Indeed. As long as the supply delivers good, clean DC with enough current to do the job at hand, there should be no issues.

Even Neve is doing modules in the 500 format these days!

Well, I have seen the different threads around on the subject but normally never say anything. The API 500 format was originally only for the consoles. The consoles were designed with bipolar +/-16V PSU's. A 312 card in the console running on +/-16V rails will sound exactly the same as a 312 card in any standalone 500 series rack that is also running on +/-16V rails. The circuitry before and after the 312 card in the console and how the card is racked for standalone use will effect it more. Good clean DC is the same as long as the voltages are the same. Increasing the supply voltage to +/-18V for example will increase headroom. In conclusion, as far as API style gear goes, 1RU, 500 series or running on a bench supply will operate and sound the same. I should add that the PSU in all situations needs to have enough current available. A 312 draws very little current though and nowhere near the 130mA VPR 500 series spec.
Since the 500 format is +16V and -16V, you actually have 32V of DC at hand to work with. Simple math will tell you that is more than single ended 24V. Clever designers like Colin from AML have no issues getting their Neve style designs to work great in a 500 series rack. I have no idea why Mr. Tanner doesn't want to mess with it but I am sure he has his reasons.
I am not super familiar with the Helios stuff but IIRC they do use opamps but the discrete components are all on the main PCB, not a smaller block type sub-assembly.

My only question now is: do I buy a second Heider or two VC528's? A simple answer: "Yes!!"

Oops. I would still use a 15+15 toroid though.

I just purchased a supply from five fish audio. With a 120VA (18+18) Avel Lindberg transformer Model # Y236453 you can supply 3.33 amps to the modules, which should be enough for 8 or more. I ordered cards from classic API and am planning on hand wiring to the xlr and power supply in the case, or designing my own pcb and self-etching. Will have to make the case myself. Just thought I'd chime in. The 18+18 toroid is a little high. You'd be better of with a 15+15 if you wanna end up with 16V DC. I do have new rack kits coming in but not until just after the new year.

So, here we have the first installment in the short series of Heider FD312 promo vid's. This was shot at Clint Lagerberg's Mill Road Studio in Nashville with the gracious performance of Whitney Duncan.

We are launching a Heider FD312 ad campaign starting in next months TapeOp. Adam Kagan has a pair of them and is doing a review as well. Not sure what issue that will print in. These testimonials will be used but are not in the first ad. Just for fun, here are what some of the early users are reporting. "The Heider is an instant classic. It brings a killer character to everything I plug into it." - F. Reid Shippen "I'm not sure what is different about this pre....maybe its the two output transformers but it makes things sound like records I love." - Bill Reynolds, Band of Horses "I used the Heider in a vocal chain shootout and it was instantly the clear winner....full and exciting sounding!" - Ben Fowler "When it comes to recording drums, the Heider FD312 is simply stellar. It's punchy as hell with tons of character leaving nothing to be desired." - Russ Long

Tom from RnR has a classic Music Row story that he will never forget. After using the pre's for about a week, Buster called Rob and told him to stop by and pick up the modules for someone to checkout. They are literally only a few blocks away from each other. So, Rob asks Tom to head over the Allentown Studios to pick up the Heiders. The door is always locked so you need to ring the bell to get in. Tom rings the bell and Garth opens the door and says "Hey, I'm Garth. Come on in! There's cold water in the fridge if you're thirsty!".

Well, yes his staff engineer Buster Allen is a friend of mine. As soon as Buster saw me start talking about the Heider pre on FB, he messaged me and said he was super excited and stoked to check it out. Buster actually got to demo the first of the production units for a week or so. They were doing final overdubs at that time so the Heider pre's are sprinkled across all of those discs (I believe). I will see if I can get him to chime in a little. I know he is super busy. Besides being Garth's staff engineer, he sells parts for 3M tape machines and bought all of the Sphere parts from the previous owner. Duncan bought the name but Buster got all the goodies!
I also DVR'ed that live Vegas show. I must say I have never been a GB fan. Not that I disliked him, I just never bought any of his music. I'd hear cuts on the radio and think yeah, ok, that's fine. But....that Vegas show blew me away. Garth is a serious force. What a great entertainer and an amazing vocalist. He can sing anything and not just do it ok but be mind blowing amazing. I was addicted to watching that show. I kinda sipped it in and savored every second of it. That prompted me to buy the box set which is also great.
BTW, Buster was in Vegas and worked on the audio for broadcast that night.
