Concept is great, looks cool too! On my radar now, for eventual home use. Nice price at around $1000. My understanding is that it's a logical progression of the 'ol BK-5.
Thoughts/Comments?...

Yes. My appreciation and application of ribbons is growing. I might just need this one.

After reading about it, it seems like another modern style (you know with the extra top end range) ribbon mic. Does it have any mojo of the older era Ribbons I am not convinced just yet. Will it be handy and useful? Absolutely. Will have to wait until real life reviews come out. But other then the supercardioid pattern there are mics like Stager, Royer, extinct Audio etc that do the modern sound for cheaper and still maintain a nice low end. The frequency plot looks interesting with a little mid range push just after 1-2khz.

I wonder if AEA will put out a version without the active electronics. I love unidirectional ribbons but I also like not having to use phantom power or being able to crank a nice tube pre.

The Samples sound way better than a BK-5.... Gonna get a couple! Which samples did you hear? I saw/heard the Vintage King comparisons and the original BK5 to me had way better fidelity.like much more extension high and low. the KU5A one sounded darker rolled off over 8k and under 100hz. that said we did get to use some[alongside the KU4's,Nuvos, N22's etc] on the Kamasi Washington band live to film thing in November and they certainly didn't suck.

Yeah I don't think those samples make the aea look particularly appealing. I preferred the original in every comparison. It seems to lack that brightness that makes the original so cool.

I am considering this KU5A mic. I heard the band Scary Pockets do a series of videos with it on multiple vocalists and snare drums, and to my ears it performed really well, with a full band all performing in the same room. I also heard a video posted by a beta tester where he used it for a violin soloist in an outdoor venue and that sounded great.
In the Vintage King video the AEA guy admits they sound different from the BK5 and he wanted to show that. But I thought the results were great. I guess the idea that I could use this live or in the studio is appealing.

I agree it doesn't sound like the same microphone. If you want a BK5 you're going to have to track one down.

The other BK-5 ‘remake’, the Silvia Classics/Telefunken SC-5C/RM-5C was considered a failure by people making comparisons. I never heard one, just the BK-5A tracks I captured with a loaner mic. Haven’t heard this new one either.

The AEA in these comparisons sounds a bit like my Xaudia modded Beyer M260 when I compared it to a BK5. I don't own a BK5 anymore but had one for a couple years and it had a bite that was really nice on amps, someone offered to buy it from me at a really good price so I sold since I wasn't using it much.
Anyway I tend to favor fig8 ribbons these days, I track a lot of live bands and always thought that hypercadioid would give me better isolation but in practice, I get better results with figure 8s. I just used my AEA R44 on a Orange amp that was 5 feet away from a LOUD drummer and with the right positioning, you'd think the amp is in a iso booth...
As for the BK5, I always found the Beyer M160 to be in the same family of sound, a least on amps and acoustics. The only downside is they can't take the SPL like the BK5s.

I’m curious about follow up activity with this mic.
AEA have application videos on their site that are compelling.

Here ya go...they use it on 90% of the singers on their channel. It’s great. I want one.

I had one for a couple weeks and it made me regret selling the BK5 I had at one point. I really really wanted to like the mic. It was just really dull.
Some of the samples I hear make me want to try another one to see if mine was just a dud.

It seems to be somewhat singer dependent. Wes Dooley himself, picked his N22 on my voice over it. In the around $1K or less category. Otherwise his 44 Ribbon, for the win! Chris
