Really difficult for me to not grab the Clariphonic and and VBC, but with no AAX64 timeline, I gotta pass. Lexicon has the LXP bundle on sale at Sweetwater for $99 too. Another good deal, but not AAX64. Thanks for the heads up on the Sweetwater special on the Lexicon bundles!

cowboycoalminer Wow, you were there! ENVY! I've listened 5 times so far and getting the chills here too, despite the crappy recording.

cowboycoalminer Man, thanks for directing me to the Time jumpers! I've been YouTubing a little and have to agree. Music doesn't get better than this. Different yes, but not better. Love the casual style of the show combined with the stellar performance. Have never heard Vince as bluesy and fired up as in this clip, specially in the last vocal chorus. I'm more and more thinking I have to make the trip to Nashville pretty soon...

I'm already regretting buying the Claiphonic hastily. I haven't used it yet, but realize I should really just have gotten away from EQ's. I have UAD's Massive Passive, and their Pultec, all the Waves SSL EQ's, in fact, Apple's EQ actually works well, too. I enjoyed the Clariphonic video so much, and it seemed like a magic pill, take two knobs, twiddle, and mixes come to life. I know how that sounds, but it seemed like a good idea. What I should have done is just get the Elysia MuseEQ plug and be done with them all, but I didn't know about it until today.. aarrgghh.. Feel your pain. But is there such thing as 'Get the XXXX gear and be done with them all'?..

Jeeez, thanks for linking that clip!! I'm even a bigger fan now. So... that's The House?
edit: Re the desk, the link inspired to check other Gill clips, and on another clip you can clearly see it's an expanded API 1608 edit2: JK nailed it, The House is the name of Gill's home studio. Confirmed in the YouTube clip I'm checking right now (a 35 min clip made by Premier guitar)

Just got this album. Big Gill fan here, and so impressed with the sound on every album counting from 'Last kiss goodbye' and later. This, no exception btw, was mixed at Blackbird and recorded at 'The House'. I googled but couldn't find anything about The House. Is that something you Nashville guys know anything about?

Tony, thanks for the Serpent tip! Re the eqs I agree with what I believe is the general consensus about these, that LC sounds a bit more natural and perhaps also affects transients less. A few months ago I tested them on a few things. Preferred the LC on snare and electric guitar, preferred the TB on kick (particurarly!), and ac guit. On bass I liked them both in different ways. One quality both share is that they sound great even at +6/+9 boost settings. I guess you've already noticed that with your stack of LCs!

Finally got around to calibrate and play a little with this tonight. Only on kick and snare (rock/pop style) so far. What a great little unit! I'm not an 1176 expert at all but I think it fits the description of a REV A spot on. Compared to my Purple MC77 it sounds a tad bit dirtier and not as full as the MC77. I felt that the MC77 also compressed a bit more effortless. I still have room for a few more 500 modules in my rack so could easily see one more of these. Also had some time playing with my CAPI and TB eqs on kick snare. Winning setup was Kick - TB550A->BAE 10DC, Snare - LC53A->U76. BOOM SMACK!!

Have been waiting for the Hairball kit (transformers, meter etc) for a few days and today it arrived! So finally ready for calibration (tomorrow). Build has gone well, perhaps a little bit more demanding than my previous kits, TBDD chorus, TB550A, LC53A etc. Fewer parts than those kits but a tight design getting everything to fit a 500 module and a special layout with the four PCBs. Still fun as usual and I'm already longing for the next project. Hopefully it will behave and I'll return shortly with impressions. Attachments:

I've used it on drum paralel on every mix since I got it 5yrs ago. Looking for variation now and then, I compare to other comps in my arsenal but always return to the Zener.

tonycamphd Hi Tony! I'm not too fond of building units with anything more than 24V in it. Did the 51X PSU and thought I'd stop there, but a stereo 1176 rev D would be so nice, so I'll probably give it a try sooner or later. Would it be easy for you to help me do a shopping list? - Hairball has complete kits for mono units now but not for stereo, so I guess all generic components like resistors, caps etc would be ordered via the Mouser carts that Hairball provides? - Hairball has a kit for stero builds but without switches, pots, XLR, IEC and no main boards. So is it easy for you to do a shopping list for the latter? (except the stuff below) I believe Hairball provides all except the XLR and IEC stuff? - Faceplate/case from Dan I guess - Stereo power supply PCB from MNATS More?

BTW, onlymeeee helped me adding a HPF to the build, so I had to drill an extra hole in the faceplate and add a few components. Will do a documentation of that little mod when I've got everything together. unit7, in case i didn't mention it, I am very definitely interested to see the HPF details!! Here's the HPF mod for the NV73: groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=54228.0And I also managed to use the cool ELMA knobs by not using the nut for the Greyhill switch (compensated by adding two screws on the faceplate) and by getting a new attenuator pot with longer shaft. I know it's not looking stellar, but good enough for me! Attachments:

I use a Manley Vari-Mu - between 1-2 db reduction - into a Retro 2A3. I mix into it, I believe that is essential, you can't just slap it on a finished mix unless you want to ruin it. I also leave the rest to mastering. The important thing for me is to use the comp for the sound, not for volume, again, that's for mastering. Exactly my approach too, except that I rarely compress more than 1dB. Same kind of gear setup too, Analoguetube into Cartec.

Very interested in your thoughts 'unit7'. I have two Actions and want to add two of these but I am not quite ready to pull the trigger. Sure, I'll report when it's built and tested a little!

...the expression 'Put up your dukes' I'm currently working on a cover of Pat Benatar's 'Hit me with your best shot' and we did some BVs today. We kind of got the meaning of the lyric in the bridge (Put up your dukes, let's get down to it) but not fully...

"(no HP filters though 8)" No, but for a moment I though about joking with Dave and ask how to add a sidechain function... But regarding the extensive communication explaining that NV73 HPF for an idiot like me, I'm not sure he would appreciate it

Just ordered this, including the Mouser chart and Hairball parts kit. Really curious how it will compare to my Purple MC77s. Anyone here completed the build? Comments? P.S. perhaps move this thread to DIY instead? D.S

Can't comment on your question because I know far to little about the CM scene. But really liked what I heard on iTunes samples, so I just ordered a CD. Is it Vince Gill singing harmony on he third track?

Yeah, in this subjective business, for me when people claim things in an over confident way there's a limit when I stop listening. That combined with the number of posts, promoting the company with the logo, and being a moderator... Pretty tasteless imo. TL is far more low key in that sense, and a really nice guy.
