My "mutt" Princeton Reverb is a 1980 pull boost (gasp) that's been gone over with a Deluxe output transformer, Kendrick Black Frame 10" speaker, and recently freshened up by Fazio Electric (she's the best in LA). Amp was $450 20 years ago, and my '74 Princeton was $250 on eBay... The Princeton has a Weber C10Q that sounds nice with the lower volume, and I had a male-female speaker cable made to run the Princeton speaker as an extension cab, but also will plug it into my Tremolux cab loaded with Weber AlNiCo 10s. Greg - your RI Vibrochamp already has a 1/4" speaker out - definitely fun to try on larger cabs, and you don't have to swap out the old RCA for a 1/4" jack like on the originals (total worthwhile swap FWIW). Is it possible to run a combo as an extension cab without disconnecting the amp? Didn’t think that was ok. Would love to do that if it is possible

Can i read into your review that the HB has less mid forward push?
Im preferring true to the source in this case.

Am considering a pair of the hairball comps. Primarily because im chasing a fet linkable comp in 500 series thats affordable.
Wondering how they sound.
My only reference in hardware world are the purple actions.

I am very much onboard with tracking 2 amps.
Last session I had the guitarist with his pedals into his ac30 then split the signal with a submarine pickup on his guitar and ran that into my ac15 with a matamp flavoured boost pedal. '
His amp had u47fet centre and sm57 mid way from cone and off axis. I pushed the bass eq a bit on his amp. The submarine went to my amp doing a cleaner overdrive with more pick attack and chime with a Serrano 87. Hands down best distorted guitar tone I’ve captured with loads of options.
would love to try a blue speaker extension cab or another ac15 so I can dual amp my own setup.
A fenderesque amp prob would provide additional options too. Been looking at champs of late.

Not familiar with those tubes.
I put a set of Watford valves in mine and a better reverb tank. Kept the stock greenback because it sounds great., The valves made a very nice difference. Have tested my ac15 against other stock ac15’s with friends and everyone involved has said they preferred mine for a sweater more 3d tone so I guess the valves have been the difference.
I’ve used an ac30 for recording a fair bit and I prefer the ac15 by a large amount. I’m convinced I can get any tone I need in a very short time. In a session recently we were going from doom rock to more classic rock tones, then cleaner chimes with a combination of boost pedals. There is a sweet spot with the gain staging . that’s easy to find and I haven’t found on marshalls or fenders.
at the last session we plugged in a bass vi through a rat clone and immediately found the best fuzzy bass sound I managed to record so far. Granted by this stage I had the output on 10 and started freaking the speaker would blow.
I’m amazed at how many used ac15’s there are locally. Always with the same comment. “Tried Vox but it’s not my thing”…what are people doing? Probably getting too hung up on the top boost channel.
Am thinking of getting another and putting a 50w bass speaker in it and one more to run as an extension cab with an alternative speaker like a blue.

Yep. My ac15 love runs deep. How cool is this amp. So easy 6to dial in exceptional tones in seconds and always seems to record well.
Guitar, bass anything goes.

I’m coming to New Zealand..lol That said, even at $5300 it’s a complete ripoff. Where do they go with this. 10k.. Good news is plenty of 1176 options for much less. I remember when the UA comps were a couple of grand and I thought expensive but it’s original. Now I’m just shaking my head knowing they’ve priced themselves out of my market. It's probably the only thing that's cheaper over hear. haha To true. Was your price rrp or discount by the shop. There are a few shops here saying $6200 rrp with discount at $4500 but when you look they are out of stock or only have 1 or 2.

+1 for the Serrano for me too. My Serrano just work in any position. I kinda stopped thinking about if they are the right choice and just place them and move on. All of my good mics are like that. I don't need to fuss with placement.
If this is personal use I don’t think you need a big name on the badge. Fair enough if you are talking 1970’s u87 but I can’t help but think that the big brands are running on name alone these days and pumping the price to protect resale value as that’s the last thing they have going for them. The mid to upper level clones are better than modern equivalents for a lot less money. Buy 2 for stereo micing.
p.s a lot of great ears talking up the gefell. Pretty hard to ignore that

The way UA shamelessly overcharges the customer on 1176s and LA2As tells me all I need to know about the company's ethics and way of doing business. Yup, this is precisely how I feel.

So many tastey pieces memtioned. There's a Foote p3s selling in my local area. Will keep an eye on pricing however will probably push the button on a stam sa4000. If it doesnt speak to me during tracking it'll be used for mixing so not a loss in my current setup.
A few others have mentioned it, and like them for me a tracking comp must be very easy to use. One reason i like tracking through jlm la500a is its kind of in auto mode in its default settings. I only need to look at gain staging which results in a quick setup time and doesnt allow me to get myself into trouble.

The d comp Looks pretty damn good. 2.5k aud……that’s going on the list. I could buy some more JLM la500a modules which are pretty good for tracking. . As a what if. What if I’m just looking for more of a console sound. Another option is some neve line amps or vp28’s

Not ever really looking for overt compression/pumping, but just more polishing the sound and making it sound more like a record from the start. Because that makes everyone perform better, thus making a better record. This is where I’m looking to go too

Yeah i think you raise a solid point. Sometimes just a bit of circuitry to tighten up the lows a bit can make it sound more punchy.
An eq to run through may also be an option. Im not looking for saturation per se.

Ive got a plug chain i like that does good things. A buss eq sim followed by tape sim.
Am starting to add a few tracking pieces to my setup.

My overheads mic setup is a pair of ksm137 in x/y. Thats the basis of the drum sound i use then i spot mic kick and snare. Recently sm7b on snare and generally 52a on kick.
Punk and heavier music. For acoustic stuff i dont use comp.
So i'm looking for mid level options for a compressor to track through to add some punch. I used to have access to a dbx buss comp which i liked. am now looking for something more in my budget to do a similar thing.
Stam SA4000-5 is one option. Wondering what other options people would consider.
P.S would even consider a box of transformers or an eq. Doesnt need to be a comp.
