I'm starting to do some tests. I took the acoustic guitar file that I recorded for the video. Since I had split that signal from my console to record right to digital and tape at the same time, I took the digital file and fed it back to the tape machine at the same levels and everything. The google drive link is below, I've level matched as well as aligned the files, so you can throw them in your DAW and get picky if you want to. There's is definitely a difference, it's a bit subtle but it's there. I couldn't really tell you if I like one more than the other one, at some point I'm going to do this with a whole song and hear the cumulative effects. I think that will be a more useful comparison, but already it's sounding like it's enough to make a difference over an entire songs worth of tracks. I want to say that it could be the converters, but I've done tests where I printed a files through my AD/DA process multiple times and wasn't able to hear a difference. I'm sure load comes into play somehow in all of this, but I'm not smart enough to break that down. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1cQwUZmETqi9hBNMlsuIY5eLSpIxtiaFv?usp=sharingVery cool. I think the straight to tape one sounds just a touch more natural and relaxed? Maybe? That was my first kind of immediate reaction to listening. Looking forward to hearing more of your tape experiments!

I don't know how I bought one of his 47's with the existence of this thread, but a trusted engineer had said it was decent....and the Tape Op review. The communication to get the mic was a total debacle. I was promised a Theirsch capsule and a NOS tube...and a warranty. It arrived looking like UPS had played football with the box. The mic was DOA, and it had neither the Theirsch capsule, and the tube was a $10 PSVANE. There were some of the worst looking solder joints I'd ever seen on the capsule and where it's wires connect to the PCB, and in place of shrink wrap at one location was duct tape. There was one wire dangling and not connected to anything, presumably due to the horrible soldering. I emailed 3 times trying to just get a refund. I called multiple numbers that went nowhere. At this point I'm having my tech see if we can make something usable out of it. Happy to provide pics of the horror inside if anybody still wants some laughs. I’d love to see the pictures!

Alto in Brooklyn did a fantastic job with monitors for me a few years back. Took turns setting up a couple pairs on the console. Even put up a pair of ATC’s that I definitely couldn’t afford, but just wanted me to hear them next to my other options. It was a really fun experience.

I was in a similar situation. I didn't up getting any Helios stuff, but if I was going to, I'd go Iron Age all the way. Pre and EQ in one module. Price is great and every interaction I've had with them as a company has been great. If I was rich, I might grab the reissue stuff, but I'm not and I'm not sure how much better it would actually be. I bought a used Lh95 so I’m sure the H9 sounds great. I’m in the EU so the H2 500 eq is the same price as getting an H9 after paying import duties so I’m not sure which one to get. They both seem very well built Well with the H9, you get the pre and the eq in one unit. Not sure if you need the pre as well, but that makes it a good deal to me.

That’s one of my favorite characteristics of ribbons. They take eq like champs.

dig it for old school vocals too.
How does it compare to a tube mic, regarding 'old school' aesthetic?
It’s different. Much more bandwidth limited sounding. Kinda pushes the midrange forward with a rolled off top. Very creamy sounding.

I honestly wouldn't buy anything! I did a mix recently that just wasn't happening. Plenty of UAD stuff on there. Some SSL plugs, FUSE ect....Wasn't bad, just wasn't coming together the way I wanted. Decided to give the mix a fresh shot on my work computer. All I have at work is Reaper and stock Reaper plugs. Also using a freaking mki scarlett and mki JBL305's. Obviously, I knew the song really well at this point, but I made a mix that sounded equal and better to what I was doing at home on my several thousand-dollar setup. Wish I could go back in time and just make myself learn how to mix better lol. It would have saved me lots of money. Of course, for certain projects, all my fancy gear and plugins come in handy, but for this particular track, simple was the way to go. I feel this way sometimes as well. But the catch is that I only learned how to mix better by building out all these tools and things. Working with real hardware and more complex plugins led me to the sounds and moves that I like... which I can now get pretty close to using pretty much anything as long as it's not straight up awful quality. Oh totally....I know what to shoot for using Reaper plugs now that I have a ton of experience on other plugins and hardware. But still....

Got my second Iron Age LH95 the other day. Such sweet eq's. Used them to "open up" a really nice demo someone sent me to master. It was mixed great, just had that blanket over the speakers thing happening. The LH95's worked perfectly.

Really liking the Audioscape here. Agree with smashlord. The stereo adjust knob is really cool. You can dial in more or less compression with it, and it does seem to alter the tone a bit more.

It’s so important to notice the signs. My brother had a very bad stroke last year. Sending good vibes. Glad you’re ok!

I bought a Redd about two months ago. I haven’t had the opportunity to track an entire project with it yet, but I am enjoying experimenting with it on different sources. Here’s a couple thoughts I have so far….Killer on bass di. Round and punchy with lots of harmonics. I run a boost pedal into the di and crank the thing with my electric guitar and get some awesome fuzzy di tones. It’s pretty amazing. On acoustic guitars it adds a presence that I normally don’t get with other pres. As a matter of fact, overall I’d say that it definitely has more presence than other pres I’ve tried. I am curious to see how a bunch of tracks would stack in a production, but I haven’t gotten there yet. Interested in other people’s thoughts as well! Attached is a little snippet of the di guitars. No processing! www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/kfjcbbs4pnm7aolixf03y/Most-Excellent.wav?rlkey=74q419dzbek30ao0ggcysn5wu&dl=0

I just got an Audioscape v3a, and it’s pretty fantastic. No idea how it actually compares to the original, but it’s a fantastic compressor!

If you like them, and they work for you, I wouldn’t change. Maybe keep them and get another pair of something just to see how they compare. But if it ain’t broke….
