@smallbutfine Hey Martin, thanks for the push! Hanging around GDIY a lot so I have seen different kits etc. Tempting and perhaps it will happen later, but for now, with a collection of perhaps 50 mics and a recording booth on 9 square meters, it will have to wait.

Quick note... It turned out that the gorgeous looking knobs couldn't be fastened on the NV73 Bourns pot and Greyhill switch beacuase the shafts are too short. Believe I've read somewhere about that. Perhaps there's a solution, but I just wanted to alert NV73 owners.

Off topic, but I'm probably not the only one that simply miss that Donate button that is down there all the time. I don't use to participate in giveaways, but if someone reminds me that they need a little support to run a place where I like to hang out, I do that. I just put $3/monthly. I know it's nothing but I guess if a few more would do the same it could do some good, or?

Thx Tony! Yes, I'm sure a HPF will be very useful. I often track with compressor so want to get rid of plosives from vocals and thumps from acoustic. I've seen that Harrison filter, looks great and should do the job.

tonycamphd onlymeeee recommended a 12dB/octave filter to keep it simple and use only two capacitors and one resistor, and an extra switch of course. He also showed me this page were you can enter a capacitor value and get the filter frequency: sim.okawa-denshi.jp/en/CRhikeisan.htmI was instructed to enter 10k in the R box and then a capacitor value in C. onlymeeee suggested Wima filmcaps so I checked available values and went for 220n, giving a 72Hz filter. Just want to point out that I'm a total electronics noob. I'm getting the big picture more and more but have no idea on how all the components work and interact. I did a sketch of the schematic of the super simple circuit above and of course got it wrong so onlymeeee had to make a new proper one. Then he asked me to draw a sketch on how to actually put the components together and where to connect in the NV73 circuit, just to make sure I got everything right before soldering. Got that wrong too, even with the help of onlymeeee's schematic. Remember, this is two capacitors and one resistor... I'm hopeless Anyway, if the build is successful and I like the pre I could be looking to mod it to something steeper, 18db/octave, and more towards 80Hz, but I believe that would be more components and with no pcb space it could be a bit messy. We'll see. Anyway I'll return with a little mini diary of the mod when I get everything together, hopefully...

Yep, hooked we are... Don't know how much more the NV73 16V version is. Other than the DC to DC converter there's only a few other components. But one reason for me to do one 16V rack and one 24V (cAPI kit w double floorbox PSU) was to possibly add Neve style pre's w/o having to deal w voltage conversion.
Wow man, you've even built mics... Impressing for 18 months of DIY.
Speak soon Cheers! Paul

tonycamphd Ok, I thought you had done them all! I'll be glad to share my impressions. I started building kits this year and have done like 10 units from TB and cAPI now and this was a bit different. Not a complete kit, a little sourcing of parts, not the detailed manuals I've been spoiled with, no Chunger guide at GDIY, and also the HPF mod I decided to do. Build time for me, including sorting components, perhaps 6-7hrs. Will be much faster next time, should be doable in like 4hrs. Not that I want to hurry. Never thought I'd like soldering, but this has become my meditation and therapy, giving a calm and focused state of mind. Speaking of therapy, a friend of mine visited my studio recently and halted by the rack and said 'WOW, are you aware of how much money you must have saved by buying this instead of going to therapy!'

While waiting forever for the LC53As to be in stock again I decided to go for onlymeeee's NV73 kit. I've got an empty 51X rack here, so I'm doing the 24V version. Unfortunately a few parts are on hold so I've got everything ready except for perhaps two components. Got the new ELMA british retro style knobs from Jeff yesterday (along with the new 51X test jig) and those knobs are the sh*t! Really super quality, almost bakelite heavy. Highly recommended. With the really nice looking NV73 faceplate this is going to look great. And I'm pretty sure it'll sound just as good. Have the AMS/Neve reissues here so it'll be interesting to A/B.
BTW, onlymeeee helped me adding a HPF to the build, so I had to drill an extra hole in the faceplate and add a few components. Will do a documentation of that little mod when I've got everything together.

unit7 you said "THIS double bass player" Yikes man ;-) Edgar Meyer's one of the greatest bass players in the world, possibly the finest, think.. the Yo Yo Ma of bass, only with a broader genre bending talent, and he's a major composer too . Chris Thile's in a league of his own, just magnificent. Martin John Butler Sorry, didn't mean to disrespect

Yes, this reminds me of an ad with golfer Payne Stewart (R.I.P) he did for one of the big club brands. Payne was always dressed very well and very old school, and he looked straight into the camera and said 'If you're gonna dress like this, you gotta be able to back it up', and then fired away. Loved that ad

A killer 500 format de esser in complete DIY kit! Guys I'm as analog as anyone, but I can't see how a de esser can gat much better than the Fab Filter d sss. And the price is right! MJB, I've heard lots of rave reviews about that Ross Martin from guys who know what theyre doing. Where there's smoke there's usually fire. I'd give it a shot. I guarantee it would be a step up from the Apollo without even hearing it. Great, got two de ess advisssesss from this thread only. Knew about the fab filter but never heard it. Time for demo! cowboycoalminer Cowboy, saw that you mention the Shadow Hills MC. Have you heard it? I've got the limited edition. Haven't played with it that much yet, but for 'thwack' I think there are better options. Also, I've heard from a couple of guys saying that the Vandergraph compares pretty well. One of them traded in the Vandergraph for the MC and though he love the MC, he misses the VG.

I still really like all of Rascal Flatt's records, and I'm a jazz musician I think their stuff is tops, but that's the only country i've ever listened to. Don't worry, you've still not heard country music. Ok, so how about Vince Gill (still haven't heard his latest) and Allison Krauss? Those are my favorites. I know AK is bluegrass of course, but aren't both considered country artists?

Over at the purple place now and then I get PMs from people that want to investigate about gear that they see that I have or tested. Obviously I like to talk gear so I don't mind those questions and discussions. I'm not a celebrity and certainly not a diva expecting people to treat me any special or particularly polite. But if I spend 5-10 minutes working on a reply in english, even if my reply was totally useless, at least I expect some kind of response, even just a thumbs up. I'm I getting old? Is this how things work nowadays? A bit pissed here actually... You don't expect a 2 month baby thanking the mother after breast feeding, but grownups with that blind 'feed me-attitude' stinks!

Got it here. Never was a 480 fan back in the 90s when it was king, so I don't have an educated 480 ear, and can't say much about how close it is to the original. Of the Lexicon style software options available I just felt this was the most serious and I'm very happy with it. Have you tried the demo?

Great clips! Here's a clip with Gabriela Montero who improvises over classical themes, and even takes requests from audience and members of orchestra. I believe this was a request to do very well known 1st movement of Rachmaninovs 3rd piano concerto in Baroque style! She's soo cool! Even has a glass of wine beside her (perhaps not in this clip) to make it feel more 'like home'. The story goes that pianist superstar Martha Argerich heard her improvise, which she had done all her life, and encouraged her to make it her 'thing'. Not too common in the classical world. Music starts at 1.35.

Johnkenn:) John, I mixed an album with swedish saxophone player Magnus Lindgren a while ago, and Gregory sings on a few songs. I mentioned that (with a link to YouTube) on the other thread where you mentioned you like him. And I agree. He's outstanding. Unfortunately never met him, but Magnus told me he was just incredible in the studio, first take kind of guy. Name of the album is 'Souls' and I believe it will be out October if you'd like to check it out. Ira Coleman co produce and plays bass. A couple of top musicians from Brazil. Recorded by Paul Antonelli at the Cluhouse (Rhinebeck, NY), that guy made my job very pleasant. A note regarding testing different compressors on a given source. Doing that on Gregory's voice is pretty pointless as he sounds so d*mn good whatever you do!

Thanks for chiming in Frank! Yes, the nvelope stays. Such a cool tool. Just now I had an hour to play with the AnaMod. Tested on Gregory Porters voice (really deep and fat soul style voice), a soft/bright soprano voice, arpeggio nylon guitar, strum steel acoustic and electric bass (line). I'm really impressed, even more so considering it's an emulation. I think it's def up to par with the tube compressors I have here. Very sweet tone. The compression 'ballistics' were more or less identical with my Analoguetube 670 recreation, though the AnaMod sounded darker and a bit more muddy, in a nice way. On the sources above, I liked it best on the bright soprano (my wife actually), but the differences to my other comps are really subtle so I still don't know if it's a keeper End of report!
Edit/update: Though very nice, the 660 went back. A heavy hit at my GAS, but I'll try to recover soon...
