... For Vox I've been doing distressor attack 3, release 7, 10:1 shaving 2-6 or 8 on peaks feeding retro 176 higher ratios attack med slow release med fast hitting HARD...maybe -20 on peaks feeding doublewide slowest attack, fastest release as much as -10 or 12. Geez...I'm scaring myself. For drums on the record I'm working on I made stereo stems (which I like to do so we overdub to more finished sounding drums). Inside kick parallel compressed through bomb factory Fairchild just 1 or 2 db (I don't know why it's my favorite kick comp but it is!!) Outside through RNLA pretty slammed slow attack fast release and then the blend parallel through Overstayer "master and servant" (more of a peak bending line amp, soon to be unleashed. My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE GENIUS GAME CHANGING analogue processor. Be prepared.) Top snare parallel through that old digi focusrite red comp on 57 and same on 451 then blend through OS master and servant. Toms with same digi focusrite ( not parallel). Mono room smashed with RNLA (love these things). Rooms tracked through BAE 10dc pumping a bit, med attack/fast release, 4:1, no limiter. Then all close mic blends parallel through overstayer FET and stereo master and servant, blended on drum buss then the whole drum mix through BAE 10dc. Gtrs 3 to 6 db through 1176s slow attack/ fast release. Bass through distressor 5/5 at 6:1 and then doublewide shaving 2-8 db. I swear it sounds great! I committed to ALMOST all ribbons and dynamics on this record and hit a lot of line amps and stuff after the pres so it's all pretty low mid/low focused and gooey as hell. Oh boy...I'm gonna get beat up for this post. Flamed?..Why?!...I think we've got a winner!

Pretty sure 7.4 could not pull that off. Seems like 9 was the first time I could change tempo and the cymbals would hold. Ok, I see. PT9 here and I never worked w EA before PT9, so... But does your experience/assumption include using the rendered process?

According to this Elastic audio was introduced w PT7.4: en.wikiaudio.org/Pro_Tools:Elastic_audioDon't know how it sounded back then though, or if it was stable... But these days I think 7bpm works fine with drums/perc and monophonic instruments. Although going from 80bpm to 87 is much more (in %) than going from 120 to 127.

I'm looking forward to a little DIY this holiday, LC53As and another U76 on the way. But the big thing this Christmas would be a pair of Steve Jackson's Pultecs. Haven't decided yet. Still negotiating with Santa.

Adam S2X + Sub10 in a well treated room. To me they have a good balance between analytical/revealing and inspirational. You have to struggle some to get a mix to sound good, and I'm rarely dissapointed when I listen to my mixes on other systems, quite the contrary. man Paul, i'd love to spend a couple days watching you pushing faders on your harrison(never used one). That space of yours sounds killer, every time i've heard your stuff, or you mention some piece, my outer ears tweak back lol I'd totally invite myself , but Socal-Stockholm? $3,500?? air fare mehhh.. Thanks Tony!! Welcome anytime. But a short visit in my studio would be more than enough, I promise. Instead I'd recommend the unbelievably beautiful archipelag on the east coast outside Stockholm, and also back packing way up north in the summer with the midnight sun and all. One of the more exotic things you can do here.

I have both (HW). That Elysia demo isn't lying. Takes the TD concept one step further. I have TD as SW too. Useful but doesn't grab the way the HW do.

Wasn't this done with a "TV Mix"? Music bed off the record, but live vocals. I used to mix every record like that... back in the day. I still get requests for going back to the mixes and make TV mixes for singles. I still do that. But on this clip I believe it's playback because the bad lip sync. Might as well be bad sync at YouTube though, but I doubt it...

Just used a Lexicon PCM Chamber on a vocal and it was better than anything else I tried...VVV, EMT250, 224, Altiverb... I bought the PCM bundle the other day (for $299!). Totally agree. Used it (instead of Bricasti...) on two small projects now. Small Hall and Vintage plate on a big band thing. Awesome!

horvitz Thanks Brian! Hmm, fair enough, but I'm kind of scared of the man, just by reading the 525 thread And judging by his signature on GDIY, he probably won't sell the kit to me anyway. But I noticed today that Eliani at GDIY is doing a build report so, who knows.. lol, paul covered what i said in about 2 sentences, and beat my long winded ass to it FYI, if you'd go for Brian's 550eq you'd get his build guide/sorting sheets which, if possible, beats Chunger's guides.

Just ordered probably my final pair of LC53A kits, will probably go for another Don Classics U76 and a stereo 1176 soon, but what after that? 2014 could turn out to be a very long year without more kits. Jeff (or Brian), I know you've commented on a 527 comp at GDIY and that there's already PCBs available (hmm well kind of...). But it would be SO nice if you could do a full kit instead. How about LC27 or TB27? I'd be all over it. Anyone else want to help me trying to persuade Mr Steiger or Mr Horvitz?

Now all we need is a comparison to the UAD 1176 Bluestripe... Don't have the UAD, but I did compare to Waves CLA comps and was actually pretty impressed by the plugin. Things you don't want to talk about after a build project

Did a recording session in another studio tonight. After session had 5 minutes of nerdery with the house engineer, comparing his two vintage blackface 1176s with my U76, again on snare. More or less the same impression as when comparing with my Purples. The U76 is dirtier and not as full bodied. For subtle and discreet compression I'm pretty sure I'll turn to other units in the future. This is box is meant to make some noise!

I just listened a little back and forth between LX480, Lex PCM bundle and Phoenix/R2 (demo). I really liked the Lex bundle. Because Lex isn't hyped much nowadays my expectations weren't that high, so that was a nice surprise. Felt no immediate urge to get the Phoenix/R2, but need to test more of course.
