Excited and nervous as I have just ordered a late 60’s early 70’s U87. It comes from a reputable seller who claims it’s as good as any example he’s ever heard, and the price was reasonable next to some other examples I’ve seen. It’s a very big purchase for me, and one not made without lots of thought. I’ve been trying to find a proper clone for a long time, but that small difference that the real thing adds, was just something I decided I wanted, and was worth the extra cost. Anyway, I can’t wait to get it and start recording!

I felt the same way about OW. I’ve had it for years and never quite liked the results in a mix. This week however, I was working on a very pop/rnb type vocal, and it just sounded too close to the front of the mic if that makes sense. Just a touch of OW in reverb mode and it helped to sit the vocal back into the mix where I needed it. Glad I finally got to use it, as it’s definitely one of the more expensive plugins I’ve purchased. Now that I’ve figured out a good way to use it, I don’t think I have any reverbs that could get me there as easily as this did.

+1 on the Akg. Sounds very “real” to me. Finally picked up the Massive Passive, and I just love that plug. The distressor is also incredible. Only running a quad, but sometimes I wish I had more!

Man that’s beautiful! Do you still have preamps Dan, or did they all sell?

I’ve had an 8803 eq for about a year. It’s super flexible. You can set it up for wide moves or tight corrective style moves. They pack a lot into a 1u unit. The variable hi and low pass come in handy. It’s obviously not as vibey as a 1073, but it definitely adds a little something to the signal with it’s circuitry.

Hi Guys, really proud of the way the CM49 stands up. With Vincent's amazing vocals it sound like a Class Act. Just turned 70 last week and it was a great birthday present to get this file from Vincent. I have a new CM49LE on the drawing board and we are just pricing it out. We have found a larger body the same size as the M49 and we can fit a larger frame BV11 transformer with the exact same windings and inductance as the original in the M49. We believe this will give us a little more "warmth" in the low midrange. We will use the same circuit as our CM48T with the GE/JAN 5654w configured as a triode with cathode bias like the M49C. However, the circuit will have the remote 9 pattern switching option. I just ordered a large frame BV11 transformer that we can try with the circuit. So, its still just on the drawing board at the moment but we have two major studios that are very interested in the build. Thanks for all your support which gives me the inspiration to carry on. Cheers, Dave I’m very interested in this!

I made some really great recordings with my old silver face Apollo, but man, I hated the DA. I think Focusrite has a good ear for conversion. I use an a Scarlett where I teach, and I have no complaints with the quality of sound.

Love my 930’s on piano as well. I’ve used the Oktavas as well, and I do like what they do with acoustic guitars. Never had the opportunity to try the 84’s but I’m sure I would dig them. The 930’s are also fantastic at live ensemble recording. I do find their cardioid pattern a bit tighter than the Oktavas.

Yes. My appreciation and application of ribbons is growing. I might just need this one.

Well I went ahead and bought a x16. It should be arriving next week. I look forward to seeing what it can do. Congrats! What do you currently use? I’m on a 16mkii and I’d lovevto know how the two compare sonically.

I read somewhere once, and it may just be hearsay, but apparently Al Schmitt uses 103s as oh’s

FWIW, I compared the TLM67 to my 3U GZ67Fet ($599) pretty extensively and it was at least a tie. I might have even liked the GZ67Fet a little better. Posted blind files here and on GS and it was around 50/50. I do like the TLM67, and indeed I rock one with the MaxMod guts inside as my main LDC, but I kinda feel like I'd have a hard time spending the coin for one given those GZ67Fet comparisons. I don't know. Just throwing that out there. I’ll look into that one. Thanks Ragan

Great stuff guys....I don’t think I’ve ever seen a thread dedicated to the tlm mics as a line as opposed to individual mic discussions. It’s cool to have it here as a resource!

I think with any system, it’s just a matter of getting used to it. Nothing out there can represent every other system perfectly. Find the one you like working with, and get good at it. For some people it’s an Apollo, for some a Motu. I’ve been to some pretty incredible studios that are still using pre symphony Apogees and blue digi boxes. It all works if you know how to work with it.

I’ve always dug this performance, and the vocals sound pristine through that 170.

I actually dig the TLM67. It sounds excellent on an acoustic guitar. I know the U67 gets lots of praise, but the acoustic always sounds a touch cloudy and muddled through the U67 tube mic, but I prefer the TLM67 FET on acoustic. Plus you can get a MaxMod MK67 for it and double dip. Yeah the option to do the Max Mod thing is another reason the 67 is appealing, although I still think it sounds pretty great stock.

Nice....I agree, but I’m just talking about the TLMs here. So the 107 is your favorite? The 170 is, I've never come across the 107 (bar clips on the interwibble).. Yes sorry, I meant the 170.

Depends on what I'm using it on, I've mentioned this many times but for me the U89i / TLM-170's are the best all rounders as they never sound bad on anything. In second / third place is the U67 / KM56's and I do like the "vintage U87".. I've had a LOT of Neumann's or at least come across them on my path, the only two that remains are the U89I and KM56's.. The rest I've been able to fill their shoes with far cheaper and sometimes sonically preferable options.. Nice....I agree, but I’m just talking about the TLMs here. So the 107 is your favorite?

So I’m sorta feeling out what my next mic will be and for some reason the TLM’s keep popping up on my radar. I know people have sort of a love hate relationship, but every time I hear one, or use one, I always end up digging it. The 103 does a really solid modern thing, the 170 is fantastic for a big natural slightly enhanced kinda thing. I’ve heard pretty sweet vox done with the 49, and I’m on the fence about pulling the trigger on a 67. The 102 is cool but doesn’t do anything for me, and I’ve always felt as though the 193 is a little boring compared to the 170. So what are your thoughts? Who’s used what and where does it stand now in your collection?
