You can put your uadX authorizations on your computer and not deal with the cloud, but ya, lots of questions about UA connect How do you do that? I'd love to get that connect thing off my comp!

nick8801I think the Chandler is a bit expensive for most people for a 2 band eq and I guess it hasn't really caught on, plus there are just so many 500 eqs now. But for overall sweetening it's great. It never makes things sound small or eqed. Kind of the same deal with the Electrodyne. 2 bands, but hard to mess up. I’d love to be able to shoot those 2 out.

That thing is glorious. Probably more than I need for a mono channel strip though. I think if I was getting close to that price point I would grab a Curve Bender. That' still my favorite eq ever. I use the Chandler 500 eq all the time for tracking. Yeah it's limited but I find it's really easy to enhance the source for broad strokes during tracking. I love the 800 on stand up bass. 4,2 or 10k on vocals. Slight bass boost on kick drum and 500 cut. I usually boost 4db max just because it's so broad, and it never sounds Eqed. It's not as radical a shaper as a Pultec but it's perfect for tracking IMO. The Maag is cool but like most people I only really use the airband so I'd only get the eq2 version for tracking. It sounds great on vocals but I have to admit I'm more of a mid guy than an airy vocal kind of guy. That’s good to hear…kind of hard to find any info on the Chandler. I may throw it back into the mix as an option!

….have a pair of Maag Eq’s or a pair of Pultecs? Mostly for sweetening tracks and buss work. Also kinda interested in the Electrodynes. I think the Maags would be the most versatile, plus I like the new black faceplate in the 500 series. Neither, I'd rather have this as it will cover both those styles of EQ plus way more :-) * Air Band * Baxandall shelves * Passive inductor mids * Special sauce Vic Keary Precence band * Pultec style low end cut/boost. .... in one glorious sounding stereo tube EQ. Amazing for tracking too! www.thermionicculture.com/index.php/products/the-swift-detailI went for the slightly more expensive transformer balance o/p version. That thing is glorious. Probably more than I need for a mono channel strip though. I think if I was getting close to that price point I would grab a Curve Bender. That' still my favorite eq ever.

Spent the evening last night playing with some of my UAD eq's. Setup the Pultec, Maag, Helios, 1073, Curve Bender, Harrison, and Motown on acoustic guitar tracks and drum tracks. Pultec is obviously beautiful, but sometimes I really want to shape the mids a bit more, so I think I'll just stick to my ITB Pultecs. As much as I love opening up the top with a Pultec, I don't know if I really want that in physical format. Maag was kind of uninspiring. Yes, the air band is awesome, but the other bands don't really wow me or bring out anything special to my ears. So, that's out of the running. I've always dug the Harrison but compared to the others it's a little too vanilla for my tastes. The Hitsville was cool, but those fixed eq points are just not my thing. Plus, there's no 500 version, so that's out too. I generally reach for my 1073 eq's when working in the box so I pulled that up against a demo of the V2 Helios. Gotta say, the Helios edged it out! The Neve had a harder sound in the mids and highs. The low end is more controllable on the 1073, especially with the filter and selectable low bands, but the mids and highs are just better on the Helios. My favorite was the Curve Bender. Man, everytime I hear that thing it just sounds right. Unfortunately, the rack unit is way out of my budget, and the 500 series version only has a presence band and two low frequencies to choose from. Not exactly the amount of bending that I would like to have available from that circuit. So...basically just going to save up and get one of the H2 500 eq's to pair with the TG Opto in a little 3 space rack. Should be a really cool British flavored channel strip. Vintage EMI tube > Helios Eq > TG channel Opto compression. How can I go wrong with something like that?

Just browsing eq's and I think I have to throw the Helios and the Phoenix Gyraf in the mix here too. Basically, looking to use as part of a channel strip I'm building. So, this would really be used to get an almost finished sound into the computer. I already have a compressor I'm pretty much sold on (Chandler Opto). My pre is the Chandler Redd47.

Have plugins of both, and I definitely reach for the Pultecs more. Anyone here ever use the Electrodyne eq’s? I used to have an Electrodyne preamp, and it had a beautiful sound. Huge transformers in that thing! Thinking the eq’s might give me some of that vibe, plus I could add some presence and punch with them. Btw, I’m almost certainly talking 500 series here.

See, I almost pulled the trigger on the 10 for 299 the other day, but why is UA so confusing now? I have the connect thing, but native doesn’t come with the regular versions? Only some? Email codes and vouchers. It’s annoying. Plus I only really want 5 or so of those 10.

Anyone here ever play with Ozone’s vintage tape? Not a cool graphic like my UA stuff, but definitely sounds really good!

For what it's worth, I never turn on Sonarworks anymore. I hated the change in tone to my speakers. Plus it cut level so I could never accurately gage level. Did it help with mixing? Sometimes? I definitely enjoy working more without it.

I also have this singer I'm working with who wanted a song produced by the end of January. We initially connected on Soundbetter in early December. Tried to set up some phone calls to hash out what they were looking for, expectations, etc, but pretty much radio silence. Gave them my rate and they funded the job. Started work and sent some initial ideas. Got minimal feedback weeks later that it was "great!". Finished up the instrumental arrangement as best I could without their input and never heard back. Ended up messaging Soundbetter because I had put in like a few days work doing the arrangement and I wanted to get paid. Eventually heard back from the singer that they could come by and do vocals. Vocals came out great, spent several sessions mixing and dialing it all in. Radio silence again. Finally heard back weeks later with, "Vocals are too wet like underwater telephone". Umm ok. I dried up the vocals for them, kept working on the song, and sent them an initial master mp3 several days ago and said I could do one more round of mix edits if they want. Nothing. At this point I just want to finish up. The long breaks in between are annoying because I'm a tweaker, so every couple of days I'll pop on the track and go, oh, I could probably lower the kick a hair, or the bass is too loud, etc. It's probably fine, but that's just the way I am. I'm sure I'll hear back in a week or something, but my artistic brain likes to move past unfinished work before I can start new stuff. The song is really cool too. Can't wait to share it when it's all approved, but this might be the longest process I've even been through on one song.

I get anxiety sending rough mixes to people I'm working with because they're always judging unfinished work against full on productions. I always use the "molding clay" analogy, but people are so used to immediate results in today's world, they don't seem to get it. It's like, chill out and trust the process. Also, if you want to sound like Taylor Swift, go hire Jack Antonoff and Serban Ghenea. Oh wait, what's your budget? 500 bucks. Cool.

I've used the modern xlii in a bunch of different studios. Trumpet, vocals, percussion. I always love the sound I hear on playback. I know it doesn't get a ton of love, but I've never once heard it and gone, man that could be better. Always seems to work in a very flattering way. I also used to have an Se T2 and I thought it was a little thin sounding.

I do a similar thing, but I don't think I've ever turned 35hz all the way up. I don't trust my monitoring that much!

That's an old Andy Wallace trick. Cranking 40hz on an EQ then using HPF after. It causes a lot of harmonics of the 40hz to pop up in the pass band while any fundamentals around 40hz are cut off since nobody listens to music down there. I'm not sure if the WA73 has the filters after or before the EQ bands but it would make a difference if it were. Oh yeah, I remember seeing a video on that back in the day.

Cranking 35hz is interesting. What are you monitoring on? I would take the track out to my car or something and make sure the bass isn't totally exploding below where you can hear in your studio. Even with a hi-pass engaged, lots of those frequencies still exist.

I am glad that you are firing things back up. I have always enjoyed the recordings that you have shared and look forward to hearing what you are up too. Thanks so much! Really appreciate that. I’ve done a bunch of mixing/mastering for people, as well as some remote trumpet recordings, but producing this track has really reignited my need to record original music.

Used to have a bunch of really cool preamps. Covid and a baby kind of slowed down my recording so I ended up clearing house and just using the pres in my Lynx. Just did a song for a someone and experimented using a DBX 286s that I talked about in another thread. It was cool, but now that the song is done, I’m finding it kind of meh overall. So I’ve been tossing around the idea of getting one really good pre since I only ever really record one thing at a time. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted a 1073 variant, or something tube. Tube wise I was kind of torn between the Redd and a Weight Tank 72. Wanted something that could be a little more aggressive if I wanted so I just ordered the Redd! Not much else to say here, just super excited and wanted to share!

I had a topping amp that stopped working. Liked the sound and it was cheap so I bought another. Turned it on one day and it sparked and started smoking. I’d stay away.

Yeah so the mint and cocoa are going back. They definitely add color, but way too much in the mids for my tastes. The pepper is awesome though.

I’ll second(or 5th?) echo boy, but yeah, UAD Ampex does some cool stuff too even though it’s a lot of processing power for a slapback.

Oh yeah! Forgot to mention tonal balance and insight in my last post. Great tools. I use RX as well occasionally. Spectral shaper is excellent. Love it on harsh strings and vocals. Mouth de-click really saved the day on a very “clicky” singer once. Never been a fan of de-noise, but it does work in small doses. Some of the more Heavy handed stuff is better to do in the actual app as opposed to opening the plugin. Anyway, great stuff, depending on how you use it. Could I survive without it? Yes. But I could probably make a record with stock Reaper plugs. Actually know a very talented guy who does. Laptop, stock reaper stuff, and KRK monitors. Ears over gear always.

Still waiting on mint and cocoa to get here, but I got pepper a few days ago. Compared it to my fethead on acoustic guitar with my extinct audio ribbon. Pepper just seemed clearer and like I could hear the difference between each string more. Very cool. I think it adds just a hint of saturation to the peaks. Very cool sounding. Reminds me a bit of BAE 312’s I used to have. It also has a ton of output. Can’t wait to test out the others.
