How does this front panel design look? Any suggestions for tweaks?

Looks great to me, better without blinky lights!

The ribbon switch deactivates phantom and bypasses the input transformer secondary resistor, per 1930s RCA console specs for ribbon mics.

From the website: “Built in as standard is our unique Ribbon Mic Mode, which bypasses the input decoupling capacitorss, raises the input impedance from 8.1kΩ to 20kΩ, and defeats the 48V phantom power, preventing damage to delicate ribbon mic elements.”
We have an 8-channel Grace at the studio. The ribbon function does sound good on ribbons and dynamic mics too.

But you'd need four and that'd increase the price considerably. Plus, is there room for 4 VU meters on that fascia?

No room for VU meters. Nor do I want to muddy up the signal path or use a buffering amp. Just clean tube preamplification.

Looks great Dan. Is this a 4ch version of my 2ch unit? I’d be interested but I already have a 4ch Fearn to compliment my 2ch DBPre.

Yes, Keith. But this is just a faceplate mockup. It will be some time before this is ready.
This version also does not have the shelving filters. Have you found them to be useful?

I have, especially on long ribbons ala 44bx or Melodium 42b. The proximity effect starts a couple feet out and your two chosen HPF settings tame them well. It would be a good nice-to-have in this unit but would it greatly increase cost and will another switch fit? All in all, I wouldn’t count the filters as essential because I can HPF later. The only time you might really miss them is if you’re following the pre with a compressor and the exaggerated bass response is pushing the comp too much.

is it possible to get more gain ?

It is a 3u 19” standard rack. Don’t know the depth yet, but probably 11”.
More gain would come at the expense of a higher ratio input transformer, which I wouldn’t want to give up the Jensens. Or changing the output transformer, which I also don’t want to do. Or adding another tube gain stage, which is not my goal either.

Looks fantastic. I always like MUTE buttons on pres for same room recording, but only my Phoenix have them. It's so helpful to mute the pre for monitor speaker playback. ...Lorne

is it possible to get more gain ? Maybe a cloudlifter or FetHead for low output mics? Might be a solution...

An extra 7db of gain for ribbon mics?
If you are going mic-> mic pre -> recorder, some ribbons will struggle on softer sources with 63dB of gain....
$.02
