Spent the last two weeks mixing my first full length album here for the band "Shadow Witch"
Everything works~! Imagine that. Haha
Would have been much quicker, but it was a un-attended mix session, which of course takes a lot longer when 5 people have to all listen to the mixes and chime in, get back to me, and then I do whatever changes are requested, and then we move on.
But all in all, we did pretty damn good for the actual time worked.
I guess the next big hurdle here, will be to cut some basics, which requires another set of gear / signal paths, that needs to be rung out, and tested.
Getting there slowly .... but surely.

John send a copy to me, I'm setting up my new space in Hartsville, and need to work on a few things to get the room in check... Would love to have some unfamiliar tracks to work on!
It could be a good thing for both of us?

In my 49 years of recording rock bands, the things that matter most are:
Decent preamps, And Mics. after that comp / limiters, and then EQ's.
And you are correct, the differences between mic pre amps are subtle, and not worth loosing sleep over. Trust me I Know....once you get to a certain level anyone of them can and will sound good. Hey I even made a few great records on the original Mackie 8 bus consoles, but I had great mics!

The only mic (he owns his own) Daryl Hall has used for the last 20 years on his recordings.

The original, is quite an amazing piece of kit.
You can do quite a bit of compressing, with NO artifacts, and it sounds absolutely beautiful, and the track will be under complete control. It has a "gained" a great reputation for a reason!

When I'm leaving the house to do a small session, either live or in someone else's place, it's always my Metric Halo UNL-8.
The mic pres in that unit sound great, and I have to make NO Excuses for it to the clients. Every session I've recorded with that unit have been Great. It's quite a step up from the normal, everyday prosumer interfaces that are very common today! A bit more costly, but if that's your only mic pre, then it's totally worth it, cause the conversion itself is amazing.

I started my first studio in 1972, and to this day...
NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, will ever equal the visceral impact, or emotion, of a artist (band) performing live in the studio together.
And when they get the take, man, it's a feeling like no other!
You're literally high, and it's palpable, everyone in the room feels it, not just the musicians!
Probably why I'm still doing it...because it ain't for the $$$ that's for sure.
SIMPLY AMAZING.

I just moved to TN. from CT. but was located only 5 miles from "Lime Rock Park" and would see Tony, and the crew all the time. He had their Porsche, and I had my Ferrari. Lots of fun racing around the track, with NO FLASHING LIGHT BEHIND YOU! Haha
Good times, but that was a few years ago. Haven't seen him, or the team for a while?

Today I wired 14 of the 24 amps I have here in my place, for A/C, and then wired their outputs to my custom amp bay!
That said, with some of the very early vintage amps from the 50's it's very hard to break the connection to the speakers as it is part of their design.
So when using those little amps, I use them just as they were meant to be, with internal speakers and a mic. And for live recording off the floor you really can't beat them. I do love them, just as they are especially for intimate live off the floor sessions, they are just the ticket!
But if something requires a bit more volume... The 2 x ISO CABINETS I had built for me about 15 years ago, are a lifesaver, especially while tracking in a one room situation. Couldn't live without them!
And the fact I can swap out speakers in literally 1 minute, makes them even more valuable! Just another amazing tool in my arsenal!
After that was done, I then I ran the all wires for all 8 of the Furman HRM - 16 Headphone amplifier boxes. This way every musician, has their own mixer!
Haven't test anything as yet...but at least it's all wired! Haha Now weather or not it'll work???
Well that's for another day. I'll find out soon enough.
A lot of work, moving a studio, (or two) !
More to come.......

I've only moved into my new space 10 days ago... It's literally been hell. But, I'm getting close. Right now it's really about putting things in place...and then slowly wiring it up, and ringing it out. But that said, I took a few quick pics tonight, after wiring all day. Trying to recreate the vibe my places were always know for. Gonna take some doing, as I just arrived, but it's doable. As long as everything works as it should, the vibe of a room is one of the most critical things for clients, (and me toooo!!)

Well, I've been here 1 week as of today. Still trying to figure out where to put all this stuff? Funny, I sold so much, but there is soooooooooo much more. It's crazy all the stuff you acquire over 45 years of doing this. Anyhow, at this point, what I plan to use is now all wired for power, but no INS / OUTS wired to bays or anything like that. Just A/C Lots more work to do. But getting closer.

I did this many times all over the world. Simply put...I finally gave up trying to fly with gear, due to the hassles involved.
But instead, would pack and ship the gear to the studio (place) where I'd be working ahead of time. Worked like a charm, never had a problem. And would do the same when done, ship it all back home.

"Now comes the hard part, putting a good chunk of my studio in storage while they finish building my house."
Hey Vincent, I've had my stuff stored since Jan 8th, in 3 climate controlled storage rooms, 2 garages, and one barn, for my upcoming move to TN. I can't put into words what this has been like for me, especially at my age. Haha As a matter of fact, I have the first 26 foot truck coming on Thursday to unload two of the rooms, and drive that equipment down to Hartsville TN.
It's a drag, trust me...as this is the second move in three years. But it will get done, and then you're all set! For me, this is the last time I'm moving my studio!
Good luck, hang in there, as it'll be over soon enough~! Keep us posted.

Leaving in about 1 hour today, to head on down with a van full of stuff from the house. Having a 16 foot "POD" container dropped off on Saturday, so lot's of unloading to do for a few days. Then back up to NY, to load the big truck with all the studio gear.
Then maybe, just maybe, I can start setting up, and getting back to what matters! Haha

Haha... You guys are too much!
Thanks all!
Just booked a 26 foot Penske truck to move all my gear down at the end of July.
Leaving on the 4th to take most of the house stuff down first. Get the keys, change the locks, install alarm, open bank account, have all utilities put in my name, etc, etc, etc...
