My buddy ended up with a vintage 1604. He had previously owned a dif 1604, 2488 and 3232 over the years so he was very familiar with that "sound". We both thought the 1608 was great but still preferred the something special that the vintage desks have. It's hard to explain but sorta like comparing my EF14 47 to my VF14M 47. Both are stellar and get you that sought after sound but the VF version just has that little something extra special about it.
Roundbadge has one as well and talked about modding a few channels as an experiment but don't know if he ever did it. I'll ping him and see if he has any thoughts. IIRC he sold a vintage 3232 when he brought in his 1608.

Balanced busing for one thing. The vintage is unbalanced. Also no 2510's in the old stuff. I have never been inside a 1608 to poke around but did spend a few hours on one with a buddy who was looking to buy. It's just a different sonic vibe.

The 1608 is new. The old version is a 1604. Both great but two different sonic worlds of API.

So, I have just uploaded some Heider FD312 clips we captured of Whitney Duncan and Clint Lagerberg at Clint's Mill Road Studio on Nov 1st. Whit was sangin' and Clint was on elec gtr. The track "Skinny Dippin" is an older song that Whitney wrote a few years back. I recall her performing it when she was on Nashville Star back in 2007. We have some killer vid for this session that was captured and is being edited together by Rob and Tom at Rack-N-Roll Audio. Hopefully that will be finished soon. In the meantime.....here are the raw wav files. Signal chains are as follows: Whitney->my vintage Telefunken 251->Heider FD312 (HiZ in, no pad)->Apogee Symphony Clint->Duesenberg Fullerton->3rd Power Dream Weaver (American side/blonde)->3rd Power Switchback 1x12 cab (Celestion gold)->Miktek PM10->Heider FD312 (HiZ and Pad in, preamp @ 12 o'clock, fader @ -4dB)->Apogee Symphony Whitney-Duncan-Heider-Session_VOCAL-48KWhitney-Duncan-Heider-Session_GUITAR-48KWhitney-Duncan-Heider-Session_STEREO-48KLet me know what you think! Cheers, Jeff

I saw her open for Tim and Faith in the round when she was 16 (IIRC). It was Taylor on ac gtr, a girl on fiddle and some dude on banjo. There was no question she would be a superstar. She is without a doubt a very charismatic entertainer. Not my fav female vocalist but I also think she has gotten better over the years.
I like how she talks about Big Machine as an infant label. Haha, look at them now!!!

Thx Tony. Randy is amazing for sure. Check him at allcredits.com. He has some good ones. Also Grammy nominated and an all around great guy. He's also a member here.
The files with JK are short and already up. Skim back a few posts and you will find the link.

We have more clips in the works. Scott is cutting up a long file into 3 segments now of Randy Kohrs melting a resonator gtr, which is far more interesting to my ears than an acoustic. It was stereo mic'ed with some Peluso's. We did the same 3 HiZ-Pad combination settings as we did with the JK vox.
I am also near to posting some elec crunch gtr and female vox files. Clint Lagerberg on gtr and the talented Whitney Duncan on vox.
Hopefully before the weekend on the above mentioned clips. We have video that accompanies both sessions but that will not be up for a little bit yet. Rack-N-Roll Rob and Tom are still collecting more vid around Nashville. Our very own JK will make a rare video appearance too!

My analogy is this, I can shift my car into reverse flying 80mph down the highway but I don't do it. The Heider FD312 is my first offering in a fully built unit. From my viewpoint, the 500 series is a no-brainer. There is no UL or CE certification to deal with and stocking all the parts/fully built units takes up way less space. I would never say never but I really don't ever see myself manufacturing this pre in a 1RU. If you checked one out, I'd like to think you'd say this is a great reason to go 500, even though you are not a fan of the format.

Thanks cowboy. I am very happy with the tonal possibilities of just 2 pushbutton switches.
I am mostly glad this "vocalist" kept his clothes on. LOL

So, I was in Nashville last week and had the pleasure of hand delivering the first batch of Heider FD312 pre's to Rob at Rack-N-Roll. Throughout my week there, I was able to visit many studios to personally demo the FD312 as well as visit while Rob and Tom captured some great video interviews of current users. We will have many cool things to watch, listen to and download coming out over the next few weeks. One of my stops was to hang with Sal Oliveri at his overdub studio, The Ice House in Franklin TN. Our beloved admin John Kennedy also came by to grace us with his sheer presence and vocal sangin' ability. In running thru the options on the Heider FD312, we of course chose to record some clips for comparisons. There are 3 wav files in the zip. The mic was John's CV4 that has been modded and hot rodded by the mic magus Shannon Rhoades of MicRehab. The A/D was the Avid HD Omni. The 3 different preamp settings are listed in the file names. In Sal's room on his Proacs, we all thought the "+HiZ" was the best sounding version. Of course there was no music bed but you will at least get the idea of how versatile the combination of a few pushbutton switches can be. The Fader was at 0 for the first 2 clips and +4 for the "+HiZ+Pad" version. We also increased the preamp gain to help make up for the Pad attenuation. Increasing those 2 settings is also part of the increased color. I think it really shows a wide swing of possible options. Many thanks to both Sal and John! app.box.com/s/hswhw27jk59m3ims1up1

It will be made.....sooner or later. As JK says, I am swamped. I honestly have not had the spare time to even look at it in the last few months. The store has been super busy which is awesome, but leaves me very little time for R&D. When I get back to it, next up is a little rework to the main input channel PCB's. That will be a major hurdle when it's nailed down tight.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, there is video of Glyn Johns talking about how he likes to back the fader down 10dB or so and increase the preamp gain for added harmonic content. That is how Scott and I setup the VP28's for Ben Sesar when we did the video with him. Glyn is not talking about my pre's specifically but consoles in general I think. I know he is familiar with vintage API's boards. I guess the moral of the story is, there are a bunch of sonic possibilities with a true 2 stage preamp. Still kinda odd to think how few are on the market these days......

The 12dB of gain is "built into" the fader booster circuit. The fader is just attenuating it back to unity. I think using the full gain of the booster really makes things sound mean and a little more in your face (aggressive) than usual. Its kind like the "bad-ass" control. No combo of settings will hurt anything so feel free to experiment. Well, I would not run line level signals while in mic mode but besides that it's all free game!

Swapping the larger BD transistors and/or having them rotated 180 is the most common problem.

Check the diodes for proper orientation. If you skim the opamp build threads at groupdiy.com you will probably find the answer as a number of folks have had similar issues.
