Its a dirty job, but someone's got to do it LOL! Absolutely it is, sucking in the spit from the mouthpiece for example is recommended. Gotta keep that thing clean. It's a very challenging instrument and surprisingly loud, I am taking a day off from practice because my ears are ringing. Sax was my first love. Played for about 20 years then stopped. Been a long time since. Playing and holding sustained notes for the first 15 minutes of practice does wonders.

Loving the black friday purchases i made.
Lancaster amp sim, eli arouser and ampeg v4b have really made a significant difference to the options i have mixing.
To be honest with those 3 plugs alone i can do anything creative itb i need.
How is everyone else travelling

looking for suggestions for an active splitter that allows me to take a feed from a guitar pedal board to my preamps instrument in. Not really looking for a DI.
the N-Audio Isolated guitar splitter / Di box looks the goods however with exchange rates/duties/postage etc it's getting up towards $400 aud.
looking for cheaper options.

I passed on every Black Friday software deal because I pre-ordered a Hydrasynth. It's been difficult because some of them are so cheap, but there's nothing that truly does something unique that my existing plugs can't do already. The only thing I keep going back to is the Waves Vocal Rider, but even then I know that I can get better results doing it by hand. waves vocal rider is a great plug. i'm not a massive fan of waves plugs except this one is a must have for me.

I got a follow up email from josh today to check the mic arrived and all was ok. Thanks josh.
That prompted me to plug the mic in and test it. I must admit i bought the 47fet for a specific project so hadnt given it a spin yet. Project is next weekend.
Not being much of a singer i did some spoken word, tested the off axis rejection etc.
Initial thought was how nice the lower part of my voice sounded through this mic. Sort of round and warm with clear and focused mids. There is something very reassuring with the tone of the mic. Not sure how else to describe it at this early stage.
Also tried speaking at 90 deg and 180 deg and the rejection sounds promising.

my shopping list looks to be
se v7 lewitt 550dm mbho mbd219 telefunken m81
i need an sm7b at some point but for now borrow one now and then.
i've gone off vintage dynamic mics. i've had a real bad run. they cost 2-3 time more because they are vintage and tend to be hit an miss at best. newer dynamic mics are dirt cheap all things considered.

that looks good too but i'm looking for something that can do standalone without the pc.
something i can hook up to the input of my gear at -40, -10, +4 @ 1k on the bench and then use a multimeter or daw to measure and adjust. most cheap signal generators i have found allow adjustment of freq but not mic/line level gain options.

Latest build. This was well outside my comfort zone as it needs calibration. Really not my thing. So once built and armed with a behringer cable tester and a daw i managed to figure out how to follow the caliberation guide. In the new year i plan to build a few more. Great easy to follow kit.

being an albini fan boy i've pretty much read every thing ever published and watched every video he's done. there are also a bunch of vids they put out as electrical audio. also had the opportunity to ask him some newb question at gigs seeing shellac. interestingly he is constantly evolving his recording methods and is using other preamps including the neotek. In interviews, he does push back against the idea that he has a sound and points out he records lots of different bands with different sounds..... so, where am i going with this. i tried for ages to copy "his sound", same mics, same techniques. i couldn't get it. very recently started a new project, a friend in germany sent me some digital drum tracks for the project. i opened up my favourite albini records and set about copying that sound with itb reverb, (which i've never done before). turns out that the sound is the room sound. i managed to get close with an itb reverb to the point where i saved it under the name electrical and am using it for the album. while listening to bunches of songs and really analyzing them, i started to notice they all sound very different. it can be subtle at times too but it's definitely there. what does sound the same is the room. so i'll put it out there that his sound is just the room he records in and that he likes a roomy sound on drums. a few weeks back i fell across a new band called credentials. their latest album blew me away and sounded like it was recorded at electrical audio. but it was recorded at howl street recordings. props to howl street. such an great sounding album. probably fan boy them now too. recordingstudiorockstars.com/rsr206-steve-albini-how-to-mix-a-record/recording rock stars also have an episode with Rob Schnapf... great to listen to.

props to the creation audio labs guys,
their mw1 is epic!
i also used a soundcraft ghost they modified for about 7 years and it never skipped a beat and sounded excellent. if we had any issues which was extremely rare they would sort things asap. and i'm in another country.
