Just replaced the stock EH tube for a selected/tested NOS GE tube from Christian Whitmore and was surprised that, except for more output, I could hardly hear any difference. Mentioned this for Ivan@Flea and he said that the EH tubes are carefully measured/selected and that this was exactly their experience too, with NOS 6072s. Though this mic imo is generally a bit on the bright side for jazz vocalists I really love it.

This resonates (zing!)... If you hear a "zing" when you tap gently on the mic (do it gently with a finger nail with cans/volume cranked) something is probably wrong, could be the tube

I've had two Flea 49s for 15 years and love them. Doesn't fit all voices of course but is my goto for female jazz vocalists. I think I agree about the low end, but my feeling is that it's fairly neutral. From what I've learned the 49/50 was designed for orchestral recordings so the idea was to keep it neutral/unhyped, so perhaps (hopefully) that's what you're hearing..

It’s a beautiful handmade bit of kit that sounds better than many 3 times its price, with a lifetime guarantee. POM takes so much pride and keeps a record of each unit. He winds clone transformers or you can pay for originals but I don’t think it’s necessary. He is very thorough. Hi celebrity client list is insane but he’s pretty discreet so unless you ask. I’d get another if I had rackspace as I love the tone. He’s also a lovely guy and goes the extra mile to look after each and every customer. Don’t hesitate. Thanks Paul!! Great info. I know Michael Ilbert who is on POM's client list, we've worked and co produced in the 90s and he was the one introducing me to a 670 (and high end Italian wines!) in Copenhagen.

With the privilege having a couple of POM Fairchild owners at this board - spindrift , christophert , paulcheeba (are there even more?) - I’d like to ask a couple of things, if you have the time: - How would you describe the sound/character of it? - What do you use it for mostly? - Do you have any insight about the difference in sound between OG xformers (if they are even possible to get..), the new US custom made xformers and the inhouse o/p xformer POM are offering? - Finally, have you heard it beside an Unfairchild? Or is there perhaps a thread somewhere where this is discussed? Grateful for any tips! My one lives on the mix bus when mixing, and I love it on drum overheads when recording. I have a pair of BG2s for tracking vocals and bass and never want to take them off. Also a Zener Limiter for sometimes tracking guitars, so I have not had the urge to try using the POM on other sources. An API2500 for drum bus on rock mixes at times, where I want snappy vibey rock compression.
I have original transformers, the mix/wet function and variable release mod. The wet / dry is always around 50% - and it sounds amazing, and makes it more transparent as I don't like hearing compression artifacts as a general rule (the BG2's are incredible for this) The POM does lovely things to the top end.
Other engineers that know the originals say my POM sounds better. No experience with the Unfairchild or Stam.
There is not many out there to try - my one is 18 months old - and serial #60.
Hope that helps
Helps a LOT! Thanks So much! Since I already have the AnalogueTube clone I guess I'll have to go for original transformers too, or I'd be forever curious how it would sound. I have worked with a couple of originals though, but they behaved very differently. Thanks again for sharing!

Ha ha, you got me! But seriously, I've had two AnalogueTube AT101s here for 15 yrs and while one sounds majestic on the mixbus and will stay there as long as there is electricity the other has been used less and less, so perhaps time for a change :-) Oh I get it, sometimes I feel like just plunking down the deposit on the stamchild and damn the torpedos 1 There's one UF on Reverb currently. French seller, so good for us in the EU, and they seem eager to sell. Studio liquidation.. But then there's the POM...have heard so many good things about it..

I have 3 and I love them. I've got MK4, MK41 and MK21 capsules. The MK21 is really interesting, not quite omni, not quite cardioid. On acoustic guitars I either go for MK41 if I want to kill the room or 21 if I want a bit more depth. The MK4 is great, it's a classic for a reason. Compared to a KM84 which most people are familir with , it's slightly darker but sounds more natural. The KM84 is unbeatable for instant pop/rock mixed sound but the Schoeps are a bit more transparent. It is a bit picky as far as preamps go I find, the 84 sounds more consistent across preamps. I also really like Schoeps as overheads in a small room, I've done a ton of records with MK41s as overheads and it's a nice sound, nice stereo, separation and doesn't sound harsh like a lot of cheaper sdcs. I'll see if I can record a quick pass against a KM84. +1 totally MK4 or 21 for a really high end sound on acoustic, grand piano and overs is as good as it gets. I also have a matched trio of MK2S capsules for Decca tree which sounds just lovely. I've worked with the DPA and Sennheiser equivalents a couple of times and they are fantastic but every time I record with Schoeps I smile a little extra. While absolutely in the clean domain there's something smooth and musical to them. Re CMC5 or CMC6 body I believe they only make the latter, not? CMC5 I believe was the former generation body/amp.

As a Stockholmer I have worked at Atlantis many times since the 80s and know the sound of both their chamber and EMT plate well. Love both. They do have two chambers but have used only one of them for a long time, so really cool that Softtube "sampled" both. As a side note, in the 70s one of the sound signatures of Metronome Records, the original studio owner, was using one chamber panned hard left for use on sources panned hard right and vice versa, hence the two chambers.
As John mention it really fits old school production style very well and of course any music that calls for a big vibey sounding chamber. I mix a lot of jazz so I use it from time to time, though never with clients who don't want the retro style.
Another side note is that I recently talked to the current engineer who helped the Softtube team. During beta testing he did some A/B and said that he could just barely tell which was which when listening to solo'ed sources but in a mix it was impossible to tell the difference between plug in and the real thing. So good job Softube.

I believe AI will have a big impact and I'm scared and not very optimistic. At least from a musician's and audio engineer's point of view. A Donald Fagen line comes to mind.. "A just machine to make big decisions/Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision/We'll be clean when their work is done/We'll be eternally free yes and eternally young"
Another aspect is the regrowth of new musicians. Especially in classical there has been a bad trend for some years. It's becoming harder and harder for the symphonic orchestras to find/employ musicians that are up to given standards. Many say that in this digital age it's hard to motivate kids to practice for years to learn an instrument. I don't believe AI will change that, most probably the opposite.

I'm a keyboard guy. Except for the polarity switches mentioned on some pedals, some keyboards have this parameter in systems settings. But this seems odd, almost sounds like a faulty cable. I've had a couple of those.. Edit: Ah, so a plug in could possibly auto detect?! Cool! As long as it works..

I got the Sonic Farm Xcalibur JC this week and it's a keeper. Also have two Culture Vulture Mastering version anniversary limited editions which are fantastic. Then two Standard Audio Level-or and a couple of DIY-RE Color modules. I'm using all these in parallel to add a fairly subtle touch so having all these, for what I do mostly, is quite an overkill, but then...hearing what a high end tube saturator adds is one of those precious things :-)

Well the 1991 Yamaha c7 grand piano was the biggest thing… the quartet of Lauten LS308s are a massively great tool on toms, Derek’s Vanguard V44s mk 2 was like a gift. Amazing stereo mic There were a thousand other things but those were my ‘wow’ items C7, loved the couple I've encountered. Congrats!

Thanks! Got cooling in that equipment room. And to get more space in the main room That's a great idea. I've never thought of doing it that way. Well, I already had the equipment room :-) ... Another advantage is of course that fans in computer and interfaces don't disturb

So I'll post and also see if I can use that PostImage thing properly.. As mentioned in the "Latest Gear" thread I've gone from mixing with an analog desk to hybrid. 56 I/o (Avid), new custom made desk. Sold a lot and then got a new Mac mini M2, a 43" screen, Avid controllers, four UAD octo satellites, three Chandler RS660 and Sonic Farm Creamliner and Xcalibur. Also a 2nd Chandler REDD47 and an AnalogueTube AT-1. Have mixed two albums already. First was a beautiful classic jazz/evergreen album with piano, string ensemble and vocal, everything recorded simultaneously, not much processing, so kind of easy start. The second was jazz quintet including drums and I realized how used I am with my old desk and really had to work and experiment to get the sound I'm used to. But I have to say already that this hybrid way is so fun! Much easier to try new stuff and experiment, so I'm really stoked for 2024 and on!

This year has been exciting and I've sold a bunch of gear to finance new stuff for the hybrid setup with 56 i/o, a Mac mini M2, 3 Avid S1s, 1 Avid Dock and a beautiful custom made desk and a 43" screen. After selling a lot of outboard, the "only" new outboard I got for the new setup is a Chandler REDD47 (to complete a stereo set), an AnalogueTube AT-1, three Chandler RS660 (my new favorite comp), a Sonic Farm Xcalibur JC and finally a Sonic Farm Creamliner III. After mixing with a Harrison desk for 15 yrs I'm now searching and experimenting to get the sounds that I'm used to, or hopefully even better.

Got my Sonic Farm Creamliner today and first impression was very impressing (final stage on the mix bus). Will soon get some NOS EF86 tubes which may lift it up yet another notch. I don't know if Sonic Farm is well established in the home country (Canada) but surprisingly I don't see/hear much about them on the web. They seem to do really great stuff and I think they deserve more attention

Owner of two AnalogueTube AT-101s here since 12-13 yrs. Knock on wood, but still no tube issues. Have had crackling sound from one tube on like three occasions during the years but it turned out to be oxide, not a bad tube. DeoxIT Gold is your friend. Fixed in 15 minutes Hey! Yeah those Analogue tube units are really well made. Do you have JJ 6386s in yours? I see now they are saying "Newly developed 6386 Triode tubes– new feature". EV Yes JJs in them. I believe the “newly developed”/“new feature” thing has been stated ever since Simon started soon 15 yrs ago😄

Hi Eric ! How long can one expect to use a set of JJ tubes, with a daily use of the comp, before having to change the set ? Is heat a serious problem ? Love shoot outs! But found the resonances of that room and the background noise a little disturbing. And also questioning why singers sang without cans, especially the male vocalist. Some of his belting was really piercing and if he'd heard himself perhaps he'd done something to even it out a little. Also, would have been nice to hear the female vocalist singing the soft parts a tad closer to the mics. But anyway..to me the differences weren't that big, lovely mics! I have no regrets getting the Flea. I felt the Bock was a bit brighter than the rest, but in a nice way, and the Warm sounded the least 3D to me.
